driving.gif Me too Sir Andy.

Took mine for a 1 hour drive in nice country twisties in my area, and actually think I enjoy driving the 914 more than my Cayman S.....it's just more fun - have yet to find a curve that it flinches at, regardless of speed.

Running the $$$ Bosche VR, GEN light stays on most of the time, but system is charging.....after shutting engine down, battery voltage was 12.94. Was showing 13.4 running several weeks ago.....glad it's charging, but why is the light on and why aren't I seeing 14.1? ????????

My /6 started running like crap leaking oil and sounded like I had a head gasket issue, WTF. Part of the problem was I had a rocker shaft get loose (oil leak), fixed that and started it up, still major noise and running like poop.
Put it on the car lift running and my new PT wrench spotted a nice little flame popping out by the header. A screw that blocked off an air injection port had fallen out, got a M10 valve adjuster screw and stuck it in...problem solved.

Yea! My /6 is a driver again! woo hoo!

Spent the last few days doing some much needed maintenance. I've been away from the car focusing on career stuff for the last few years and neglected the 914.

I lit a fire under my butt the other day, and drained the fuel, changed the oil, cleaned the carbs, and finally installed the Tangerine linkage I've had sitting around. After synching the carbs it runs better than I think it ever has on the carbs. The idle is super smooth. I'm sure it could be better, but it's pretty darn good for now. Car fired on the second crank, which was nice.

@mr.nobody , get that car into use, sounds like she is ready!

Drove it a bit the last few days. Running good but still needs some adjustments. Very happy to be back on the road.

Ordered a new shift linkage kit from Tangerine Racing for the 74. Hopefully it will make it to San Diego this week while I have access to a lift. http://www.tangerineracing.com/shiftlinkage.htm
Everything I've read here states that it makes a huge difference.

So far I'm loving my Tangerine setup. But more adjustment is needed but I think it's already far better than the cross bar setup I had.

I bought 2 cheapo 195/60s to put on a couple of steelies so my car will be a roller. I need to get it out of the shop to put a better floor down. They replaced some well dryrotted tires that would not hold air.

195/60s on the rear with 165s on the front...DRAG CAR!

Seriously I will have to drag the thing out of the shop. lol-2.gif

Hopefully next weekend I will get the car out and the floor started. When the car is outside I may try starting it for the first time since I owned it and probably the first time since 2007 judging from the last inspection sticker.

In 2014 when I first went to the DMV at AAA they wanted over $800 for past due registration and penalties. The PO had told me reg was non-oped so I shouldn't have had back fees. Talked with PO and he agreed to split the cost with me but then never paid me and quit responding to text, email.
So about a month ago I went back to AAA and had them look it up and this time they said it was above the limit AAA is allowed to process and I would have to go into a DMV office, AAA's limit is $1000.

I made and appointment and dreading it I went in on Thursday and got it handled.
Actually got someone that was good and friendly.
I registered a old past due trailer for$10, got my "Real ID" to replace my expiring drivers license and got back fees waived on the 914. Registered through August of 2020, use tax and what ever other stuff CA tacks on for a total of $350. Not bad considering it was over 1000 going in.

yikes.gif CA DMV still gigged you for $350. - for 47 year old car? That's just highway robbery. mad.gif

I have almost all of my CA vehicles on Non-Op now, I refuse to pay them their outrageous jacked-up fees. They want $140. to register my 98 Harley for one year. I plan to register it in AZ the next time I get back there ... AZ DOT only wants $160. for a 5-year registration ... plus, AZ insurance is a lot cheaper too.

I don't have the break down of the fees but part of it was the "use tax" which is sales tax on a used vehicle. I believe it was about $140 for the registration for 2020.

Since I don't live anywhere or own property other than CA, I am a bit limited in registration choices.

I forgot about the 'use tax' thing. A couple years ago, I ordered some personalized black plates for a car that I hadn't paid the annual registration for almost 40 years. They didn't have the planned non-operational vehicle option back then, so I never signed up for it. I had to re-register the car to take possession of the new plates, and the clerk I dealt with tried to invoke an astronomical back-fee penalty.

I went armed with info on historical vehicles, something most DMV employees apparently aren't aware of. After arguing with the clerk, I asked to speak with a manager. I presented special DMV vehicle codes to the manager and she left for about a 20 minutes, probably to research those VCs. When she returned, she took my paperwork to a different clerk and she had me sign an affidavit that the car had non been driven on public roadways since it was last registered, and pay $75. to register the car. I had previously paid the $50. fee for the personalized black plates, so all was good. They also made me relinquish my original title and issued a new title for the car.

