I can never make it to the 914 breakfasts and such, because they're always far away and on days I have prior commitments. I figure the only way I'll make it to one is if I plan it. (I realize this could result in me eating alone, but that's OK)
Here's my idea:
Breakfast at 10AM Sunday August 1st, at Margies Diner in San Luis Obispo, CA.
Everyone who plans on coming say so here so we can get some peer pressure going
Since this area isn't as 914 dense as say, the bay area, I'll need help spreading the word.. Mention it to everyone you know that lives in this area or might be passing through. If it goes well, I'll try to do this every once in a while. If anyone has any suggestions or complaints, say so.. I'm bringing this up early so there will be some time for discussion, as I have never done this before.

...If anyone has any suggestions or complaints, say so..
traditionally, breakfasts are scheduled to begin at 9:14 am...
August 1 is only 2 weeks away - that's not quite 'bringing it up early' so people can plan... i pretty much know what i'll be doing every weekend between now and November... 4 weeks is a good planning window, 6 is better.
but you've done a good thing, and you'll learn things from this event that will make your next event even better.
i have only one real phrase of guidance for you: "separate checks."
don't plan for a place that won't go for it ...

Cool, thanks for the advise. The reason I chose 10AM is I'm afraid it will be too crowded at 9:14.. plus I'll be out late the night before seeing ZZ top (yay!) and I won't be wanting to get up super early. I realize that 2 weeks isn't alot, but it seems like more warning than I usually get. The most successful ones seem to be the ones that happen monthly, the same saturday of every month or whatnot. Unfortunately my weekends are too busy for me to do that. I'm sure margies will do separate checks, they're a friendly bunch.. but we may not want to.. their breakfasts are big enough that 6-10 people could probably share one

Post to the birdshit board as well. I bought bagels, cream cheese, coffee, bottled water, orange juice and I served up the last of my smoked steelhead. That and a shop tour will bring you a crowd. Maybe you can hire a stripper!

Why don't you guys make it simple...
Do it every month on the first or the last saturday of the month
That way, you always know WHEN it is
Details on where exactly can be posted last minute
Basically, that's how we do our BS meetings here

Think it's a great idea. SoCal has the roads and weather, but we rarely meet. But SLO would be a hard sell due to distance. I'm in Westlake, 2.5 hours from there, LA and OC much worse.
Don't think we would get too many folks to drive that far for breakfast. Dancing girls and track events would do it. Jeroen, CA is 1000 miles north to south. Would you go to Paris for breakfast?
Never mind, you probably would

OK bondo. Count me in. I get off work at 9am (so I can never get to the 9:14 breakfasts), I'll try to get from the Castle to Margie's in an hour. If you ever want a shop to hold an event in, lemme know & I'll try & talk the Cap'n into it.

Not every 914 event needs to be a big production. You guys are way too high maintenance.
Give him a break. He wants to get some people together and have fun in his home town. If people think it is too far to drive... don't come.

I would suggest The Madonna Inn, in one of the mirrored ceiling rooms, with all the girls - And keep Howard out - He is SoCal's MikeZ, with less class.

Whenever I read something about No. Cal, I get excited that there might be something near me, but then I read it's like the bay area or Modesto or .....
Maybe someday there will be something happening here in the 'Real' Northern CA. At least closer than over 200 miles away...
Yes, there is life north of the S.F. bay area...

Why Bakersfield? The Crystal Palace, Mesa Marin raceway, Trouts, The Kern River Belle, The Long Branch Saloon, the Tejon Club, and speedway racing. "Nuff for you, Mikey? Drinkin' and REAL Racin', all in one town ............
Make that breakfast lunch instead and the Cap'n and the lovely Lyn will probably be there!

So bondo, what are we gonna do, have it in SLO or over in Bakersfield? If it moves to the valley, I'll have to pass. I don't think I can work a graveyard shift & drive that far. You're the organizer here, tell me what's what. BTW, If you hold it in SLO, the Cap'n has his shop about a half an hour away in Santa Maria, & I bet if we all beg real nice, he'll open it up for us.
Allan
Jul 19 2004, 04:25 PM
I would rather go to SLO. It's too freakin hot here to be driving around during the day in a car without A/C. Plus I don't know how these cars would handle the grapevine for any body coming from down south in 100 degree temps.
bondo
Jul 19 2004, 04:41 PM
Heh, SLO. Bakersfield is too far, I wouldn't be able to make it myself... That would defeat my whole purpose

There was some mentioning of making it lunch so people from farther away can make it. Would an 11:30 lunch be ok? I think they serve breakfast until 1, so you could still get breakfast if you had your heart set on it.

Jul 19 2004, 04:45 PM
As far as the shop goes, were you thinking of using the shop to work on 914s, or just having it as a more greasy environment for chatting, or what? I was really just thinking of a breakfast for this first one, and then maybe eventually work up to a breakfast with a drive or something. (I'm new at this)
Do you think the Cap'n would be up for hosting a 914 swap meet?
Cap'n Krusty
Jul 19 2004, 05:46 PM
I, too, would like to do a breakfast as an opening effort. The shop can be available in the future, but it's fulla MBZs right now and it doesn't look like they're goin' away anytime soon ................... 11:30 is doable for us, though I might be a little late. Pick a date! You said Margies, right? Their lunch food is good, too. There's always other places if you don't like more food on your plate than 2 people can eat! The Cap'n

11:30 works for me, and I'm passing on the Carlsen swap meet that day. The folks running it have SERIOUSLY dropped the ball. Last year there were about 10 sellers, down from 100-150 in years past, and they didn't reply to my inquiry. Used to be the best swap meet of the year anywhere in CA. The Cap'n

Overnite HELP!Is there anyone in the SLO area that could call some 'relatively' inexpensive motels for me, for a Saturday July 31st stayover?
I went online and tried Motel 6, Holiday Inn & Best Western... No Vacancy.
I'd take a place in Pismo (gee U think?) as I'd like to spend part of saturDay there.
I know this is last minute, but after looking earlier in the week, I planned on Not attending, but if I could just find somewhere 'relatively' inexpensive to stay......
Thanks in advance.

Ooh, saturday night accomodations in the summer are TOUGH around here. AND, this is the first weekend of the mid-state fair. You may end up having to go all the way to Santa Maria. And forget campgrounds, they book up before the hotels. I'll make some calls, but don't count on me finding anything. What's your price limit? (motel 6 around here is cheap enough, holiday inn around here is actually kinda pricy)
Oh, and it is the Margies on Calle Juaquin.. right next to a motel 6... that's booked up.
bondo
Jul 30 2004, 10:05 AM
Motel 6 is booked up everywhere... travelocity shows some availability in the area though.. looks like you can find something for around $130-$150 (ouch). Click to select a hotel and it will tell you if it's available and at what price. Pismo beach, shell beach, avila beach, grover beach, arroyo grande, los osos and morro bay are all within a reasonable distance to SLO. Because of the mid-state fair you probably want to stay away from north county. Good Luck!
bondo
Jul 30 2004, 11:32 AM
Oh, and my 73 1.7 is still for sale. I'll have it at the brunch, so if anyone is interested, come check it out! I've lowered the price to $1000.
