This is the left side of the dash in my son's 70. It doesn't match the 72 or the 74. What is suppost to go in the hole? I can't find a pic of this part of the car anywhere.
ChrisReale
On my 73 2.0, that is where the fog light switch goes...??? I dont know what yours should be. Korijo nad i were stripping a 73 1.7, and it had two fog light switches....I have no idea why

were all the switches moved over 1 spot to the left and took up the vent hole? it could be a rear defroster switch- does your car have a rearwindow defroster?
ChrisReale
My rear window defroster knob is on the right side of the steering column
Jeffs9146
Could have had a solinoid trunk release button!? Thats where I am going to put mine!

Some of the early cars had a switch in the dash for the wipers, it was later mounted on the steering column. Where is your wiper switch??
Your 70 914 is correct, you are just missing a switch. The 70 914 did not have a heat vent in the middle area on each end of the dash.

It's either the eject button or the 8 track song selector.

Could that be a dash piece from a 6? 'cuz It looks about where the ignition key goes on a 6. confused24.gif

Thanks,

the defrost switch is on the right side of the column (or I think thats what it is), but this car has no rear defrost glass in the back (which could have been changed at sometime). The 72's & the 74 have the wiper lever on the column (right side). There is no vents in the dash on either side.

I drove this car 1600 miles home last fall and never used the wipers. I replaced the wiper blades before leaving BC. Good thing it didn't rain I guess. smile.gif

Next question: What dose the dash type wiper switch look like? And any idea where to find one?

I could do a simple on/off switch or swap the steering column from one of the 72's, but that's a bunch of work.

Are the wipers in the 70's cars a two speed motor? Then a 3 way switch.

isnt the yellow knob in the original pic the fog light switch?

The missing part/empty hole is as Craig describes, wiper switch.

Yellow knob is the foglights.

Anyone have a picture of this missing part? Or know if I can use a on/off toggle switch instead?

Keep your eyes open at the swap meet tomorrow/today for me.

thanks,

The wiper switch on my 70 is on the right side of the stering wheel. From left to right it is Head light, fog light, 4 way flasher, Rear window defoger. On the right side of the steering wheel is the wiper switch and cigar lighter. I think that is it I will check later.

B,

If you would like to see how Porsche equipped the dashboard troughout the production years, you could read pp. 62-63 of Brett Johnson's "914 and 914-6 Porsche; a restorer's guide to authenticity."

I consider this book a valuable source of information regarding 914 originality. The book shows the wiper knob on the right side of the steering column. The question then remains where the rear window defrost knob should be, but since your car doesn't have a one, it's easily solved...

In your photo, the "button" on the right is off-set superiorly. This position fits the hole for the ignition switch in sixes, now probably used for something else (for instance a car alarm LED or, indeed, a rear window defrost knob).

914 greetings, Anton

The VW beetle wiper switch "might" be the same switch. Try to find me a pic.

If it is and you can't find one local, shoot me a email and I'll mail you one N/C.

Hey I might get to drive this week!!!

The wiper switch for the 70 is very small and has two nozzles for washer hoses to exit off of. It is also two speed.

After looking at my 70 today the switch that is missing in that pick is the rear window defoger if your car had it.

on my '70, that's where the fog-light switch is (green),
the wiper switch is to the right of the steering wheel ...

On one of my old cars, a '73, I thought I was really clever. I put a wiper switch out of an early car in an empty hole in the dash and brought a power wire out of the ignition switch into it, making it so that you had to both turn the wiper switch and the ignition switch before you could start the car. Made it real innocuous by putting an AC switch insert out of an old bug into the rubber. At some point the switch failed. Maybe giving it constant power was a little much for a 30 year old wiper switch.

Point being, somebody could easily have added a switch into the dash to serve some purpose or another. It sounds like the switch in question is a rear defrost switch. I seem to recall that those were to the left of the steering column. I know for certain that the wiper switches were on the right.

Okay... here's a thought:

All the 914s had the same dash front, regardless of options. All the holes were predrilled. Is it possible that someone replaced the vinyl and got a too eager cutting out holes without counting switches?

(Don't ask how I know that can happen.)

yepp, sounds like something i would do smile.gif
Anton
Is there original wiring behind the button in question? If so, this makes overenthousiastic drilling by self-appointed car improvement personnel less likely. wink.gif
