Sounds like a solid plan with what appears to be a solid platform. I would lean towards the Subaru conversion if you seriously have to have either the V-8 or the Subie.

It will be fun to follow your progress. I've got a 72 sitting in my back yard, waiting for me to get back to it and restore it. In the meantime I drive my 73 every day
