Getting car ready for a 1500-mile round trip to Germany for Bad Camberg vintage VW meet, go see my friends in the VW archives at Wolfsburg, visit VW Classic museum at the old Karmann works in Osnabrück then to European Bug-In in Belgium and back home. Fingers crossed I don't need to break out the toolkit...

@KSCarrera
Bad Camberg is right around the corner from where i grew up!
I was born just a few miles away in Katzenelnbogen and spent my younger years annoying people in Limburg.

PS: Say hello to everyone, chances are i know a lot of them.

PPS: This was my ride back in the day, '74 1303S Super Beetle with a T4 2.0L and 911 whale tail

I actually worked on my own car! laugh.gif
Swapped the 22mm hollow torsion bars out for stock ones for the moment
Installed the stainless front brake hoses
Installed my front sway bar
Swapped out a bunch or hardware for freshly plated ones
Cleaned up the weather strip channel getting ready for a new seal

Drove the car for the first time in 2 years. Had a problem with the clutch which would not disengage, but after that it ran like a dream.
I had forgotten how much fun it was to drive a 914

Top off, beautiful day, running great, and an open road - it is a ton of fun and really doesn't get any better.

Mine ran smooth as silk today as I moved her from Virginia across the bay bridge to her new home on the Eastern Shore. I promised she'll never have to sleep outside in the rain, ice, or snow again smile.gif

And I introduced her to her new "power pack" sitting there in the corner on a furniture dolly just in front of her. It will be a few weeks, but that's going in at some point. Just need to move all my tools. And my lift. And...a bunch of other stuff.

So THAT's what a clean, uncluttered garage looks like!

Fixed my newly chattering 1st gear by finding that two of the nuts on the transmission bell-housing had backed off and were way loose. WTF.gif
JFG
The last time i drove it i heard a slight tapping, checked it out today and the drivers side sway bar bracket was loose. So a tighten up and a quick check over other fixings and all was good.also lined up the front wheels.

and found that the outer cover on the passenger side heat exchanger has detached again. can't get the grinder out yet but needless to say both will come off.

Going to take the boy out for a proper drive in it tomorrow evilgrin.gif

@ericoneal ... Yes. Install them and torque the nuts to specifications (look in the Haynes manual).

My new PWB rebuilt 911S aluminum calipers are on the car and I ditched the backing plates. Pagid pads.

It really seems a bit quicker after putting my car on a diet with the lost unsprung weight.

Finally - did something 914 related.

Boxed-up, labeled and stored some more parts that recently arrived, so I know where they are when the time comes to use them.

Also, finalized arrangements to have a new 2.0L banana muffler shipped here next week ... mueba.gif

Big thanks to Keith (914Toy). We lowered the front and rear, reinfected a Torsion bar, installed the tie-rod bump steer kit, and aligned the car. Watching an experienced person is great; learned a lot and found that lowering a car can run into unexpected issues.
Here’s the before pic

The after pics:
With 195 x 60 x 16 tires
The rear fender lip is 22 5/8
The front fender lip is 23 1/2
The rake is about 3/4”

agree.gif looks great Jim! The shop here wants $400 for the half day he says it will take to lower balance and realign. I am afraid to get into this myself as you said if you lower everything changes and has to be reset. How long did it take?

We were at it about 5 hours; several unanticipated issues were addressed. Fortunately, Keith's experience got the project over several bumps. We also did the "string" alignment; that added an hour by itself.
