I was alongside a Mini Cooper at a light yesterday and could not help but notice that it's outer mirrors mount at a very similar position relative to the door and that the door "seemed" to have the same approximate curve. The car had some factory sticker expousing Greenism so it is likely a more recent Mini, if it matters. Any thoughts or similar observations? BTW, those mirrors look NICE.

Hey thx John. If you could just give it a once over and your opinion as to whether it might be a fit w/ some or none modifications. I'll check back here later. thx again, kent

I've had the same thoughts when looking at MINI mirrors. I've also heard reports that Miata mirrors can work well. Having attempted to put 911 "Flag" mirrors on a 914 I can tell you it's tricky (well at least for me) and getting "how I did it" info from veterans is a problem. I'll be very interested to see what this thread develops.

Why ?

Why ?

Why do it? Because it's something new and more choices are better than less. Or do you mean why is getting information difficult?
johannes
Why not keeping it as it came from the factory ?
nsr-jamie
Its his car, let them do as they like...perhaps he will add the mirrors from the mini along with a chalon body kit. Most people would not do this but its his choice....personally I think the stock mirrors work nice and look cool on the cars but thats my thought, call me old fashioned but thats just me.

Why ?

#1-The ones that came on my 914 (both 914's) are baby Turbos (non stock), faded and floppy. A make-up mirror glued to a popsicle stick would be an improvement. Factory originals are higher than a cats ass in a dog fight and are usually of poor quality by now or are in Pat Garvey's closet, somewhere. That being said I am looking for a suitable replacement, preferably aerodynamic in form and remote controlled would be a plus if available.
#2- It's my soap and my peter so I'll wash it just as fast as I want to. shades.gif

No Pics, but I just compared our 06 "S" mirrors to the 914 door. The top door radius of the 914 is much sharper/smaller and the Mini mirror has a much taller neck which makes it mount in a slightly lower position on the door.

I'm not seeing the 06 version as a bolt on. sawzall-smiley.gif

Not that expensive for used one on ebay USA.

As the mirror shells are made of stainless steel and not covered with chrome, you can easely re-polish them.

And you can find new one on ebay Germany...

A lot of things have improved, and improved hugely, over the last forty years. So if there are tasteful ways to make the car faster, safer and more comfortable why not? Resale value?
obscurity
The Mini mirrors would probably be safer than the original mirrors (since they are larger). However the mirrors on my 07 Mini seem like they would look too large on a 914. They are pretty bulky compared to the 914 mirrors

My 2 cents,
John

Those of us that have - or - had mini's (both new & old) are very comfortable with our masculinity. shades.gif I've heard the same comments about audi TT's, the new (old) beatle and miata's. Need a session with Dr. Freud to examine those feelings of inadequacy? happy11.gif

I would love to find one with a small base, sleek and possibly powered.

Again, that's valuable info that helps. TY

EDIT: OK, I looked at the pic's of the originals (they are sweet) but I may have an issue with the foot print of the base. Do you know that diminsion Johannes?

Over the years, I've seen various mirrors go in and out of style (Vitaloni Tornados, Baby Tornados, 911 flag mirrors, etc), and the ones that always look good to me are the original ones.

As previously mentioned, they are available and quite reasonable.

Has anyone used the convex mirror for the passenger side? I seem to remember that somone on the net was going to make these available. I haven't checked with the Porsche dealer, but unless you have a part number for them, they are usually not much help (most parts counter guys these days weren't even born when these cars were made).

He wants Mini mirrors on his car so drop all the lambasting about not using the factory mirrors. It's HIS car not yours, so let it be. Sometimes this place is like a damned community association.

As for the mirrors not fitting, most mirrors now are made from a composite plastic that can easily be filed or sanded to the proper contour. Make a cardboard template of the door curve and file the Mini unit to fit.

To make it easier to fit some types you may look at the SPa bases that Pegasus sells. Allowed me to get rid of the giant bases on my baby flags.

These look interesting. I hadn't heard of Pegasus before, but seems like I've seen these on a 914 and they looked good.

My issue with the factory mirrors (and the Vitaloni units that came on my car) is that they get knocked out of adjustment so easily. I like the idea of modern mirrors that have the foldable head which snaps back in place without losing the mirror adjustment. The visibility of non-stock mirrors is also preferable to me. The mirror size and "set screw" approach of the Pegasus mirrors sounds like a good approach.
Mike Bellis
Go for it but the base may need some massaging...

I do absolutely agree with Scotty that it is his car and he can mount whichever mirrors he likes. Sorry if I offended anyone with my comments.

I have had several friends in the past that had changes their mirrirs, then wanted to go back to the originals, so that was the basis of my comment. Kind of like what happened with all the slant-nosed monochromatic 911 turbos from the Miami Vice days.
Bartlett 914
Although I like to look of the stock mirror, I would like a mirror with a remote adjustment. The passenger side is very sensitive in adjustment and I cannot adjust it while driving. It makes the passenger side useless to me. The Mini don't do it for me. Still looking for the correct look.

Yeah, me too, and I still haven't found any I really like. But they're just mirrors so change them over, change them back, no big deal.

On the OTHER hand if someone comes up with an outstanding modern option I'm first in line. Mini mirrors don't appear to be it (Escort either BTW) but there are others out there and who knows?

I believe you have used up your quota of big words for the month.
Thankfully you posted in July so you have a firm reset of your quota for big words.
Use them wisely for many times it may go over the heads of many.

"Lambasting", someone cookinga lamb? I thought we was talking bout meers. I know there are several companys that make units for hot rods. IMO - most swaps from newer cars (miata, mini, etc) are just too damn big. They just look wrong. I will see if I can dig up a ink or name or something. My buddy put a set on his ranchero that looked really sweet and I actually had him get me a set years back, but I sold them to another guy for his car, I think. They were really cool looking. Kinda like a shrunk down version of a ferrari mirror. I will see what I can dig up...
Twise
Just google "hot rod mirrors". A ton of crap came up.

Here is the style I was talking about. The stalks and bases are solid plastic, so the can be hand formed to mount on any profile you want. I have held one up to my car and it looked pretty good. The size was perfect.

Your local - you get them and I may be persuaded to paint them for some beers.

a basted lamb.
Twise
Wow - No shit - That sucker is basted for sure.
DBCooper
No, no, not "basted", as in something that's cooked, it's "bastid", pronounced as BASS-tid, which is Bostonese for a child of unknown father. And also me, at least according to my ex-wife.

You read my mind Scotty. Sandpaper, glue and a few different sizes of PVC pipe.

That Pegasus looks like it has a flat base. I suppose it could be hammered out and filed smooth. sad.gif

Which one of those were you refering to Trevor. 4 of those are pricey and sexy. I love the turn sig lite. Might have to make a few junk yard runs just to get an idea of what I need. These are my wants & guidelines: #1 - Visabilty, #2 - appearance, #3 - cost, #4 - remote function. I'll post up whatever CSOB replacement I come up with but it may be a 2 more months.
