Full Version: who was talking about machining 2nd gear

I know it was in relation to a V8 thread a couple of weeks ago..
but I did some sleuthing this weekend and learned abit that was related to the previous thread...

I learned that there are a few Race cars in colorado running 901 boxes with the 2nd gear F shaft machined off....

There are some interesting track benefits in gearing, but I don't know if it would work on your V8 street car and here is why:

no reverse gear....

When you slide 2nd down into the 1st gear slot, you have to machine the case to give it space to fit... and it also interfere's with the reverse gear so you have to remove the reverse... may not be an ideal situation for a street car...

On the track, they are claiming that they save enough money on gears that they can afford to have the machining done.. but also that the work to the Shaft alone is 800 bucks, so that kinda rules out the CHEAP ness of a street idea.

I think I'm going to try one of these as a back up gear box, but I thought I would pass along the machining info...

That was me. I wasn't trying to remove the gear from the shaft exactly... more like remove the shaft from the gear smile.gif I want to use that gear set, but flip it for use as 5th gear, in 5th gear's spot. That project is sort of on hiatus as I try to save myself alot of time and trouble by trying to scare up an H gearset, that would pretty much do the same thing. I will come back to the machining plan if that doesn't pan out.

Oh.. 5th gear thats right...

I thought maybe you were trying to run 2nd F down to 1st... thats what they are doing on the race box, and then they can tighten up 2nd/3rd/4th/5th and build a super tight (904 almost) box....

Yeah, that's pretty much the opposite of what I'm trying to do.. the V8 I'm using has such a wide and flat torque curve that I could probably get by with three speeds smile.gif I'm trying to build a 901 into as wide of a 4 speed as possible.

OK, How much can you buy a used 901 2nd gear shaft for? Someone must have a pile of them. I'll Bet you could find a discount machine shop to cut the shaft and bore out the center of the 901 2nd gear to the proper size cheaper than $ 600.00 (H) gear!

There must be a pile of tail shift tranaxles just laying in wait. idea.gif

That's exactly what I was working on. but ths shaft is so hard that I can't machine it even with carbide... barely scratches it.. so it has to be annealed, machined, and rehardened after machining. Then there is the issue of the splines on the inside of the gear that would need to be cut into it. No easy way to do that.

Oh and can someone post a link here to our last disscion on this? I can't remember the topic title. Did we ever find out who either rebuilds tranaxles? (redbeard maybe? confused24.gif sorry can't remember)

And or did we ever find out If there is a text on the subject a guy could purchase on rebuilding a box?

Anyone ever have a gear made? Who in the states does this? Could we have a group buy on a copied gear?

K how much you wanna pay me laugh.gif

Guard transmission makes custom gears, Carquip, Powerhaus, and Powerhaus ll make gears also

Gary Fairbanks is a well respected 901 box builder, 2 day turn around etc, there are some that dont like Gary, but they must have caught him on a bad day...I drove up to his shop one day to get a Q fourth, and he basically gave me a 2 hour 901 rebuild lesson! He also has a boatload of parts and gears for 901's
