Yesterday, valve clearances (glad I paid somebody else to do it!), and engine and trans oil changes. Replaced EMPI alumin(i)um valve covers with stock covers and bailing clips. Now the valve covers fit and don't touch wiring loom...
Today signed for a big box from 914rubber.com full of seals necessary to keep the UK weather out of my 914... Don't ya just love spending money on your 914? I do... smile.gif

Mounted $17 Oil Catch Can

Purchased this compact oil catch can on Amazon and mounted it on the battery tray: Tasan Racing Universal Aluminum Baffled 2-Port Oil Catch Can/Tank/Air-Oil Separtor Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HH97RFR/ref=cm...i_Vwg5Cb4R9B0S6

The included nylon hose fittings fit stock 12-13mm German cloth braided hoses perfectly. The can’s mounting bracket was easy to attach to an angle bracket to connect to the battery tray and this location affords easy access to the can for emptying and cleaning.

Simply plumbed line in from oil chimney PCV valve and line out to manifold.

Took a ride and actually noticed small improvements to an already well running engine-crisper acceleration, smoother idle, and less oil smell overall. Checked can after the 40-mile spirited run and there was a noticeable coat of oil in the bottom of the can-maybe a quarter to half teaspoon.

Even though the engine is port injected and not as susceptible to valve deposits as a direct injection engine, I think an oil can is helpful to keep oil mist out of the combustion chamber. Will be interested to see if it eliminates the occasional smoke show on first start of the day.

BTW this can seems identical to the Mishimoto Compact 2-port oil can that retails for over $130. It is either a very good copy or more likely it comes out of the same factory in China.

Nissan side feeds are kind of known for that.

Have you considered a top feed conversion if there is one?

Spent the better part of 5 hours cleaning and restoring marker lights and turn signal buckets. New gaskets on all pieces Did Spokes LED upgrade. Probably a little anal on the cleaning but I am good with it. Let the bucket bulb end soak in lemon juice to clean corrosion out of inside of socket. No good way to get it done.
Chi-town
CLR bathroom cleaner actually works pretty well for that.

Swapped out my old, puffy, sticky visors for the 914Rubber versions. Very nice - not concours, but they don't pretend to be. Just a nice, modern alternative.

Fixed the driver door key lock which was non-operative - the lock/unlock cam screw had come loose. Cleaned and lubed the lock cylinder and added the 914Rubber tumbler seal.

Shift linkage couplings.

Spent most of the day fighting a stripped out Allen-socket on a cone screw. Not sure who effed it up, but I’m betting on the garage I took the car to last year (I wanted a “professional” to give it a going over after years of DIY stuff on my part).

Hated having to drill it out, but it couldn’t have gone much better if I’d used a drill press:

I was able to (hand-held) drill straight through the screw and sever the tip of the cone without touching any of the threads…

Lucky me—the other screw was in good shape and came out pretty easily. So did the remains of the ball cup bushing:

barf.gif

Could explain why the shifter felt like a broomstick in a bucket.

Put it all back together using new coupler bushings, cup bushing, and cone screws with locking nuts:

Sorry, can't remember the cone screw vendor, but they're on this site (please chime in--I want to give credit where credit is due cheer.gif ).

Oh, and while I was in there, I used some parts of my old parts plus new parts from from 914rubber.com (Thanks Mark! bye1.gif ) to make it look a little more original:

Unbelievable change in shifter feel. WAY more precise, not "loose" in gear. It's going to take some getting used to...so 70+ mile test drive. NICE!

WOW, never seen anyone go that far to polish one ... looks stunning. You must either be young, or just have lots of spare time confused24.gif

Questions:

1. Are early air boxes different than late ones?

2. Are they interchangeable?

The reason I ask, I purchased one of 914 Rubber's inlet screens for my '71 (along with a new seal kit). Early air boxes didn't have a screen, but I don't know if I can just install the screen in the early box, or if need to get a late box confused24.gif

Replaced my dead 3 port fuel pump with a new Bosch 2 port pump today. Cars starts on a flick of the key now. That's the good news. The bad news is I now have 2 leaky fuel injectors instead of just the one I had before the pump went out. Two steps forward, one step back
euro911
What's the pressure with the new pump?

Did you run a bypass and connect to the return line back to the tank (like the 3-port did).

@Mueller

Just had this conversation with @SocalAndy you want to stay away from white lithium grease as it heats ups, thins and makes a mess. The suggestion is to go with a small amount of wheel bearing grease that won't thin.

If you put blue LED bulbs in your fogs you would have green fog lights to go with the bumper color.

Made good on a commitment to the previous owner (yesterday, actually). I purchased this car 8 years ago, drove it for a few years, then dove into a full-on restoration. Promised the PO that I would bring it by to show him when completed.

Resto took over 6 years end to end, due to these things always taking longer and being more expensive than expected, plus a couple of unanticipated hang-ups along the way. Meanwhile gent I purchased the car from developed Parkinson's and I hate to say it, but I was seriously concerned it would become a race between when the car was completed and if he would be able to see the end result. Suffice to say he was very happy to see the car again and I was very happy he got to see it. Sadly, he's no longer in a position to go for a ride, let alone take the wheel.
