We spent yesterday working on my car. We finally, it appears, have resolved the passenger axle seal leak that would leave a quarter-sized drip under my car when parked. Replaced the seal (again) only with a slightly different seal, and this morning not a drop under my car. Yay!!!!

We ended up dropping the rear of the car 1 Bilstein shock spring cup clip in height as it was just about 1/2" too high. Now it sits pretty with a slight rake, the front being maybe 5/8" lower than the rear. That's the way I think they look the best. I want to drive it some more today and really look at it to be sure we are at our final height adjustment. Then I will call the alignment shop to make an appointment to be sure everything is right.

We removed the rear valance and bumper as one of my valance attachment points on the body would not hold a screw to secure the valance and my valance was also about 1/4" off being straight. We installed riv-nuts in the 4 holes and used some black allen head screws that look nice and virtually disappear. The other screws were gold cad-plated Phillips screws. Now the valance is true across the width and looks much better.

We also, (finally) installed the snorkel on my stock 3.2 air cleaner. I have been wanting to do that for a bit. The air cleaner is now 100% stock 3.2 and appears to quiet the engine down a tiny bit too- of course, that could just be my imagination.

Also adjusted both doors as they were proud of the quarter panel when shut by maybe an 1/16". Now they are flush and still close nicely.

All in, a great day of fun and friendship.

Oh, the guy with the ponytail is HB. HB owns 2 914's- and is currently gathering parts to convert one of them to a 3.2 with Webers.....We hope to be picking the engine up from the machine shop within the next 30 days. Then the fun begins.

We did the work at Greg T.'s home in Tracy. Actually, he did the work and I was his assistant. Greg has the Willow Green flared 914 with a 3.2SS motored beautiful car that took 2nd at Werks Reunion this past year.

Oh- though the picture of the side profile makes it look like the rear wheel is showing positive camber, it actually is not. Weird.

Thanks for looking everyone,
Michael beerchug.gif

I am experiencing a stumble upon cold start. Sounds like it is running on 4 cylinders and then clears up, like a fuel issue. Once warmed up she runs perfect. So I started trying to chase that issue down. So far, everything is looking fine..... ('87 3.2 with Motronic injection) BTW, love my Mom's Service Cover- we always use it.

Put the motor back in the big six yesterday. Got everything but the oil coolers and the mufflers back on underneath.

Today I will clean the nasty oil coolers, and reinstall them and the mufflers. Then I am going to reinstall the fuel injection and get it back up and running.

I stopped by our local powder coater, Advanced Performance Coatings in Auburn on Shale Ridge Lane to drop off a non-car project for coating and the first thing I saw when I parked was a set of chrome bumpers, F&R for a 914! The front had the tit holes welded up and the rear was a later rear (late '71 through '73) with no tit holes. They said they were going to sandblast them for the owner.

Nice to see another 914 in the area. beerchug.gif

Took a little trip to Ollie's in Lake Havasu to pick up engine parts for my '71 conversion. I've had the car since new and put on all OEM 914-6 suspension and brakes, etc back in the early '70's but am finally getting around to the engine conversion with my son...

2.4 T engine my son found back in IA a couple years ago- Ollie's did the heads, crank and case. Now we need to figure out what P/C combo and cams we want.Click to view attachment Click to view attachment

I have been working on the dash which is held in place by the mirrors. Well while attempting to remove one I broke it. So l ordered another pair. So now that I'll have 3 on hand I can mount one in the center of the dash. After doing some research for the location I had figured out the pedestal needed to be about 3.5 inches tall. So I got all the pieces cut out and all I need now is hardware.

Lol I say this after being 99% complete for 4 years smile.gif. Took her out this morning and it ran perfectly, even had the BT adapter playing great music thru the stock system.

I know it sounds strange, but everything is done and works as it should…

That said, I could use some plaid door panels smile.gif

Installed the headlight/combi/latching relay I repaired the other day.

Then, WHILE I WAS IN THERE, I decided to install the fog light flasher module I bought from JWest Engineering back in 2004 (!).

I had modified the car some years back so I could use the foglights as DRLs--but the white part of Jerome's/Spokework's Front Euro Turn Signal boards are bright enough to take over that role:

That said, I thought it would be good to be able to use the foglights as supplemental DRLs, or to flash them for additional "emphasis."

Installation of the JWest kit was straight forward--once I got the car's wiring back to original/factory configuration. Now the foglights can now be turned on without the headlights; they can also be flashed by pulling and releasing the turn signal lever when the headlight and foglight switches are "off." With those switches "on," everything works per factory intent (foglights on with low-beams, off with high beams).

I love it when a plan comes together.

Doing some stuff under the dash, I can't help but think that I'll be here for days. Really shouldn't be that long but I hate to disappoint anyone.

I'm going to try to have the car running by 50,000 viewers, so I can post some pictures of her on her feet.

i just wanted to start a thread to see what you guys do day to day on your cars.

i'll start,

about a month ago, i pulled my engine and trans to put in a new clutch. had the flywheel lightened and resurfaced. but what i didnt know is that i had to shim the little ball that the clutch arm rides on, after a resurfacing. so guess what i did today?

yup, pulled the trans and put an extra washer under the ball. you have to goop up both washers to get it to seal because the threaded hole goes all the way thru to the inside of the trans. i also replaced the plastic cup that the ball rides in. the throwout bearing and its little plastic blocks were fine so i buttoned every thing back up. 5 hours total. i think this has been the cheapest repair yet on my car. $2.75 for the little plastic cup.

what did you do to your 914 today?
So I’m in the last stages of a 16 yr journey of saving a very rusty 74 914. Yesterday I wrestled the 2 liter motor and transaxle into place, a very tight fit and very trying experience but is now bolted in place none the less. Today brought an unexpected frustration in the form of the Speedo cable nut on the transaxle end . Apparently I ordered a new one some months back and didn’t check the fit to my right angle drive much to my surprise the threads on the cable nut are left hand thread!!! The right angle drive is of course right hand threaded. Have you or anyone you know ever experienced this problem? Just curious. I am certain I ordered one for a 914 .
