If it's THE car that you've been waiting for then BUY IT! If it's an investment then that 's another story. Be happy smile.gif

According to Bruce Andersons "Market Update" in the August 2004 issue of Excellence, the value is as follows:

1987 coupe
Poor condition - $15,374.
Good condition - $17,480.
Excellent condition - $23,400.

Looks like the car you looking at is a pretty good deal.

That's about average....they have valve guide issues....if you have concerns have a PPI done and do a leak down and/or compression check. The earlier models have the 915 trans...this should have the G-50 right?

Not pink right...it's a manly color? rocking nana.gif

JT,
If the car is as clean and as straight as you say, that's a good price. The 87 - 98 Carreras are the best of the SC/Carrera series, the longest lived, and the most reliable. The price seems like it's in the ballpark. A recent issue of Excellent had a review of 911 prices in this period.

As far as selling the 914, that's something to reconsider.

It can't hurt to try to get a concession but, if you think the price is fair, pressing for a big price cut will probably lead to hard feelings.

I check comparable prices. If it's in the right range, then a good rule of thumb is to figure 10% is negotiable.

JT Buy It, you won't regret it. I have had an 83 SC CAB Platnuim metallic, dark brown leather, great car. Only paid $6500. recently sold for $17000. I also had an 84 Carrera Coupe triple black, wonderful car. Bought for $7500 and sold for $16500.
I am going down to Los Angeles July 18th to pick up a 1988 Carrera Coupe triple black, sport seats, sport suspension, 7x8 Fuchs, essentially a one owner car. $13500.
If you read the Market Report by Bruce Anderson you will find out that the 86-88 Carreras are the ones that are highly preferred over any of the others in the range of 1983 to 1988.
Good luck and let us know what happens.

DO NOT BUY the car with out getting a PPI done by a good Porsche shop
in the area. DO NOT trust Car fax. You want to make sure this car is gone over
and you know what is wrong with it before you buy it. You want to make sure it
has never been wacked. This will also give you room to negotiate. Give her a deposit tell her you want it checked out and if anything major is wrong the deal is off and you want your money back. If lots of little stuff is wrong tell her you would like to negotiate from there. I would give her a $500 deposit. If she refuses to have the car checked out by a mechanic of your choice this should be a big red flag. Do not get caught up in an impulse buy that is a bad place to be. These cars can cost big $$$ to fix. Lots of guys on pelican have fallen into this trap car looks great they jump on it and are sorry once the smoke clears. Do not worry about insulting her this is business its your hard earned
money on the line here.

Good Luck

With this mileage, be very carefull what you buy!
Like Zois already mentioned, 3.2s have issues with the valve guides
The alloy used for the guides is too soft and they typically wear out around 100 / 110K miles (so this one is close)
When they do (NOT if they do), you're in for a head rebuild... not cheap...

Keep it in mind, might be a good way to get the price down

Other than that, they are very nice cars. I had my '87 for almost 8 years.

cheers,

Jeroen

PPI definetely without question. I had one done on the car in LA and I was able to talk with the shop that has serviced the car from new.
Very good points made by others.

Succinct advice here (not to mention one darn fine avatar). I wouldn't, however, give her a deposit--not necessary. There are lots of these out there, AND you seem to have buyers fever. I don't mean this rudely. Kick back a little and be more objective. I ended up with a great SC, but it was the third one I looked at. An engine rebuild is $8000 dollars or more. Has it ever been wrecked? High mileage is okay as long as there are no significant problems.

Get it checked out by a reputable Porsche specialist (this advice was worth repeating).

good advice all.
the car goes to the Wizard on tuesday to be looked over.
i have looked at probably 50-55 cars in the last 2 years cause i knew we were going to have to replace the sc we have now.
this car is the only car i have considered except the teener i now drive. 76 914 2.0 straight original every piece and part in place.i bought it for $3000.
thanks for the $# it gives me a starting point
