I have two other motors and this piece is different. I beleive that should be the oil pump, it looks like they just put a plate there. has anyone seen this before? should I get myself another oil pump? or is it just the cover?

The thing is that I have a leak there and I would like to take care of it as well.

vw type 1 oil pumps use a cover plate. search on this forum for melling or schadek and look at some of the pics.

it's one of these

a type 1 [bug motor] oil pump

Valy
It's a type 1 oil pump. The rust tells me it's steel so probably Melling.
The problem with the steel ones is that they expand less than the aluminum body so when the engine is hot, there is a gap between the engine and pump and the seals are forced.

...it's Melling, the other is stock idea.gif
