I'm a ways away from it but what is needed to retro fit a 76 stock exhaust to an earlier style (2.0)?

not sure what you need to also have heat ??

You also need the early heat exchanger 'elbows'. Sometimes they are packaged with a set of used exchangers, some times not.
Also, somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall needing the early warm air guides that are compatible with a side-shift transmission.

Yes, also need the J-tubes, S-tubes(warm air guides), and warm air guide covers(sheet metal). You can reuse the flapper boxes but thats about it.
