Nice, Doug. I'm sorry I never bought any of the Byron Original planes before they went under dry.gif

Where do you fly?

Hi Mark,

I fly out at El Toro (the not-so-Great Park). Been doing the model thing for 30 years, everything from a 100" Stinson Reliant with a glorified 26-cc weedeater 2-stroke to r/c-converted stick-n-tissue free flight models. The Cub is a Sig kit, and somewhat overpowered...like my 914! piratenanner.gif

Went for a drive with Nolan in the /6 from San Jose up highway 9 to Skyline Blvd stopping at Alice's for a break. Then got a call from my wife who was heading over to Santa Cruz with some family friends for dinner. We shot out from Alice's to the coast and down HWY 1 to Santa Cruz. Had dinner at Pleasure pizza then dessert at Marianne's Ice Cream Shop before heading home back over HWY 17. Lots of fun driving. driving.gif

I had to run over to the shop to snag some specialized metric tools this morning so I could take more parts off of Dianne's 1.7L 'moder' (it's here at the house). Removed the cooling fan/pulley and housing, engine mount bar and bracket, alternator, and the remaining tin stuff.

When I removed the fan housing, one of the wave washers was missing, so apparently it's been [at least partially] apart at sometime in the past. Maybe the crank seals and/or oil cooler seals were replaced? ... maybe a total rebuild? confused24.gif

I won't know for sure how far someone's been into it until I get the heads off and take a peek inside popcorn[1].gif

Later that same day, went to my auto shop class with a big box of tin parts. Unfortunately, the shop's parts washer pump failed last week and the new pump hadn't arrived yet, so I blasted the cooling fan/pulley, and some of the tin parts that weren't greasy.

Really nice car, what did you do to your rear finder wells to widen them. Mike
'73-914kid
That was actually done by the previous owner. They cut the fender in two places, pulled it out, and welded in a strip to make everything smooth again. It's a little wavy, but at least is symmetrical side to side..haha

Got her back on the road!!! Had removed the dizzy for cleaning and did not reinstall it in the proper position. Haynes helped get it back to TDC for #1 and she fired up after fighting it off and on for 5 months.

I replaced the voltage regulator. I then proceeded to remove the roof and go for a coastside test drive. The battery is now charging, and no more big voltage drops with the brake lights or turn signals…

Pushed it off the lift out back, again (sigh)
Put the 911 on the lift and stripped off all the dented sheet metal.
Dry fit all the new sheet metal.

Off to tune up the fender flanges tonight for a snug fit.
They it all goes to the painter.

Should be on the road again for Hershey.
Then, again, after a long hiatus, I may get time to work on the 914 between my job, my house and travel.

Working on the front trunk rain channels as they are half rotten been trying to figure out the best was to do this? Ended up buying some 3/4" square tubing and ripped it with my table saw with a 10" 3mm chop saw blade down to a 1/2". The width is perfect just not sure if the 1/2" is going to be too deep once I get the trunk rubber in. Also the metal tubing is fairly thick gauge but was thinking it might work as a cowl brace and stiffen it up a bit.

I'm still a little confused if I should spray the car in primer and just tape off the rusty sections till I fix it? Or just fix the rust and spray the whole car when it's done? It's in a heated garage but have a couple of areas getting a little bit of flash rust.. I spent a lot on getting it blasted so I don't want to waste it.. If I do prime it I'm just scared of the metal bits getting stuck into the fresh primer paint.

So, the asshole cops with nothing better to do than harrass good citizens came by today while I was at work. Told my roommate that Christine looked like an abandoned car( which is hilarious as I don't know many people who put an umbrella cover on a Porsche and abandon it in front of their house). Told her that if I didn't move the car they would tow it away. Now, keep in mind, Christine is properly tagged, fully insured, completely operational with air in all 4 tires parked in front of my house legally. Therefore, when I got home from work tonight I fired her up, took her for a drive, then swung by the local asshole precinct. I convinced an officer to come outside and look at the car and asked him what he saw. His reply was "A cool little sports car that sounded and looked good, just needed a paint job". So I say to him, "You mean it doesn't look like an abandoned car?", to which he replied was I trying to be funny, how could it be an abandoned car if I were out driving it and it was licensed properly and everything working. I said my point exactly and handed him a picture of Christine and told him to post it where the "gang" that worked there could see it and to have them stop threatening to have my "abandoned car towed! I then got in Christine and did 2 laps around the parking lot and drove off. I will probably be arrested on some bullshit charge tomorrow but for tonight, I made my point and it felt really good. Party on folks and finger.gif the man!

Wow! I read recently that you have one of the highest crime rates in the country one of the 5 most dangerous cities to live in.... surely they should have better things to be doing - sounds like you have a neighbor that may have made a complaint? confused24.gif

Back in the late 70's, I got a call from a friend while I was at work ... told me that Redondo Beach PD had my 67 bus towed from my house because an 'auto theft detective' said the license plate and DMV record didn't match the VIN tag. If he knew his ass from a hole in the ground, he would have known the tag he was reading wasn't a VIN tag, but a paint code tag screwy.gif

Lol, I think there are several LEOs here that own 914s. Philip is right, it's your neighbor that's complaining about your car. Cops usually don't know if a car is abandoned or even do anything about it unless they get a complaint.
