Pulled the instruments to get at the speedo cable. It recently started making terrible noises (behind the dash) and bouncing all over the place. Lubed it with triflow and spun the cable with a drill to try to get it down into the tube. Will see if the banshee is silenced this weekend. If not, time for a new cable.

Also looked over the illumination wiring on all the units as not all lights are working. Planning to upgrade to LEDs but need to figure out why the current turn signal, high beams, etc. lights are not working. Gave myself a headache studying the current flow diagram but have some ideas on how to proceed.

Weather here spectacular so took both for a ride. Awaiting the shift adjuster from Chris (Tangerine) as after much struggling, still only getting 1st thru 3rd on the '71... and yes, I've read all the threads on linkage, and have had no issues on the '73.

Nothing like a 914 with the top off when it's in the 60's!!!

Thanks to my friend Adrian Gang, was referred to a shop that has a Celette Bench and has access to 914 fixtures up in Van Nuys, CA.

Now, need to rent a U-Haul trailer and transport HOWARD up there for an evaluation & estimate to repair the damage incurred last December ... my V-nose is currently is in AZ dry.gif

Now that that weather is in the 80's and 90's I have been driving every chance I get. Along the way discovering things like I forgot that I never actually finished bolting the dash in. Let us just say I had a few rattles.
Phoenix streets though are almost perfect grid, driving 914 in a straight line is just wrong.
However a few miles south of downtown is South Mountain park 5.5 miles of 15 mph curves. I tried my best to behave.

Rejetted my single Weber 32 36 and adjusted the float. Ran it this afternoon and it was so much more confident and smooth in acceleration. Also stared with first crank after one accelerator push to the floor. Plugs (which were reading lean) are getting a bit of brown to them. May need to move up one more jet size.

Drove to yesterday's C&C parking next to Rick's FiberFab replica 356 he's got looking great. It was the only 914 there out of about 300 cars; then drove to friend's Pop's Farm Pig Roast near Cartersville, VA, but ignition strangely cut out on me for an hour on the way - finally it just came back. Tested everything with VOM I carry in car and nothing was wrong - but car wouldn't run. Then it did - and fine! Been fine ever since. MSD not connected, Pertronix ignitor working fine.

Today drove girlfriend/wife to granddaughter's 9th B-Day party at son's house, & back afterwards with no problems. 914 is my daily driver now.

finally made it to C&C saturday, took a couple of pictures after, only 3 porsche on site maybe due to several other things going on in the state, and in Savannah this weekend, but still good to get out snd get some miles on it, and do some fine tuning on the MPS.
getting idle close to where it should be with the AF showing improved numbers , i think stil a bit lean on something in between part load and full load. cruising ans idle af is great, but on a sustained gradual acceleration around 3500-4500rpm it seems a bit lean bouncing around 13.5 to just over 14. any suggestions? 2056, d-jet, - thats not considers part load, is it so maybe just adjusting full load slightly richer.. anyway a couple pictures-

It's a simple thing but, I finally got two key chains. One for the 74 and one for the 75. It should have been a 50/50 chance every time I picked a key but, it never seemed to work out that way for me.

Spent some time today tweaking the idle mix screws on my Weber IDF-44's - thought I had them pretty well dialed in, but I did improve things a bit more - and my new settings have the engine running better than ever in all conditions.

its nice to enjoy the 914 and drive them and they love the weather we are having now too, finally nice and cool and not humid here. I have been told those 44IDF carbs are the way to go on a 2056, but i feel like i am getting the d-jet dialed in and close to where it needs to be. I had no idea how tired my original motor was. Hope you and i can both make it to Okeenerfest next year. - ps thanks for loaning me the ECU, i will get that sent back asap, but i have a feeling that since you have those weber's singing you wont be using it.

Just drove mine around the block. RickB45 & I were out looking at a 944 today.

Mine's never run better. That little 2.0 L is almost 3x more powerful than I ever dreamed it would be. Has all the power I need for FUN....no other mods necessary.

Sway bars? Yeah. Need sway bars. Hopefully this winter. But probably only front.

Slowing working my way through stripping the car from New Orleans. Thinking someone might have forgot to mention it might have gone for a swim on the street at some point. Lots of Black Mold. Engine and trans came out first, then the front and interior. Working on getting the rear suspension out next.

I painted up and installed these black arm things with a rubber strip on the end of them. I have no idea what they are used for. My wife seems to think they are required and she did point out all the other cars have them. So I put them back on.

Installed LEDs for dash illumination. Looks great!

Figured with that done I would start to figure out why my turn signal indicator lamp (on the dash) does not flash. Had read that not flashing was an indicator that one of the bulbs was out. So started with the bulbs and realized someone had swapped the driving light and blinker wires in the RT front driving light unit.

That means the higher wattage bulb has been running when the parking lights were on. Digging a bit deeper, the wire was completely melted with bare copper showing through. My assumption is that the higher current draw turn signal filament was just pulling too many amps for that wire and it overheated.

Started to trace it to see if I could get to a “good” section where I could splice but, tracing across the front of the car, it’s pretty clear the whole thing is melted. I imagine the only reason there was not a short is that the wire is buried (melted) in with the other wires in the harness.

So the plan is to stop tracing and run a replacement wire from the fuse block (it looks like that is where is comes from in the wiring diagrams) and somehow pull it through. I may need to get creative about how I get from the block to the bulb until some time when I have the fuel tank out and can run it with the rest of the wires in that harness.

The turn signal indicator is still not flashing …

Never a dull moment!

Pulled the new wire this evening. The old one was melted all the way to the fuse block. Even fished the new one behind the fuel tank so it runs with the harness all the way. Parking lights and turn signal/ hazard lights working perfectly!

35+ years after the PO cut the wire behind the fuse panel I fixed the door buzzer on my `71. Found out only now that the US 914´s had a 4-pole door switch. 2 for the interior light, two for the buzzer. Sounds so ugly, I love it. Bzzzzzz… biggrin.gif

DUH!!!! Come on guys you should know this already.

They are for wiping the dust off the windshield after a dust storm.

On Friday. I picked up the 914 from the GCU parking garage and ran it through emissions testing It passed loaded HC's at 500 out of 500. Perfect score!! blink.gif
I found out you can ask the emissions testers for a one year or a two year cert on your test. If you don't ask, they will only give you a one year and they will NEVER tell you about the two year unless you ask for it(I wonder why that i$).

Hi Mike. Funny that … my fog lights have not worked since I bought the car. I had that down as a winter project. Is this one of those cases where the current through or resistance of an LED is too low to allow high beams to turn on? I understood that fogs are designed only work when the low beams are on. And the indicator bulb was dead before installing the LED so maybe that was/is the issue?? Hmmm.

WTF.
People please know that if you have black paint on your 4 lug fuchs, you are dumb. It devalues them so hard! The fake fuchers rejoice.

Rant over. Get a clue.

If you are new, take note. If you have painted 4lug fuchs, fix it. The real ones are never painted. Paint is a flag that screams fake. Don't do that to yours.
