I got new tires and wheels for the Cayman. piratenanner.gif
So how do I get the take-offs home since they won't fit in any of my trunks or frunks and I no longer have a tow vehicle? idea.gif

Easy. biggrin.gif Just strap them to my Mobile Tire Rack / Roll Cage. icon22_2.gif

John, that reminds me of how to transport auto-X wheels and tires in a Fiat X1/9.

I was thinking about how to transport AX tires in a 914. Take an old targa top, and put two long all thread bolts in it sticking up. Reenforce the attachment points on the top with big metal plates. Slip the lug holes of the wheels over the bolts, and put a nut on, then a second tire on top of that one.

Drive to the AX, remove that top, and put the good one on from the trunk. Then swap the tires.

Working with the Youtube from PMB, I disassembled the rear calipers. Straightforward and thanks to PMB for documenting. Next step, get the rebuild kit and go to town.

Stopped by the Mechanic's yesterday. They got the engine in the car, it's all wired up, I got to listen to it run and watch them drive it around their yard.
It sounds SO GOOD!
The motor has a mild racing cam in it, (I don't remember the specs on it right now, have to dig up the paperwork) and the Triad exhaust just tops it off. Thanks @triaddave for the awesome sound there.
I'll post a video of it this week. I don't know why I didn't take one while I was there but, I was so caught up in the moment that I didn't even think of it.
The mechanics that are working on it LOVED the Tangerine Racing Throttle and Shift Linkage kits as well. They were stoked to work with such high quality parts. Thanks for that @chrisfoley . These guys are old timers and it's fun to actually impress them with something new sometimes.
They're bleeding the brakes and wiring up the lights and we'll take it for a spin around the block
I was borderline giddy when I left there yesterday!

I have custom made covers for the lift. Off course in wintertime an outdoor lift somehow sucks. But otherwise it is great for rustproofing, washing and all sorts of "dirty" work. No mess on the garage floor. dry.gif

Yesterday drove almost an hour (loved every minute) to let a friend who is both an expert on VW engines and 914 guy judge my tuning job, engine performance and idle and came home with a big grin with his overall A grade.

Put almost 1,500 miles on my 914 in last 6 weeks just cause it's so much fun to drive.

But starter has been failing to engage when real hot - and it's been real hot - so I put in a new starter last night. 20 min. job if you know about upper bolt with nut in engine bay. Happy to have new starter in this heat.

Had new tires put on Mahles and had the Mahles put on the car for the first time today:

IPB Image

Really bad news is on starting the 914 at the tire dealer to come home, the engine began making horrible scraping/rattling noises on the left bank like something let loose inside - broken ring? lifter? I didn't think I'd make it the 11 miles home, but I did. I was sure engine would lock up or blow.

Strange part is there was no effect on engine performance at all.

So no time for nice pics of my 914 with the Mahle's - will dig into what's wrong tomorrow.

Sick. Car was just peaked and running perfectly. Was looking forward to enjoying it the rest of summer.

But looking like a rebuild is ahead - top-end at a minimum........

Wait til you guys get old.

I had left a wrench in the engine bay several weeks ago. It had fallen down into the fan area - who knows when? Saturday it began hitting the fan and raising holy hell.

Found it with scope, easily reached in with hand and pulled it out.

There are the dumb. There are idiots. There are fools. They have yet to find a category for me. biggrin.gif

Looks like no damage to fan so far. Took car for 25 mile spin in country roads last night and all is well. piratenanner.gif

Don’t feel badly. I changed out the pressure regulator in a parking lot one evening when returning from RRC 2011. I left the old on sitting in the engine bay and when I exited the 15 in Temecula it slid forward, landing in the fan and sheared one blade. I thought I had blown the engine as it was vibrating and had made a noise upon impact. headbang.gif

Wheel spacers came from USWheeladapters.com Phone 877-823-2787 and you might ask for Doug since he's now more familiar with 914 specs. I did need to drill out the spacer lug holes which were too small. Hub diameter opening is 3 1/8" and must be hub centric. poke.gif

I would need a bridge to get my out of the garage. I was hoping to have a new driveway poured this week between the garage and alley, right now all I have is a mud puddle.

It seems like the more work I do on the garage the more it rains. It already flooded once. If I was to replace the roof the we might see the Salt River overflow its banks.

My 4 year old Grandson loves riding in a 914- he was not happy when Opa moved the car from IA to AZ, but now he gets to ride in it (and others) when he visits.
He inherited the car gene as it is rather dominant in our family... and hopefully when he gets to driving age he'll still be able to get gas for it...

WONDERFUL! Good news - you'll never put it away again! Your 914 is BEAUTIFUL!

BTW, not to be picky, but the word is "Concours", not "Concourse". As it is French, the s on the end is silent, it's pronounced Concour.

And it has nothing to do with a concourse. It means "competition".

So many in the car community do not know this.

Please forgive me for being so picky - but I'm one of those anal retentive/engineer types.
