Pretty simple question really. i am getting 18 volts at load and normal volts when idle. what is the part that needs to be replaced to fix this if it isn't the alternator would it just be the voltage regulator?

this part?
just want confirmation trying to possibly get it running before i move next friday but trying to do it on the cheap cause of our closing cost and such smile.gif

I have two spare voltage regulators. I'll send you one and if it cures the problem, you can have it.
Cheers, Elliot

Regulator is bad. You will distroy your battery if you run it too long like that.

You are in the heart of East Tennessee Teenerville. aktion035.gif

There is a local company that probably has a few teeners that may have the original boards still in their rusted hulks.

Would get you started anyways. Also, there's a local Type IV specialist in Knoxville (All VW actually).

Brain Fart keeps me from recommending who because I can't remember. Google "Porsche 914 parts, Maryville" or "..., Knoxville"

If I might add, Elliot and the others here, including me will dig deep or scavenge our own stock if you need a hand.

Later Tater.

tap the voltage regulator while running...tap it well enough to loosen the parts inside....see if the condition changes.

Sometimes the old ones get stuck...Ed from CFR showed me this...it really does work.

Otherwise, get a new one.
McMark knows where to get transistorized VR's for our cars that wont have that problem going forward.

Get it fixed, you will boild the battery with anything over 14.7 volts.

Yes you do. Friendly Local Auto Parts Store. I got one at auto zone for ~ 30 bucks. Some swear by the old time Bosch mechanical regulators, but the new electronic one seems to work just fine IMO.
