i just wanted to start a thread to see what you guys do day to day on your cars.

i'll start,

about a month ago, i pulled my engine and trans to put in a new clutch. had the flywheel lightened and resurfaced. but what i didnt know is that i had to shim the little ball that the clutch arm rides on, after a resurfacing. so guess what i did today?

yup, pulled the trans and put an extra washer under the ball. you have to goop up both washers to get it to seal because the threaded hole goes all the way thru to the inside of the trans. i also replaced the plastic cup that the ball rides in. the throwout bearing and its little plastic blocks were fine so i buttoned every thing back up. 5 hours total. i think this has been the cheapest repair yet on my car. $2.75 for the little plastic cup.

what did you do to your 914 today?

I put a new fan belt on my 3.2. What a suck fest. No way to get both hands near the pulley. When I was done my arms felt like Stretch Armstrong.

yesterday I put my original leather steering wheel out of the car and replaced it with a newly leather covered one on a 30 mm longer hub (that gives me more leg space; I'm 6 ft 3")

today I will put out the "very custom" permatune installation out of the car and replace it with the original and newly rebuilt Bosch HKZ

after this I will set the car in hibernation mode biggrin.gif

I drove it to Costco, and back. Usually a 15 minute drive turned into 90 minutes. The long way home. No repairs. No break down. All back roads and no traffic. I did once worry I should be doing something else, but I got over that. Maybe tomorrow I will actually repair something.
Bob L.
I put the bumperetts back on the front and began removing the fuel system for cleaning.

Gendent: Sounds like a thorough test drive and shake down. you should be proud. biggrin.gif

Welded in Autopower roll cage, installed repainted fuel tank. Ready for track in two more weeks !!

Started it, wamred it up, turned it off. Then wished I had more time to fix the brakes.

Dumped half the res. of brake fluid on the floor of the carport for no apparent reason. Right off the master cylinder. Figure its the stupid hard lines from the res. They were a !@#!@ to get in.....or was it just me?

Would you mind starting a thread with pics on this one? I have a stable energies bolt in cage that I have an idea how it goes in, but would like to see others' solutions.

Sorry to hijack, back to the topic... I went to the shop and wished my baby a merry Xmas, hopefully Santa will bring some tools (a welder) so I can start spending some quality time again...

Finished welding a few touchups on the rear floor pan top-side..

Welded in the Tangerine racing rear inner suspension ear reinforcements.. Then ground the welds and rattle-can primer.

Then started taking apart one of the trailing arms.. got the calliper, rotor, shock/spring, dust shield off. Then started looking on here for an easier way to get the hub and bearing out.

Next I have to deep fry a turkey for about 8-10 people tonight.

Oh.. and it snowed a bit.... not enough to break out my snowboard, but its starting to feel like Christmas

Bled my front brakes after tightening up the gland nut on the driver side shock.

Both sides have loosened in just over a year to the point they were clunking over bumps. Used a little loctite this time and a big pipe wrench to tighten it.

I sat at the kitchen table and measured and cut my push-rods.....then installed the tips, while watching football and drinking beer. beer3.gif I wish I could move the engine into the kitchen and finish it. chowtime.gif Much nicer place to work. Believe it or not, that took about 1-1/2 football games. I measured 3 or 4 times then started cutting with my tube cutter which is a very slow process....ROUND AND ROUND AND ROUND. Then file and measure some more.

I have used water, HFE-7100 (dont ask), and denatured alcohol all in it with great results.

WTF.gif ... the regular price has shot up to $90.?

I bought the same U/S cleaner from HF a couple of years ago for only $60.

All the Chinese shit is starting to increase in price and timed to coincide with the fact that we no longer manufacture anything here.

Did anybody else see this coming?

porschefile2010
Mines in bits. Blew the head at #1 cylinder-found it was 103mm bore so going back to 96mm. So new cylinders/pistons and heads.
Found a CB 1.7 case so took it down today to be crack tested dipped and cleaned ready for a rebuild. Now hoping to be going next summer-maybe!
Never give up!

Measured up another Porsche for a possible suspension transplant! Looks like it will work from the measurements, and soon a new build thread should start. shades.gif

Been going on for several years. But you can still catch the deals. What cracks me up is they will list the same tool several times in their flyer for different prices??? So you can easily pay 10% more or less. Also, the stores don't know what the other foot is doing- the internet will list a sale price and the store won't list it reduced until you call them on it.

wow tradisrad, thats pretty crazy. luckily it happened in the driveway.

i was able to take my car out this morning on my 20 mile test loop. and it is shifting perfectly! driving.gif YEAH!

what a difference new bushings, new clutch disc, and an adjusted shifter makes. almost as smooth as one of my vws. i wonder if a cable shifter system would make it any better? or is this just the way the internals are designed? and its as good as its gonna get?

Nice wood panels. What kind of wood?
I plan on doing some wood trim in mine as well. I've seen some really nice stuff.

Turned the Key to On and Fuel pump kicked in, EM Brake Light Flashed, Oil and Temp Light came on. Turned key to start and heard a click and everything went dead, tried Start again and nothing. Waited ten minutes and it did the same thing. Disconnected the Positive battery cable and removed the yellow tack wire from the Negative terminal at the coil, reconnected the Battery and she fired up and ran. Backed out of the garage and saw oil dripping from the Oil Filter. Put it up on ramps and took a oil filter wrench and gave it a 1/4 of a turn to snug it up. Better but still dripping. Coming down from above the filter. Only leaks when running. Drove around to my other garage and parked it for winter storage. Going to look for a good repair shop after Holiday and Income Taxes in the Spring and get everything fixed.

Zach and Joe Sayre are in your area if you need a hand (hmmm, it's easy to volunteer someone else to help biggrin.gif )

I finished the install of CFR SS fuel lines today after I received some parts from Tangerine. One "easy" job and I did it alone ('course the car has the engine out and is up on jack stands so that helped)

OK, it was last Friday...after WAY too long, I'm back on the road. Picked it from Mark at Original Customs...its a 72 with a used 73 1.7 and a De Bernardi enhanced side shift conversion...it shifts like butter! Now the fun begins...again.

BTW, I bought it in May of 72...brand new.
