OK, so I have been speaking with Scotty B. and have decided that I want him to handle the restoration of my car's chassis .

We have tentatively decided the car will be going to him in April once the winter passes and he has room in his shop.

The problem is how do I get it there? My car is in Alamo, CA 94507 and he is in Charles City, VA 23030. Does anyone in this club happen to be driving a transport truck with room on it? I am willing to pay of course. I am just hoping not to have to pay $800 like the shippers are quoting me.

Timing is completely flexible. The car is fully assembled but not running so it will have to be winched up onto the trunk.

Let me know if you are interested or know someone willing to help an old man out.

$800 sounds like a good deal. Just renting a U haul, tolls, insurance and back and forth gas runs me ~$150+ for a 400 mile round trip. Plus a day driving.

Maybe a group buy on the transport?

I think your doing the right thing. Scott's work is second to none.

Thanks for the feedback. This, as I am sure you know, was not an easy decision; especially knowing the car is going cross-country for the work. But everything I have seen and read about Scotty B tells me he is the right man for the job. I knew I was on the right path when Dr. Evil told me the same thing.

I just know that after he touches the body rust will have vanished and not resurface within my lifetime. I plan on driving this car but still do not plan on driving it in the rain. Of course here in CA that is not asking a lot.

I have to admit that I am really excited about it going to him and can't wait until it happens.

You're making a VERY good decision. The cost to send a car cross-country is much less than the cost to have it done poorly.

$800 for cross country transport is a great deal. I doubt you will find it any cheaper

$800 is an AMAZING deal let me know who will do it for that as i usually pay $1200

$800 is a great deal...although unless Scotty is keeping it your also gonna have to pay to have it sent back and thats gonna add up.

Well the $800 is for open transport....that is one reason why I am waiting until spring. I figure that since the car is going to come apart, it getting dirty in transport is not that big a deal.

Once I nail the deal down, if I can't do better privately, I will post that information on here.

Of course when it returns to CA it will be in an enclosed transport.

It cost me $740.00 to get one from Bakersfield to Memphis in an enclosed trailer and cost me $600.00 to get one from Ventura to Memphis in an enclosed and I work for the company. If you can get it to Memphis I could drop it off at Scott's in April when I go up to Hershey.

$800 isn't bad. I paid something like that for enclosed from Dallas to LA.

Then again, you could sell this roller and use the $800 towards a roller back east.... just sayin'...

I think it is awesome that you are getting you car restored and from what I have seen here Scotty does great work.
But, I've got to ask is it really necessary to send the car across the country for this restoration. Yeaman's auto body in Palo Alto does top notch work and he knows the 914s in and out. I would also imagine that there are some other local shops that do good work. If you dont ship it that is $2k more you can put into the car.
Ultimately it's your decision and I will look forward to seeing the restoration thread.

I'm spending a lot of money and Scott is spending a lot of time fixing the hack job from the previous "Porsche restoration specialist" that was 1/2 hour from my house. Not saying that any other shop doesn't do good work but sometimes piece of mind is worth a lot. These are hobby cars. They don't make financial sense, we own them because they make us happy.

Besides, the travel expense is a drop in the bucket compared to what Cairo94507 will spend on other parts to bring them up to the standard of the paint job.

Yeah, the car is not drivable w/o doing brakes, gas lines, major oil leak repair, engine service, tires, etc. I will not be doing that work just to drive it before it comes apart.

Also, I know there are many reputable shops right here in CA and no disrespect to any of them. I am sure they all do excellent work too. This was a tough call for me. I have read a lot about a lot of shops around here and personally visited some shops. It would be much easier to keep it here in the Bay Area and be able to visit while the work was in progress for sure. However, ultimately, Scotty B. was the clear front runner and came highly recommended and is a 914 freak.

In the end, the cost to transport it will be insignificant when compared to everything else regarding this car. Downside, I will probably only get to visit the car once while it is in progress. However I know Scotty will take lots of pictures of the progress to keep me, and all of you, well informed.

I look forward to seeing this build thread from start to finish as (another) nice restoration documentation.

By the way, at this point, Irish Green is going to be the color. Close seconds are Light Ivory and Adriatic Blue - in that order. Please, please do not try to talk me into painting it the original gold metallic; it ain't going to happen. I know some love that color but I am not in that camp.

Michael, I'm taking my flat bed/car trailer to KY next week for the holidays. It will be empty going there. If you had a way of getting it to Denver before next Tuesday night; I could get it to either Chicago or Lexington, KY for you. That would be over halfway there. Maybe there is someone that could take it from KY to Scotty's place at a later date.
