Drove it!

Still driving the 914 so little I mark each time on the calendar. If it gets more than two weeks, I try to make time (18 days since last drive).

Doesn't help it's just been pissing rain last few weeks.

Today, for about 4-5 hours, the sun came out.

Dropped the BB's motor. I will be doing a bunch of stuff. The front suspension is off for a refresh. Engine will get a good inspection for a few oil leaks. A new Bowlsby harness set, inspect injectors, new fuel and vacuum lines, valve adjust, new tps, new Tangerine SS tunnel lines, the list goes on.....

Thankful for 914rubber, AA, Tangerine, Jeff Bowlsby Paragon, Aase, PMB, Bruce Stone, 914werke and others for helping us keep these cars on the road!

Shifter bushings-

Lately having a hard time getting first and reverse gears. Shifter bushing completely disintegrated. I can’t believe I was still able to drive the car without the bushings.
Reminds me of the time I drove the 914 with a broken clutch cable.
Oh, then there was a time I drove the 914 with a broken throttle cable too.

I’ve had my 1972, 914 since 1987.

boy both cars are stunning!! man, michael, that car is really looking so awesome!!!! i know you get it out a lot, so that paint still look slike brand new that tells you what an awesome job they did on it!!! I will probably need to repaint and this time get it done better its just so easy to chip, that i know they didint get it to bond correctly, which is dissapointing since i speint about $8000 onthat portion of the job only 4 years ago.
-Bucci, i had that happen to me a couple years ago, bushing fell apart, i lost all but 2 gears, now i have the brass bushing in that coupler, not going to ever have to replace that again!!

Thanks @DRPHIL914 . I do like to drive my car; today will be about 225 miles.

I had my shift coupler fail at the shifter connection. We made a bronze bushing and that should last for the next 50 years. beerchug.gif

there are brass bushings available on line for anyone wanting to use these, i used the one on sale on ebay i forget who the seller is, and i got the trans console brass bushing from 914WERKE. I will eventually convert the trans console to Chris Foley's upgrade but have been having to spend $$ other places, but i think that will be my last improvment other than maybe a short shift kit to go with it!

enjoy Luft!! i wish i could go. take LOTS of pictures please!

Looks amazing as always! I recently spent the time to ceramic coat my 996 and was surprised by the results. Not sure how long it will last…

The key was in prep.
1. Wash
2. Claybar
3. Medium polish (depending on swirls…) .. used Wolfgang swirl remover
4. Clean car with erase all (car pro)
5. Apply ceramic coating as per instructions.
6. Apply second coat.

Also have some car wash that helps the ceramic last longer.

Was plagued all weekend at Route 66 with an intermittent miss. Thought it was spark plug wires too close to MPS, causing strange signals to the brain. Discovered today that one spark plug wire had a wear spot that allowed shielding to short to ground. Moved the wire to a better position where contact is impossible and it ran as smooth as silk. Drove it 30 miles to test & celebrate.

I bought a pair of Chris Foley's ( @ChrisFoley ) front tie-downs for my car; these are nice and heavy duty. I coated them satin black and they are now installed. Now I have front and rear tie-downs should the need arise. It's a 914, so...

Installed a rebuilt pedal cluster from Bruce Stone, what a fantastic improvement that was. Also got close and personal with parts of my car I had not explored (under the steering rack cover).

Installed a track legal fire extinguisher as well. Getting ready for a pca hpde event at Watkins Glen international speedway.

My old roll cage was great in the 80's. Now I'm old/older and need to sit closer to the wheel. So, had to move the top roll bar 7 inch to the front so I don't lose my head street driving. New bent tubing, coping, prime, paint. Now to replace windshield . Best, MarkClick to view attachment

@DRPHIL914

Thanks for the shout out and compliment on my car..! I’ve made and tried various bronze oillite bushings at the shifter console on the transmission. I prefer the forgiveness of the plastic bushings as I was causing a bind because the shifter rod seem to be too tight.

And for reference, almost 25 years ago I paid $6000 for my paint job. About $3000 more than I wanted to spend back then. One of the key components is letting the primer cure adequately and sanding. Sanding scratches can be minimal using the correct sand paper grades.!

i think that might have been the issue because the paint itself is beautiful, it’s even ,
the metallic was layed down evenly so it’s just that it didn’t bind well the the primer so i figured it was not prepped well or something for it to chip so easily.

