I know it was in relation to a V8 thread a couple of weeks ago..
but I did some sleuthing this weekend and learned abit that was related to the previous thread...
I learned that there are a few Race cars in colorado running 901 boxes with the 2nd gear F shaft machined off....
There are some interesting track benefits in gearing, but I don't know if it would work on your V8 street car and here is why:
no reverse gear....
When you slide 2nd down into the 1st gear slot, you have to machine the case to give it space to fit... and it also interfere's with the reverse gear so you have to remove the reverse... may not be an ideal situation for a street car...
On the track, they are claiming that they save enough money on gears that they can afford to have the machining done.. but also that the work to the Shaft alone is 800 bucks, so that kinda rules out the CHEAP ness of a street idea.
I think I'm going to try one of these as a back up gear box, but I thought I would pass along the machining info...
