What cover gas cap is that? Looks like you have no hood gap.

Today i checked checked the differential bearing preload. I had to make two tools to do this step. It was below the allowable spec. I am assuming the reason is because the bearings are used. I wish I had a set of new bearings to install and use the original spacers. I would like to see if the new bearings would bring the preload back into spec. Otherwise I will have to re-shim the diff to bring it to spec....

The gas cover is from an Audi TT, I got it from a member here. I don't thin I need a hood cap.

I started both cars today , the 2.0 djet started with no issues, but the green one with the dual webbers was having issues starting. I think somehow water got into the webbers. I got it to start but popping like hell and wouldn't stay running.

Finally got that last piece of linkage hardware and got the carbs synch'd and running.

How much water do you think may have gotten ingested? One of the cylinders may have filled up through an open intake valve.

Disable your fuel pump, pull the spark plugs and crank the engine over to get any water out of the cylinders (it could get a little messy, so place some shop rags over the open holes), and check for water in your oil.

Hey! chair.gif

I resemble that remark!

Also, be sure to disconnect your coil. If you're running a pertronix, make sure you disconnect your dizzy too, or you may burn it up.

Get some dry gas and throw it in the tank.

Change your oil.

Starting fluid spray will help to get rid of some of the water too.

If you're having your daughter help you get it started, make sure she know to let go of the key when it catches, and not switch it back off in a panic. headbang.gif

I've driven her for about 1 mile from the house and back again since installing the engine for the first time since I first took ownership of the car. I worked on the Tachometer and tail lights last night. I kind of got the tach working but based upon my wiring connecting the tach wire to the coil made the engine miss and run rougher. So...there seems to be a missconnection or grounding short somewhere. Or I wonder if there is no 12V going to one of the tach input terminals that appears to require that?

So getting close to putting the engine back and decided to get rid of the heavy and manky sound proofing against the firewall. Don't know if any of you have used this stuff but it is a bit of a trick handling it over the various contours with it's self adhesive backing. Looks really good in the car-not sure how this pic will come out.

Later, Jeremy and I exposed more clean metal on the '72. Trying not to remove the door-ding filler spots. There's a lot of original (fast) yellow paint on the door. Driver side is almost done smile.gif

Somehow the fan had come loose from the hub. There is a bolt that holds it on, so it is something I will be checking from now on.

More worrisome was the woodruff key. It was too small; like it had been worn. And the fan hub had some damage near the slot for the woodruff key. So I swapped out the hub, and the woodruff key. I also used a different fan bolt from one of my other engines.

I plan to check that bolt over the weekend, and then at oil changes. So fingers crossed.

Did you blue loctite on the hub bolt? I noticed the woodruff key on a type 1 gen/alt look the same as that hub key but a tad smaller. Did the crank slot get boogered up?

Tried to get an electrical fire going in the tunnel wiring harness. Added a self-powered amp behind the passenger seat and wired it into an existing fused line from the battery which runs to an old amp which drove the old sub-woofer which was taken out. Turned on the radio and the new self-powered (Kenwood) sub sounded great. But didn't figure the old amp was drawing that much power since it wasn't driving anything, but was wrong. Enjoying the tunes for 5 mins when I smelled burning wires. Shut off radio, disconnected battery and had extinguisher ready. The main power was replaced with a lesser fuse. Fortunately no trace that any other wires were affected and all electricals work fine. In other words, dodged a major bullet.
