Coincidentally, I'll be digging one of the 'P' cars out of storage and trailering it to AZ when we're finished with a bunch of CA projects ... looks like tentatively sometime in June idea.gif

Pulled the carbs, intake manifolds and tins off the engine & started cleaning it up. Want to paint the tins before putting them on. Put in cooling vanes PO had removed - actually the flap over the cooler was in, but left to flap freely so that some air was flowing over the cooler, the air pressure was probably lifting it some so oil cooler was probably only getting a fraction of the air it should have. Have new T'stat ready to go in after cleaning engine.

Spent way too much time removing the stuck and rusted screws holding on the headlight chrome ring. Tossing the headlights that came on the car.

Had to break out the Dremel® to cut the adjusters and the 3 per screws that held on the headlight ring. Someone used steel screws which rusted a bit.

Thank you to Rich @914werke who came through again by sending me some sheetmetal so I can fabricate throttle body cover for my V8 car. A few more hours of trimming and painting left...here it is mocked up. Also added expanded sheet metal to fender vents...paint later.

Since all the cool kids are doing it, and I'm cleaning up the engine bay anyway, it seemed like it was time to freshen up the charcoal canister a bit. I'll add the new charcoal tomorrow and reinstall. Thanks for the tips Ian!

You guys are gettin' it done in fine fashion aktion035.gif

I yearn for the day I can get back to work on the car(s).

Awesome job! Kudos!

Now whatever I do will be looking 2nd rate.........no way I can match what you've done!

Gunked everything and then pressure-washed (yes, all holes plugged or capped, made special covers to bolt over the intake manifold ports) with 2500psi, and STILL lots of places the black gunk, sometimes almost 3/16" thick, would NOT come off.

Almost hammer & chisel hard. 2nd attempt will be tomorrow, using Oven-cleaner.

I'm not going down to metal on my tins tho..........

Over the past week:

Got new 914 Rubber visors and installed them using the pins from the original visors, which I still have but are nearly disintegrated.

Installed heater hose from 914 Rubber

Capped a couple of interior screw holes with caps from... you guessed it, 914 Rubber

Tightened the thermostat cable to the engine flaps

Hoping to driving.gif this weekend!

Finished taking off the wrapping on the engine harness. That pile is what was taken off of the harness. The blue tape is used at factory splices using barrel splices (closed I believe)

A little more massaging of intake cover I started this weekend.

Not a fan of excess wiring or exposed trunk cut outs that are typical with subaru or V8 engine conversions...

Did you test to see if the top will still fit in there? From the pictures, it doesn't look like it will.

Started and/or finished a few small projects...

Installed BD Stone's Heater J Tube block off plates...unfortunately I ordered the nice black powder coated ones, when I should have ordered the half painted, patina-laiden ones to match my tins.

Reinstalled the freshened up charcoal canister...

Started making an inexpensive GT-type front oil cooler shroud mold, that will ultimately be fiberglassed if all goes well...

No pics, but soda-blasted 44 years of crud off of my engine, tranny and heat exchangers - yes, every tiny hole/opening to engine well-sealed.......beginning to look half-way nice.....heat exchangers looking almost new - if you don't look too close......

Cleaning & painting the tins will be next.......

OH! Just got incredible front floor mats from Stoddard with "914 - 50 Years" (in German) and they are stunning! Quality is superb. Really nice upgrade to the interior - highly recommend them.....here....

If your output flanges align with your wheel centers you can keep that dipstick by straightening it and drilling a ~3/4" hole in the trunk floor, Throw away the brace unless you intend to hook it to a sky hook. The tubing on the slave cylinder can be straightened and re-bent to suit your needs. Use the tube that carried the old clutch cable as conduit for your AN-3 hose. It will keep it from sagging and trapping air bubbles. Did you buy that Forester trans? Just finished converting mine to 2 wheel drive yesterday.

Nice and clean. I'll wait 'till I test drive your car before I buy a similar transmission. smile.gif

Do you have a set of transfer punches to get that bolt pattern for the new plate?
ValcoOscar
I didn't care for the look of the plain LSV8 so I fabricated some brackets and valve covers. Simple bolt on, only three 6M nuts hold down brackets to existing studs. I also used 6m bolts to attach covers. Took me 4 hours and lots of curse words.
I will powder coat later.

On the last 914 drive my ignition switch finally died and my daughter and her boy friend had to push start my car. So... replaced the ignition switch and while I was in there I replaced the upper steering column bearing, had Hollywood speedometer rebuild my tach with new glass, capacitors, etc. The Tach needle no longer bounces around like a cable operated 914 speedometer. I also finally wired up the turning indicator dash lights that stopped working after switching to spoke LED’s. Everything works now and looks much better.
Sorry about the glare in the photo.

Put the new 914Rubber seat adjuster handles on the '74. Makes such a difference having them there.

Also cleaned up and resprayed the wiper arms. They were looking pretty rough and 45 minutes later, they look brand new.

It's the little things, I guess.
