Full Version: Collapsable Push Rod Tubes

I took my '76 2.0 to a different mechanic than the one I used before to have the pushrod tube seals replaced. He is telling me that he will need to put in collapsable tubes to replace the seal. Anyone ever heard of this or used them. If so, any problems? confused24.gif

those are for 911 engines...I thought I read that some are sold for VW bug applications as well....you might want to find another mechanic smile.gif

Yea, I had them in my VW Bug. They leaked like a siv. I lost about 1/2 quart of oil a day. My driveway became an oil slick that the neighborhood kids would slide down on.

My opinion........ DONT USE THEM! headbang.gif

The Type IV is unique in the VW line in allowing you to remove and replace the pushrod tubes with the heads on the engine. The Type 1,2,3s require you to remove the heads to change them, so the collapsable tubes are used on those to allow you to change them w/o doing that. The 911 has a set of similar looking tubes that only function as oil returns (no pushrods). They also have collapsable versions for the same reason.

I'd say your mechanic isn't familiar with the Type IV, which means I agree with Mike. Find a mechanic who IS familiar with it, or you'll be paying this guy to learn how to fix your engine.

Also the collapsable (sp?) tubes are about 3x the cost of regular ones. FYI, my pushrod tubes were 4.95ea and the seals .32 each. They should, errr, better be here next week.

Thanks guys. I drove over to the shop as soon as the replies started coming in and told him to stop. He said he realized right after I left this morning that I was correct. I told him to find the leaks and I would fix them myself.

i wouldn't be too hard on the mechanic if he came to realize he was wrong, unless he works on 914's all the time, it's easy to forget these little things.....

it's not too bad of a job to do yourself if you have the time, space and tools.......
