The car is now masked up ready for the paint damage to be repainted.

Ordered a pair of seal from Porsche. Ordered new window winder handles and some hardware screws, clips etc.

The targa roof is in pretty good condition so that has had coat of paint adhesive in readiness to repaint.

One of the hoses to the front oil cooler burst around 30 miles from home. Dumped all the oil from the engine before i noticed it, luckily very low revs, just above idle.

Managed to fix the hose, refill the engine and limp home. Oilpressure was normal all the way. Will drain the oil this week and look for false gold.... >.<

I drove the bug to cars & coffee this morning. Parking next to a shedding + sappy tree with a cool breeze was NOT a good idea. I was on my way up to Newport to go show the car to my dad and take him for a ride to Father's Day lunch. Wanting the car to make a good first impression, I ended up spending 45 minutes on a side street wiping and polishing all of the sap/crap off of the black paint. My poor, lonely 914-6 sits in the garage and waits patiently for me to get over my beetle love affair.....

Wow, crazy clean garage and car. Looks great and love the color!

Ground wire in the distributor was fried do to a bonehead move on my part. Soldered on a new ground wire, and rebuilt the distributor (using Rich's excellent 'how to' thread).
Installed new points, cap, plugs, wires, set the timing and now it's running like a top just in time for the nice weather in Seattle. smile.gif

Very cool. My dear old mum grew up in Summit, graduated from Summit High School. It's a pretty town.

Played hookie from Rothsport and worked on my own car. piratenanner.gif

Started with attacking my weeping output shaft seals. In the last year or so a drop was finally starting to hit the garage floor. sad.gif
Used a combo of the factory seal installer and a disk from my bearing and race installer. This is a before shot. New seal is perfectly flush with the inner lip.

Then on to changing out the left rear wheel bearing. This time leaving the trailing arm in the car. Pulled the hub with my 5# slide hammer and a fabricated tool.

Then onto R & Ring the wheel bearing using my SIR TOOLS copy of the factory tool.

Then the bad news. Started breaking down the half shafts. When I pulled apart the first one I found some pretty serious wear.

Another hooky day ...............

Worked a couple hours at RS then drove out to Forest Grove to go thru my 1/2 shaft stash to see if I could build 2 half shafts. Took breaking down 7 half shafts and inspecting 14 CV joints to come up with 4 nice ones and 2 maybes.

3 gallon, 60# bucket. $129.85. It will take a couple days to sort. Lots of new Winzer hardware that I couldn't get in yellow.

Doug, you ready ?

Seems like a bargain. The sorting out is another story..

I got under my 1970 garage find today and was rather happy that the acid hole in the engine compartment looks minor from the bottom. The longs are in great shape. 15 years in LA did not screw up this car too much. Lover the mess under the driver’s seat. Broken driver’s window. Pulled the seats and trashed them for Garolds Tan 70-71 interior.

Need a new interior light.

Funny that these match books and recites are from places that I went to in the 70s. Living in L.A.

Yesterday I got up early and pulled the transmission out of Betty's car to replace the rear main seal. Got it all put back together by 2pm, and drove it to the gas station.

It only has one leak now. The speedo drive is leaking. Ordered the part from 914 rubber to fix that leak.

Gotta get her car ready for the trip to Helen, GA for Okteenerfest.

going to be a busy week,
i took the whole week of july 2-6 off from work, i hope to get the motor back in my car, but so much more to do to be ready for Okteenerfest!

I just swapped the PMS fuel cell for a stock tank. Installed the charcoal canister next to the battery where the 4 banger comuputer normally goes. I also installed a stock 3.2 fuel pump. Much quieter than the gt3 pump.

I looked at the Patrick's style fuel cell....then found out it only holds approx 10 gal sad.gif Stock is best for the street and a bit of track work in my opinion shades.gif

Finally got to test fit my suby engine that I bought from jrust. Nice fit. Did the lower car over engine method. Mounted casters on cradle to roll it into position. Worked slick.

1st time playing in the garage for almost a month and it wasn't even my 914. Had a good time wrenching on it, a little nervous with the brand new paint job!

Yes, this is a real /6, not original motor however....I think he said a destroked 2.7? Fun to drive and shifts perfect. Took it to redline a few times today.

Work done? New Porterfield brake pads up front, had problems with rear which I will be making another thread on.

Well not today but on Friday. We cleaned the seat belts in the 1970 Garage find 4 that I bought. Bruce stone told me how to clean the old belts. Interesting that the seat belt receivers are dated 1969 and 1970. Car date is 6-1970

The water was very dirty. Soap up and wash twice or in till the water is not black, then rinse twice. Hang till try.

Yup, washed them that way! You can crank up the spring tension on the retraction before you rewind the belt too!

Early cars, up to (I believe) half-way through '72 with the non-moveable passenger seat had non-retractable belts. I'll have to try Bob's method on our '71's belts at some point in time idea.gif

WOW. Fricking rocket ship.

Got the ignition lock for Elwood out of the car and had the locksmith cut a new key from it. I also had them make a key with only one side cut. That key is for making new keys, and it will never wear because it won't work in the car. They also cut the two new Porsche blanks I bought.

Still waiting on the engine mount so I can pull the motor and replace the seals.

Also waiting on the driver's window track. It's in transit.

On the Igor project, I found the flywheel I need to work with the clutch. Now I just need to order it.

Finished the oil leak repair project on Betty's car. Everything is dry... for now.

Waiting on the CFR oil pressure boost piston kit.

My being unemployed has been good for the 914s.... biggrin.gif
