Felt bad for all my old friends back in the midwest buried in snow so took the '73 out for a drive after putting on new tires. The old tires were at least 20 years old and drove like bricks...

Yes, 16X6, off the front of G body 911. Perfect for 914 with upgraded hubs. 205/50/16 tires of which there are great choices.

Nice! You'll love the delayed wipers. My 914 has them and around here with light drizzle so much of the time, delay gets used a lot.
New wheel hub caps today. (While I define which wheels to buy)

!@#$@#!$ changed the !#$!@#$ accelerator cable on my 6. PITA. Under the car, in the car, under the car, in the car, contort, contort, contort, remove console, carpet, open little hatches, contort, get ahold of cable, contort, fish it out.
Installation is reverse of removal. RIGHT. Cable doesnt want to go in easily; once in, contort, cut fingers on sheet metal, contort more, in car, under car, in car under car....
I really disliked this job, but the old cable was broken in back and frayed up front. Was a matter of time.
Thanks for listening...

I feel for you. I used to be able to crawl under the dash and get into the pedal box area without thinking about it. Now I dread having to get down there for anything. Then I hurt for a couple days afterwards.

Pulled the drivetrain out of the Six for degreasing and maintenance work.
Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentThe engine is covered in de-greaser in the pictures. I finished cleaning it last night. I cleaned the heat exchangers too.
I am going to do the timing cover gaskets, adjust the valves, replace the plugs, fuel filter, air filter, and the fan belt. I do the fan belt every time the motor comes out. It is much easier to do it when the engine is on the ground, and fan belts are cheap.
I found that is is easier to remove the motor for stuff like this rather than fight the limited space in the engine compartment.
I also found that we have a split CV boot on the right inboard joint. So that will get fixed as well.

get some 20x30 prints of those pics and put them in your office/man cave/living room. That is one nice looking 914!!
btw: my 914 has full tread 30 year old Michelin XZX's on it. These were the tire to have 30 years ago. It's a shame the car never ran any miles on them...I will be replacing once the rebuild is a little further along.

@burton73 i have that same set and they do fit and look great,
@SKL1 those with that car are stunning! I am running 205/55's(16) did you find the slightly shorter 50's have the speedo off just a bit(more revolutions, so reading slighty faster that actual speed? would help increase RPM then as well. anyway also curious what brand tires .

Phil- I think the 205/50/16 are pretty close to the rolling diameter of 165/15's it came with (WAY back when) so the speedo shouldn't be that far off. Must admit I really don't worry about it...
I'm sure Tire Rack or Discount Tire websites have a chart that shows that. I'm just too lazy to look it up!

Catching up on a few smaller projects.
My 914 came with all mismatched keys, but the steering column was converted to an MK1. PO said this allowed easier installation of delay wipers and elect squirters. I liked this so I painstakingly converted the doors, rear trunk and glove box to use the MK1 key. All actually work very well (still have to do the front trunk lock).
This means.....I have an actual accessory wire. Today was digging around until I found it and I did! Yay! Now I can just stick the key in (don't rotate) and the radio will work.
Also installed the driving light switch.
Yuck, it's actually clean once I get the looms wire tied back up.

@SKL1 just FYI i did go back and look that up and here are some numbers if anyone cares:
original size of 155 HR (80) 15 is 24.8"
165 /80 15 is 25.4"
for comparison, a 205/55 16 will be 24.9"
a 205/50 16 will be 24.1"
so fyi your speedo will be reading a bit faster than your actual speed by a few mph.

.The 32/36 is the carb that was on the car when I bought it. Spent time last year jetting it as best as I could but realize it's not a permanent/ideal solution.
An upgrade (dual Weber 40s?) is on the list but not for this year. This year I am cleaning out the mouse nests on top of the cylinders and oil cool. A man has got to prioritize!

As I've previously posted, I bought a super light weight GT Lid from Sergio. I had him leave it partially unfinished, as he made one for me without hinges, mounting hardware etc. I had already made some changes and mocked it up, but then I decided to take it apart and powder coat it matte black. I got them back from powder yesterday, and reassembled today. Then I drove it....beautiful day here in Georgia!

@flipb @mb911 You're going to enjoy it! I've had mine on the car about 18 months now, and last local car cruise in i went to that was the #1 comment was the amazing sound, no one could believe it wasnt a six or 8! of course to add to the sound issue i have a custom cam, it fools a lot of people. You will feel a difference too. Mine is a 2.1 now and with a larger throttle body and that exhaust the performance improvement is amazing!. Now i am considering saving up for doing a custom injection with independent throttle bodies almost like the /6 projects out there a few are doing. enjoy!!
