It was my understanding that the only "original" engines available in 1973 were the 1.7 and the 2.0.

However, I constantly see on eBay, Craigslist and on the N.A.D.A. site,...1973's listed as having the 1.8L eninge,...supposedly stock.

Was the 1.8L available in 1973?

70-72 1.7 & 6 2.0
73 1.7 & 2.0
74-76 1.8 & 2.0 - but IIRC 2.0 only for 76

You've got it right & the evil-bay sellers are wrong.
That usually tells me that they know squat about 914s! dry.gif

yepp - the 1.8 was available from MY 1974 on

MY 1974 started in August 1973

so, the 1.8 was available from August 1973 on

I think the important part here is that no 914 with a 73 VIN came with a 1.8L from the factory.

MY 73 did not offer a 1.8L engine ...

Gustl, isn't that technically a 74 and not a 73?

Edit: ya beat me to it Andy!!!!!!!!!!
Gustl
Curt & Andy, you're both correct

but the original question was about the year, not the modelyear

I think that might be the point ...

I don't think so as he also said this:

"I constantly see on eBay, Craigslist and on the N.A.D.A. site,...1973's listed as having the 1.8L eninge,...supposedly stock."

Asking specifically about '73 cars listed as having a stock 1.8L engine.

People usually refer to the year of their cars using the modelyear as indicated by the VIN number.

Thanks Guys,

I am considering selling my 1973, (see other recent post), and I have had several people asking me if it had the 1.8 or the 2.0. My immediate answer is, it has the 1.7 as the 1.8 was not available on the 1973 models. I am getting tons of people wanting to argue that I am wrong and that it should have a 1.8.

They are referencing eBay ads, Craigslist listings and even the N.A.D.A. website which lists it as a 1.8L.

Thanks for helping me clear it up,
Danny

Now you can send them a link to this thread. cool_shades.gif

And you can point out that the 1.7 was (ever so slightly) more powerful than the 1.8 as well. biggrin.gif
