Went for a drive and trying to figure out why under heavy acceleration and turning the back end 'floats' a bit, it actually is a bit scary. checked alignment and rear right tire is towed out 1/16" not sure if that's enough to do it. I think I will pull off the rear trailing arms and install new bushings then re-align.

Clutch cable seems to be going out too dry.gif

Mine does a skip thing, but I think that has something to do with the rear sway bar.

Buddy of mine with a 996 he recently replaced rear arms on asked me to check out why it was skipping or wiggling around corners.

Took it out and around 30mph could feel the toe-in. Pulled back onto a gravel road, yup, chewing up gravel and inside of tires already wearing.

Maybe just an alignment?

Installed new vertical Targa seals from 914rubber, making almost all my cabin seals new........yay!

For those who don't know, use rubber lubricant to make installing seals very easy - same stuff the tire guys use on tires when putting them on rims.....every shop needs to have it around......IMHO........

Sounds much better now. Nice deep growl. The new to me used fancy exhaust cost me a case of beer but it was worth it.

On a side note, did these ever have an electric trunk pop? I noticed mine has a mechanism in there for it (disconnected). I like the pig tail but it kinda looks silly.

They never had an electric trunk pop, but I think Automobile Atlanta used to sell a rear trunk release solenoid kit. I had one at one time, but either sold it or gave it away. Never used it.

Just read that the 1976 914's are "relatively rare" and only 4,200 of them were made.

This made my day. That's like #100 on a list of great things I've discovered about my '76 since pulling it out of a barn 4 years ago having no idea what I was getting - other than it had little rust.....as George says, "no 914 has no rust...."

(Some other examples: Car is from LA, has 911 master cylinder, new rack & pinion, 320i front brake calipers, body is incredibly tight & solid, and too many other good details to list - a "dream" barn find.....)

How many other '76 914s are here?

Really nice Rich. Thank you.

Tempted to get one, but anderssj gave me one that's almost perfect - tiny well-repaired split in center above tach where you usually can't see it, rest is like new.

Next question is - how long did it take you to remove the old and install the new? Did I read 6+ hours somewhere?

'76 914's are left over '75 inventory. When I first acquired mine George Hussey told me (no I did not buy it from him) that those were the best of the 914 models. That kind of went over my head at the time as I kept reading about Big Ugly Bumpers, low HP numbers, heavy doors, highly desirable '73 models, etc, etc. It didn't help matters that I was bitten with the HP Bug and went that direction with the next 2 914's. But when changing the ign switch on the '76 I began to appreciate, if not admire, what a nice and unmolested car this is. I'm glad that I didn't rape this one as it has it's own unique set of values. The rubber is still in great shape, no cracks in the dash, top or a pillars. Windows meet the roof nicely and it can go thru a car wash. I'll be going thru this one again to bring her back to her glory days later this year or early next year. I need to patch a few holes in the Hell Hole and replace a section of channel in the frunk. Other than that I look forward to driving this car on the hi way again as she is quiet, comfortable and feels new. Having a '70, '73 & '76 in my herd I'm now inclined to agree with George.
Gatornapper
Yes, yes, and yes! Ditto here - had I had no idea what I was getting and no idea what a 914 was. Feel the same way about mine. Mine was made in 10/75.

I also understand that the '76's have the 2.0's that were the most advanced version with the best engine casing, stronger than earlier ones.

But have read differing opinions on D-Jet vs. L-Jet....not a concern to me now as I'm running Webers. But I have fully functioning '76 D-Jet system I'm planning to try next winter. I need 1st hand experience comparing my great Webers with the D-Jet to decide for myself, my driving, which is best.

I love having my car-nut friends drive my '76. Only former 914 owners know what to expect, and all others are quite surprised by handling, power, ride, and comfort. Hard to believe a '70's car - really late '60's design - can combine all of these so well.

Finally got around to switching out the gas tank and installing the stainless steel lines into the '74.
I've been driving the car without a care in the world and without any issues and loving every moment of it but, when we pulled the tank out of the car yesterday, the fuel lines underneath the tank basically tore and pulled apart with zero effort on our part. We we're literally just pulling the tank out of the car.
Needless to say, I'm glad I got to it now, before it became a real problem.
While we have everything out, we're going to replace the sending unit and all the other things that should be done at this time as well.

BUMMER! Just read this in George's Tech Tips 700 on p. 5 right at his intro to the 4 engine:

IPB Image

Mine has always run warm even after I thoroughly cleaned all the fins, air passages, oil cooler, etc. when I had the engine out earlier this year - but it is cooler than it was before I cleaned everything. Car had 60,600 original (verified) miles on it when I got it, 65k now, engine never opened.

If I am running for over 40 - 50 min. on interstate at 65 - 70mph in ambient temps above 90 deg. F, the temp needle is close to the 3/4 mark....but never more. Wondering if this is in the "too hot" category? Thinking of installing 2nd oil cooler with fan this winter. Would love to keep oil in the 200 deg. F range.........

But another 914 guy who is an expert mechanic and VW Beetle builder said the temp was fine when he drove it.

Other '76 owners - how many of you deal with hot engines?

GN

PS: I have new thermostat from Tangerine.....

They all run close to the red mark. The gauge on the earlier models really spooked drivers. Thats why Porsche changed them later. You can always install some aftermarket digital gauge and sender to verify.
emerygt350
How could the block affect temperature like that? Not doubting that it does but just want to understand how.

The dash pad looks really good. Someday I will have to tackle that.

Today, I sandblasted the surface rust in the trunk. I lifted the pad at the last race and was shocked to see it. Not going to let that get started. Need to go get the paint matched in the trunk for a rattle can but at least I got the rust out and some primer down.

Gatornapper
Thanks - that is a bit encouraging. Mine never gets close to the red, about 1/4 of the way from it. Is that good?

Wondering how I could add an accurate digital oil temp gauge without removing the existing oil temp sending unit? Don't want to remove original sending unit. Any place I could put a sending unit for a digital gauge?

You can buy oil plug senders. I have used them before and it works very well and is quite responsive to temp changes in the engine. I can dig up the link if you are interested. Just replaces your oil drain plug.
Gatornapper
Yes! Please send me that link! Once I know what the actual oil temps are, I can make a decision on adding an oil cooler.

Getting ready for today's C&C, I pressure washed the engine and engine bay as they were covered in dirt & dust from our 1/2 mile gravel road.

Not surprised that engine would not start right afterwards, so left it out last night to dry out.

Bummer. Still wouldn't start at 7am this morning - yes, checked all ignition wiring and all seems well.

She was so pretty, all washed inside and out, ready to show off. All dressed up & nowhere to go.

Gonna go out & try again now.........

Well, now that I have new rotors and rebuilt calipers installed, I WAS going to finish bleeding the brake lines. That was until I discovered the new stainless steel lines I installed (only 2 fortunately) are leaking at both ends no matter how tight I made the fittings. Anyone else have problems with stainless lines?
The old/still usable lines and one new OE steel line snugged up fine and no leaks.
