Wired up the Honda ECU to a new fuse block mounted behind the passenger seat.

I also got tired of hitting my head on the targa top while working on the car so I decided to take the top off. Took about 20 minutes since I had to Google how to take the targa top off, it has been that long since off.

driving.gif Drove it! First time since I drove it home 1 mile off the trailer. After an intake, throttle body, & FI refresh, I drove it for about 6 miles. Ran well, but it seemed like my second choice throttle return spring still didn't have enough ass to close the butterfly properly after letting off the throttle. Installed a shorter, heavier spring, drove it 10 more miles and the car ran like a top! It shifts well, no grinding, or popping out of gear and runs strong.

The temp gauge on the center console seems to function properly and held steady after it was up to running temp. I definitely want to do the valves, make sure dwell, & timing are spot on, as well as put in new plugs and wires. That said, I'm pretty stoked right now. Other impressions: passenger mirror is shaky/wonky, definitely needs rear shocks & probably springs, needs a rear window butyl tape seal and the shift rod cover needs reinstalled... not to mention tons of cosmetic stuff.....projects for another day.

driving.gif Rickb45 and I drove both of ours down to see Scott b near Charles City to discuss body & paint options to get my '76 back to its original Malaga Red. Car has very few rust spots, and Scotty, being perhaps the best Porsche (esp. 914) body guys in Virginia had a wealth of knowledge for us. A great visit with a great guy and learned a ton - he knows these cars so well it's amazing. Think I have a game plan for how to proceed thanks to Scotty and Rick, and hope to begin working on the few rust spots when winter comes. Total drive on a perfect day was about 90 miles - my 914 was running like a dream.

Meanwhile, Rick was having some intermittent ignition problems - mostly I think from running an 009 distributor cap on an 050 distributor. It's worked fine for 7 years, but once Rick took the cap off, things seemed to go downhill. Whoever put the 009 cap on had to grind off the wide piece that fits in the dizzy notch - as they are in completely different places on 2 dizzy's - so he has nothing to keep his cap from rotating about 10 deg. One of us will post a query on another thread.

I so enjoyed today's drive that after supper I needed another 914 fix. So I did another about 60 miles in country twisties - and came home very satisfied.

No car in the world drives like a 914. red914.jpg 14.gif

I've been thinking about building a loft in my RV garage. With the 14' ceiling, I could definitely create some (much needed) extra storage space. Also want to get the floors in both garages epoxied idea.gif

I had a Simplex kart too - from age 10 ~ 15 ('64 ~ '69). Swapped out the original West Bend 580 for a Mac-6 at some point. Not sure whatever became of the kart confused24.gif ... but I still have the 580 in the garage here smile.gif

But then I, my son, my daughter plus 2 friends spent the day on our motorcycles in the twisties of Powhatan, Cumberland, Fluvanna and Goochland. We did about 100 miles too.

So now you'll have to lead me on that route again sometime - and I'll bring Rickb45 and maybe 914V8inVA too.

Nagging me since I got my 914 has been a passenger side inside door handle on the driver's door - very inconvenient.....bugging me every time I drive.

I had a discussion with a few people knowledgeable in 964 engines, and it was determined that my oil system woes on the 4L engine are self-induced. I was runing straight 50 weight oil, which caused the excessive oil pressure on cold startup.

Last night, with my lovely wife's help (I am on limited duty right now), I got the oil cooler system on my 4.0L fixed and reinstalled the exhaust. Filled it with 20W/50 weight Valvoline VR1 oil and fired it up. It sounds great.

I also reinstalled the front turn signal LED boards. I didn't know when I bought them they had a blanking circuit. I don't particularly like that. So later down the road, I am going to get a new set from Spoke that doesn't have the blanking circuit.

By the time we got done, I was hurting bad, so I called it a night. I still need to test drive it, but I don't foresee any issues.

Yesterday I was hooking up the fuel lines to the engine and noticed the fuel pressure regulator was corroded inside, so I pulled the fuel rails off and injectors.

The injectors are being sent out today for cleaning, testing with all new seals and filters installed.

After the "flatbed" event a couple days ago, I finally had time to troubleshoot my no-start issue.

Charged the battery overnight. Still no start. confused24.gif
Tested the Mallory Unilite and the module was fine.
Changed coil back to the original I had swapped out two days ago.

Turned key and fired right up cheer.gif
But... alternator light stayed on and voltmeter showed no charging. dry.gif

At that point, I walked away because I REALLY didn't look forward to swapping out the alternator wacko.gif

Did some research on 914World and began troubleshooting.
After swapping VR and wiggling wires, alternator was working intermittently ???
Took it for a quick run down the road and alt light was off but then came back on.
I figured it was a loose wire... just had to find it.
Eventually I found culprit - loose connection on the relay board.

