Not what fits on the car...but what is the fattest and safely applicable size rubber for an 8 inch wheel or a 9 inch wheel?

Best answer is to go look at the tire manufacturers' spec sheets for each tire, type.gif
which will give the rim width range allowable for each tire, cuz it can vary by tire type, ratings, construction & mfgr., etc. shades.gif

Cantilevered tires will fit on narrower rims. I have 9in rims and run 245's on them I'm running 225 on 8in.

Hey Rich,

I'm running 255/50/16's on 9's and 225/50/16's on 8's. I would run 265's if I could find a staggered set in the same brand tire.

You know, Rick, the alien and Chappy's monster sure make me proud to drive a Minnesota 914!

What rim size? Makes a difference.

Tire Rack's site shows wheel sizes that are viable for each specific tire.

I didn't see the tire rack chart but the tires pictured in the photo I posted are Yokohama's I couldn't get the rears when I needed to replace them. I ended up changing all 4 with Dunlaps. The Dunlap's are the same size but look smaller on the car.

Rick,

Here is an example for the Hoosier R6 which is what I run. The "Specs" tab is where the sizing info is displayed. I am not sure if Tire Rack publishes this kind of info for every tire, however.

What it says in this case for a 245/45-16 is rim width of 7.5-9"

Both tires also have a 225/50R16 available that will fit 6"-8" rims for the front of the car

I have 285/50-18 Conti Cross-Contact on 9's on the Titan.
They seem to be NLA so I'm not sure what they'll get replaced with.
As with 15's on sports cars, it's getting hard to find performance tires in 18.
I may have to go to 20's just to find tires...

Careful....A different series tire makes a difference on the wheel size. There is even a difference among tire manufacturers. This topic was just covered on THIS THREAD
