We know its happeng and have no idea why.

The server was rebooted this morning... and it didnt clear up.

It has NOTHING to do with the mail server... we are still getting the email notifications.

Guys,
Im not sure what you are using for an SMTP mailer daemon...

But, check the log files to see how many hits you are taking in any given hour...

It could be that port 25 is to busy...
If that is not the case, could be the server farm is being shut down on port 25 (DOS)

I would reccomend installing your own port sniffer program for testing when you have these problems...makes diagnosis much quicker...

Brad, Andy,

there was a post a while back that a guy was asking pretty specific questions regarding what software you where running, and versions and that type of questioning.

In this game (I think brad might remember me)
Information collection is the key...
You might want to watch the IP address from where those questions originated.

yepp, we're always on the lookout!
i have about 15 web-sites running off this server and i have, on average, one hack-attack per minute. once you get too much exposure, people will start hitting you like crazy. constant battle to keep up.

but in this case it turned out to be a home-made problem <_<