Issue resolved piratenanner.gif
euro911
I had a similar issue with the charge light in 'HOWARD'. Found the cause to be a broken* fuse on the relay box in the engine bay - *not blown, broken ... right where the thin portion met the bullet portion at one end. Vibration of the running motor kept it moving apart intermittently.

Replaced the fuse and all was good again.

I got a text earlier from Scott (scottthephotog) and his wife. They were going to take their 914 out for a drive. Well, we got the 4.0 running again during the week, so we took it and Elwood out. It was about an hour's drive, and I was done. Wide tires, no power steering and already sore shoulders got the best of me.

We had fun, Scott took pictures, and all of us got some sorely (pun intended) needed Teener time.

I spend ~6 hours cleaning oil out of the engine bay, the puke tank in the "plumbing" decided to spit maybe ~2 quarts out into the left side of the engine, spilling down thru the DS helll hole and onto the headers. Very strange, after clean up, engine starts runs makes good pressure and I can't find any leaks or anything out of the ordinary. $hit day though when I thought I was going on a nice morning run with the fellow 914world group

It has the oil "keg" in the frunk--hold something crazy like 12 quarts +
This car was a concours queen for a while so it was CW clean everywhere and when I got a hold of it, it only took a weekend to get it back to white glove status.

Engine oil level to full? Happened to me before..

That's the going theory--I hadn't added any oil but the previous caretaker may have. PMS suggested that since it was the first real run in the past ~6yrs for the car that there may have been oil that settled in one of the breather lines or whatever and my "spirited" drive to get up to OC may have finally brought things to the perfect storm where it tried to expand and resulted in the mess.

My shoulder blades hurt today from rolling around underneath it yesterday mopping all the oil off.

I've started it up several times and it's making good oil pressure, checked the 'keg' with an improvised dip stick (welding rod) and oil level seems good. Once the oil was mopped off the underside and headers I can't find anything leaking anywhere confused24.gif

Going to take Oscar up on his generous offer of borrowing his trailer and take it out to Patrick Motorsports this week for a sanity check before running it again. I'm very apprehensive to just drive it with the 3.8 motor because if there is something at play I can't afford a catastrophic event on that motor, literally, its above my pay grade blink.gif

Got what I wanted on the trailing edge of the rear wing this evening. Making up the edge sure made it come out clean.

2.5 hours running a blast cabinet. Oiled the parts that are being set aside for plating, then painted the trailing arms and pivot brackets.

Another Porsche friend helped me drop the engine on the '73.

SKL1 and I have similar timing - but his engine looks new (so I wonder why he dropped it), but mine clearly hasn't been dropped ever and has 44 years of dirt, grease & junk covering it.

Dropped it today with the great help of Rickb45 who is my close-by resident friend who is an 914 expert on so many things. Few hangups on right carb where fuel line attaches and a couple other glitches, but overall went well.

With car on my 10k lb. lift, we dropped engine onto 4x12's on a motorcycle lift table which gives me multiple great heights to work on engine.

Long list of TTD's (Things to Do): new alternator (harness looks great, like rest of car - as you'd expect for a car with only 60k miles ), install cooling vanes a former PO had removed, install new T'stat from AwesomePowderCoating, remove, clean & repaint tins, completely & thoroughly clean both engine & transmission, clean & repaint engine bay - and whatever else shows up as needing to be done.

Here's a pic of Rick at the end of the job - a huge public thanks for all the help!

PS: note how clean and rust free the pan is...incredible......as Rick keeps telling me, this is a gem of a car in amazing condition in every way......

I have to finish assembling 'HOWARD's motor (all the F.I. stuff) before it goes back in.

I'll be dropping the Ghia's drive train first though - to replace the howling transmission as well as some other goodies that go between the motor & the tranny.

I was able to borrow his trailer to take my 6 from San Diego to Phoenix to Patrick Motorsports to investigate the oil issue I had heading to the SoCal drive last weekend.

1st time I'd ever been there, they built the car originally and my gamble was that since they built it, they'd be able to spot any DAPO issues immediately and resolve them... That happened within 15 minutes of them looking at the car. Root cause of the oil puking event was that DAPO (brother of the original owner, who didn't "know" the car) had oil changed to Brad Penn, not an oil you should be using in a 3.6 motor that wants full synthetic.

Good news for me, easy fix, also got to inspect the other filters and everything was really clean and no special suprises like engine glitter (thank god!)

Wow do they have some amazing stuff there, I held back from taking a bunch of pictures to be respectful of the owner and the customer's but did grab a few Click to view attachment

Got the wiring harness out.

Hi,

My '72 1.7L will be going in for paint soon (I hope!) and I think that I should pull the wiring harness.

Is it much of a problem?

Any tips/tricks much appreciated.