Here's an article that explains how it works ... https://forums.aaca.org/topic/179412-no-bac...-in-california/

I realize this isn't going to help you out now - I doubt the DMV will refund you anything, but remember it for the next time idea.gif

Met a local 914 guy (Mike) & became friends at a local car show on Saturday. His 914 HAS A 420HP (RWHP) Chevy 350 in it. I discover that he is a Type 4 VW engine expert, who raced VW’s & tuned their engines and Weber’s for years - before he got his 914. He put me in touch with a Weber genius in Colorado Springs who has been super helpful.

First thing he said was that the 36mm venturi’s in the 44’s were way to big for the engine, and I needed to put in 32mm venturi’s. Guess what? I was told that on 914world long ago, AND HAD THE 32mm's sitting on my bench. Installed them last night.

Wow. Engine runs 10x better with the 32’s, Even idles nicely at 1,000 rpm now. Runs very smoothly, transitions very smoothly from low RPM to high.

Bad news? I’d guess a 50% loss in power when throttle is more than 50% open with the 32mm venturi’s. Hopefully increasing my main jet size will correct most of that. We’ll see. They are .135's now w/ A/C of .175......thinking of going to .155 mains and .200 on the A/C.........

Experts thoughts are welcomed........Chris???

Funny you say that about the 914 versus Cayman S... I have the same thoughts... 914 is a raw driving experience. No power anything but the motor. Cayman S just does it all with finesse.... Drove it to an every Sat. eve. car enthusiast get-together that usually has 20 - 30 interesting cars, from oldie goldies to new exotics - kind of a smaller version of Cars & Coffee.

Only 5 Corvettes were there, only interesting one was a '61. Needless to say, the 914 didn't fit in too well. One of the Vette owners used to have one. But no one made fun of it - but a young man who was a really smart car expert who kept saying, "It's a Volkswagen!"

Would have fit in well with the group that was there 2 months ago.....

Not sure whether to put this here or in the new thread on jetting......

To review, my car came to me with Weber 44's that almost everyone told me were too big for my '76 2.0. But they were installed, jetted and tuned by the local Porsche dealer here and car was running perfectly with them in 2005/1,000 miles ago. Mike Tomlinson's Weber Bible says the carbs will fit and jets are within his parameters:

Mains, .135; Air, .175; E-tube, F11; Idle .50; Pump .50, 36mm venturis.

Friend in whose new barn the car was abandoned said car was running perfectly when parked - he had just ridden in it.

Engine surprised me with its power accelerating, but months of struggling and I cannot get carbs tuned to idle well. Then installed the 32mm venturis I bought over a year ago because experts here so recommended. Installed them last week, idle much improved but still not good enough.

BUT the 32's brought a huge loss in power - 50% or more my butt-dyno says. Totally unacceptable......

Finally diagnosed problem had to be vacuum leak, but where? No vacuum lines & new carb gaskets. So I checked the intake manifold bolts. EUREKA! All of them were LOOSE! Only 1,000 miles after being installed! Shame on the local Porsche dealer. Tightening them quieted noisy engine (thought it was exhaust).

Tightened them up (new gaskets soon), and just last night got the idle smooth, adjusted mixture screws, and then balanced the carbs, and great news is I got about half of the power I lost back. This little engine had acceptable power with the 36mm venturis, and I know what it can do with them. And it ran smoothly with them years ago.

So with the intake manifold on tightly now, I may put the 36mm venturis back in...

But first I'm going to try .145 and .150 main jets and see what happens......

Feedback from the Weber experts is welcomed..........

FWIW, the schnor washers used on the CVs work well for the intake stud nuts. Using cut washers requires quite a bit of torque. The added CW thickness can cause issues dependent on the intake bases.
Gatornapper
Months ago I was having trouble with the linkage to the starter valves on my Webers, and several here suggested disconnecting them - that they were really not needed and could only cause problems if left in the on position.

I agreed and disconnected them, another reason being that my 2.0 is the best starting engine I've ever known, and is running after 1 revolution every time.

But as it's gotten colder, I've been having to pump the accelerator for a longer time before the engine warms up enough to idle on its own.

So what I did was purchase 2 cheap throttle control levers/lines for a lawn tractor for $13 each at Tractor Supply.

I mounted them in the engine bay just over and to the rear of the relay block, connecting the left one to the starter valve on the left carb, and right to the right.

Now, for a cold engine and cold day, I open the engine bay, move both levers to the rear (idle for a lawn tractor) turning ON the starter valves. Engine starts perfectly, idles at a higher RPM, and as it warms, I move the throttle levers to full open position, which turns the starter valves OFF.

It all is over in a few minutes, and with the engine bay lid open, I'll never drive off with the starter valves left on. Because the engine would be idling too fast.

For me, the perfect solution to both having the use of the starter valves (which work great) and eliminating the possible problem of leaving them on.......

Pic coming soon.....

GN