Found one of the transmission mount ears (on the car) was not connected when removing the engine over winter. Welded it back on today. Did two passes in the groove between the part and curve of the frame member. The second bead is ugggly ... but the penetration looks good.

I got some advice on this forum regarding welding on cars. Get the parts really clean and practice. A thorough cleaning made the resulting welds are much better ... but I still need more practice.

Found out the replacement upper valve covers we put on Elwood are warped. The reason we replaced them was the paint on them was ugly. So today I took the original valve covers and stripped them with aircraft stripper.

We also went to a car show in Keller, TX. My nephew's wife had her DeLorean in the show. While we were there, we found this:

Installing visors…. Bought some from 914Rubber and Bamboli. Mark’s visors arrived in five days, while the other took two months and were wrong although the package had the right part # (with mirror). Bamboli sent a new pair that arrived in four days and we sent the other back with a return label.

Although the Bamboli brand was cheaper and came with mounting hardware the quality is ok, but 914Rubber is much closer to original. The texture, the mirror flap seems, and heat seals are much better from Mark, but I’m happy to put the cheap ones on our unrestored 73 1.7.

Ok, curious, can’t tell what brand etc.
What brand wheel is that? Looks like a vintage Momo. Also, what is the horn button, it looks great! Nice upgrade.

@Freezin 914
It is the Rennline wheel. I chose is specifically because I did not want to see the cheap horn button and I thought the visible bolts were too racey looking for a driver

Finally got Fuched. Would you believe that after 6 914s this is my first set of factory alloys -- not counting the 5-lug stuff. Mostly steelies and sets of Rivieras, Empis, American Racing and Centerlines.

One is kinda chewed up so sorta looking for a nicer 4th in/near Las Vegas within the next decade or I start restoring Nugget, whichever comes first laugh.gif

Drove the 74 for the first time in weeks, maybe even a couple of months.
Been too busy lately, traveling for business and general life.
Had to jump start it but once it was going, took it around the valley here in Valley Center and just tootled along, loving every minute of it.

Drove it for a quick 20 miles yesterday, drained the oil, pulled the sump off and let it all drain overnight.

Had to work a little bit to get the sump cover off - it was sealed up really well - and did find a little sludge inside. First time I've had it off since I got it 4 years ago.

Today, put a @914werke tuna can on, pulled the oil temp sender and got it calibrated/aligned in some boiling water with my @jbell959 temp gauge and got everything buttoned back up and put a quart in to let it sit overnight. Hopefully it's sealed properly since it's been absolutely bone dry until now!

Ready to fill it up with Driven DT50 15w50 - switching from Valvoline VR1.

My 72 the bumper hung out over the valance in the rear. Unlike the front. I always wanted to have it the same in back.

I also never liked the lincoln continental rear door look of the bumpers. The sides just hung out. So I tucked them in so they matched the body line and has a nice little reveal where they over lap the body on the side.

For Luftgekuhlt, I installed my double wrapped stock 914 wheel with my hockey-puck horn center piece. I figured people expect to see that on these cars. But once home, I reinstalled my 370mm Prototipo which was covered by Dallas Customs. It may seem like a thick rim, but it is just under 4" total. Same diameter as new performance-car steering wheels; it is a comfortable fit in my hands. beerchug.gif

drove it yesterday for the first time in 11 months. 80 miles to my destinatiin with no problems at all, except an intermittent squealing fan belt. 50 miles into the return and the left reat caliper started to bind on.

released some fluid slackened the pads off a bit and made it home.

Tonight i stripped that corner down in readiness to inspect the caliper internally. i'm also going to paint the brake disc shield.

Finished installing the transmission that I rebuilt over the winter. Hats off to Dr. Evil for his video and his help sorting out a first gear issue. I needed to remove the rear cover and adjust the slider a bit so that first gear would fully engage.

Buttoned up the oil change after seeing no leaks overnight. Completed the valve adjustment after managing to get the drivers valve cover wedged in a funny position and had to pry the bail off the end to release it. New gaskets with gaskacinch on the cover to gasket surfaces.

While underneath, noticed that my cooling flaps thermostat wire had moved itself off the roller so got that corrected.

Completed putting things back together with a really nice, new-to-me drivers side lower engine tin from Gerold Shaffer to replace mine that had an ear broken off.

Back from a 50 mile test run and all seems dry and well. Runs great and the Driven 15-50 gave a noticeable reduction in operating temp.

Greetings from Milan, IN.
