Broke out of hibernation for the first "swell up the gaskets and mitigate the oil leaks" therapy of 2021. Day trip to Arches National Park just over the border in UT. Despite all the sunshine it was a little too windy and chilly to pop the top.Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentClick to view attachment

Finally broke the right side axle nut loose! Pulled axles, and started CV inspection. One boot was previously replaced with wrong type. Measure up the new axles for 4 lug outers and Subie 5mt inners is the project on deck. Click to view attachment

Started fitting the rocker panels on the 75. What a PIA with the back and fourth, on and off, drilling holes, etc..... but, they are about 85% now. Waiting for the spacers that fit on the ends, which arrive tomorrow, and then we'll wrap them up. @Mikey914 thanks for the tip of the allen head screws there. Much easier then the screw driver would have been. Thanks @rgalla9146 for pointing out what they were!

Drove it for the first time in 5 months.
Back in the fall I discovered leaking fuel line so parked for a bit. Replaced fuel line in December and then the fuel pump quit The past few days have been unseasonably warm (and rainy) but was mid-70s and the rain had stopped. So... swapped out the fuel pump and filter then took a short drive around the "country" block. Man, I love this car!

Keeping on with learning to weld...
Had to put the engine tin aside. Waiting on some tools to arrive to help with fixturing. So, today was door brace day. A very different kind of welding.
The lower turnbuckles are ready just ran out of light. It was quite a lesson today.
Any feedback on the welding would be appreciated. I think the spot welds are strong enough. I did test with a hammer and nothing fell off. Not shown but I did hit everything with some primer to cover up the bare steel.

Thank you! That's my dad and we're having a lot of fun with the restoration and putting it back together. The only thing we haven't done is the actual paint job, all the bodywork and prep was done in the garage. It's going to get a white interior.

I now have operational gauges in the 914. These are Speedhut gauges with a GPS speedometer.
The gray sheetmetal just lays on top of the stock gauge mount. I did have to turn the lock nuts down on my lathe to fit into the openings for the the 2 smaller gauges.
Yes, I know I have the wrong screws in there. That will be fixed when I find the originals someplace in my messy garage.
Drove it thru some nice back country hills and curves....man this this just wants to spin the tires once I shift into 2nd gear...having a blast for sure. I adjusted the idle down to 650-700rpm and the wife commented how the 914 is almost quieter than her car, that is until I open it up.
I need a resonator or better muffler, the wife and kids can hear me from inside the house a block away when I get on it.

It was sunny and 70. Plus my day off. What do you think I did?
Went for a drive. Stopped for a photo. Burned half a tank of gas.

Took the car to the local Cars 'n Coffee event this morning. Had about 40 nice hot rod cars that showed up. Great weather.
I walked back over to my car to find 2 guys giving it the serious eyeball. As I walked up to my car they asked if it was mine. I said, "Yes, it is." Then the guys voice started to sound familiar and I realized the guy was Steve Moal of Moal Coachbuilders in Oakland. He is a 3rd generation Coach builder. If you ever caught the episode of Chasing Classic Cars with Wayne Carini, where Wayne has a complete hand-made hot rod built, (the "Moal Speedway") Steve Moal is the man who built that car for Wayne. I absolutely loved that car.
Anyway, Steve told me, "This is a beautifully done car. The best example I have ever seen. They don't get any better than this." Then we talked about cars in general. He is a great guy and I have admired his work for a long time. I was truly grateful that he looked at my car and thought so highly of it. He noticed all of the details we had done to it. This is the highest compliment the car could get in my opinion. @Banananose914@914350 and @Socalandy and Bob can all be proud of their work.
Here is a picture of Wayne Carini's car, built by Steve Moal Coachbuilders in Oakland, CA:
G e o r g e stopped by to pick up his trailer and while here, took a quick peek at HOWARD's injuries from my accident back in December. I'll need to take it over to Kent's shop @914350 to get an assessment sometime in the future
Drove it...went to a local Clutches & Coffee car show. I was the only 914, both other Porsches there are also water cooled, a 944 and 997.

Got an order of parts from the best vendors ever, 914Rubber Odd ball parts to keep pushing the cars details to 10/10. I think I might have popped the seal on my rear window (plexi because of cage) so I ordered a new one (old one had scratches) as well as the butyl and also all the stuff to pull my door panels (new door plugs, vapor barriers etc) so I can lube up the door latching mechanisms as well as pull the lock tumblers out so I can get the passenger door, F/R trunks keyed out finally so everything matches. Cooling flaps because mine are missing and they're 'cool'
Got the engine bay door to open without sticking. Finished cleaning up the wiring mess in the trunk. Installed a second license plate light. All the rear lights work now.

Stopped by a local Porsche shop on Friday and made an offered for 50mm PMO carburetors. Owner wants to sell the MSD ignition too. Does anybody have experience with this ignition system.? I do not have an ignition system for this motor build.
Looks like you're working on it more. That gas tank looks familiar.

I polished up the back window with Cerium Oxide this weekend. Cleaned it up very nice. There a couple of scratches in the glass that it reduced as well. Wanted to test it on a flat piece before we did the inside of the windshield. The glass looks almost new. I didn't get a picture of it because I wrapped it up and put it away before I thought to do so but, I'm not dissapointed in the least. 45+ years of wear and you couldn't tell now.

His name is Jeremy and he operates via Dent Pro. His number is 704-426-7279. He did a wonderful job on the Cayenne a few years back and I always kept his info. He corrected around 12 minor dings around the 914 (some of which i couldn't see till he pointed them out) and he threw in the single ding on the Pano for nothing. I think his rate is pretty normal at $125- $150 a panel. He showed me a polished aluminum body cobra he corrected. Crazy!

Thanks Bill!! My Maserati was the victim of some stuff falling off the shelf onto the front hood, the car was literally dent and scratch free before that, the only good thing was that the 914 was not parked in that spot. i will have to give him a call, thanks for the information.
