Now I have a new respect for the CITROËN DS wacko.gif

When a Smart car makes an Automotive List, you know the Author is an Idiot.

And a Fiat?, a Citroen?

Ahead of its time, really. Compared to the ill handling boats that American manufacturers were putting out in 1955, the DS was a jewel.

Now, Smart cars... OK, those don't belong.

Wow, thats horrible!! No mentions of cars like the Toyota 2000GT, Ferrari Dino 246GT and so many more......no offense, but a Citroen...interesting suspension but... icon8.gif and even worse a Smart car....

A citroen cabriolet (one of three) just sold at Bohneims for 300k.

It really was a design statement back in the day

If I remember correctly, it had the accessories bolted to the body rather than to the engine. Can't say that I had ever seen that before, or since.

seems the author had something for small cars.....

All of those are nice cars but, no offense, none of them was revolutionary in any way.

I had few Citroens, including some with the hydraulic suspension. You may make fun of them but that suspension is amazing in every aspect.
carr914
I was just trying to suggest a few cars vs the article

Maybe not Revolutionary, but think

60's Elan, Super Lightweight, Fast, available as a Produced Car or Kit

Insight - Mass Produced Hybrid way before the Prius

53 Corvette, Start of the Fiberglass & Muscle car revolution

Early MGs - Affordable SportsCars for GIs returning from WWII

Eldorado - FWD

Tesla - Performance All Electric Car

914, Mass Produced Mid-Engine car for the Masses, Tons of Interior Room, 2 good sized Trunks

I think he's named the wrong Citroen. Not that I have anything against the DS, which was a great car, but the Traction Avant, which debuted in the 1930s, had front wheel drive, independent suspension (by torsion bars), hydraulic brakes, monocoque construction (unibody) and was the first car to be sold equipped with radial tires as standard.
Contrast that to the Ford, which arrived 15 years later.

How he didn't mention the sexy Triumph Spitfire mk3 or Datsun 240Z is also beyond me.

Actually a few of these are revolutionary.
The Insight was one of the first mass produce "hybrid" cars.
Tesla is the first electric super car.
The 914, well, come on. If Porsche would have gone with the mid engine back then think how much further they would have been with cars like the Boxster and Caymen.

You guys are so funny!! You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
You think all that hybrid and electric car stuff is new ?!

Here is a quote from a site that documents the history of the hybrid cars.
http://www.hybridcars.com/history/history-...d-vehicles.html

1898
The Austrian Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, at age 23, built his first car, the Lohner Electric Chaise. It was the world's first front-wheel-drive. Porsche's second car was a hybrid, using an internal combustion engine to spin a generator that provided power to electric motors located in the wheel hubs. On battery alone, the car could travel nearly 40 miles.

Who are Honda and Toyota?
carr914
The Point of my Post was to get what you guys thought were Great Car Designs

and you want to argue.

Most of us know that the Electric (or Hybrid) cars have been around for a long time, but not Mass Produced.

Honda & Toyota? just 2 little Japanese companies that have kicking US Manufacturors Ass's for a while, that make affordable efficient cars that last forever
dion9146

Blasphemy that the Pinto was not mentioned. It was the first exploding car to market that I am aware of. It was my college car of necessity. My college car of choice, a '76 BMW 320i, never ran for more than 3 consecutive days.
