TDC + rotor at (approx) 12 o'clock... adjust cylinder #1
TDC is determined via fan impeller marking and/or the marking on TOP of the tranny.

TDC + rotor at (approx) 9 o'clock... adjust cylinder #2

TDC + rotor at (approx) 6 o'clock... adjust cylinder #3

TDC + rotor at (approx) 3 o'clock... adjust cylinder #4

repeat and rinse, er, make double check

so, my question is: by the time the rotor turned one revolution (firing cylinder 1, 4, 3, and 2) the impelled fan goes spun 4 revolutions?

just want to confirm the above is true before i start ripping things apart.

on a side note.. please recommend a spark plug.. and how much gap on the plug should there be before i install it?

the flywheel notch is better bet. My distributer is off 180 degrees.

If you use the notch, mark the flywheel when notch is on top per the article, it is straight forward from there.

#1 and #3 would have the TDC mark up at the top side of the engine. The flywheel mark would be visible through the notch on top of the tranny bellhousing, the fan mark would be visible through the timing hole on top of the fan shroud.

#2 and #4 would have the TDC mark down at the bottom side of the engine. The flywheel mark would be visible through the notch on the bottom of the tranny bellhousing, and the fan mark would be buried down inside the fan shroud.

The crank goes through 2 complete revolutions to get all four cylinders to TDC.

so now, my next question.. at TDC i can do cylinder #1 and #3 w/o moving the engine (eventhough the pointer at the distributor is at 12 o'clock, article suggest that distributor marker be at 6 o'clock)

when i have TDC for cylinder #1, i can do the adjust ment for cylinder 1 AND 3?

similarly, if i have the TDC at 180degree for cylinder #2, i can do cylinder #4?

or do i have to do them in series 1, 2,3, then 4

You can only do one cylinder at a time. When #1 is at TDC, #3 will have one or both valves open, which kinda defeats the purpose of getting the cylinder to TDC... So you do have to do them in order.

I double-check the rocker arms of whichever cylinder I am going to adjust. Both of them should have some slack, and you should be able to wiggle them just a little bit. If not, you may need to rotate the engine another half-turn or full turn.
