Nice day here in Bogart... I was able to get a coat of epoxy primer and a couple of coats of 2k primer on my steel flare install. Hope to have it ready to paint by early spring.
If you look close you can see all 3 of my 914s

Transmission and CV' put the new wheels/tires on an out her on the ground! Now I can pull the front tires/wheels and get them shipped off the their new home in Arkansas!

Oh and I forgot to say that I put 195/65 's on these rims and I have over an inch of space yet, I could have put 205's on and had room easily! Now I know what i have space forwith the next pair. i have a line on some decent 15X6 that i am going to put track tires on for taking her to D.E. days at Robeling Road track here in Savanah.

Since the car got stolen and recovered in Barstow, CA, I have been going slow and easy gathering parts again (used or whatever); had very little desire to work on the car except to get the parts to make it legal for licensing. I have made very good progress and now is the time to see if I have everything covered.
Just finishing up the Alfa Romeo Spider, and I did get started in wiring in the front oil cooler fans, fuel pump/DME, mounting oil cooler and ducting, original front and rear bumpers. A relatively slow start but a start. The next thing will be to get the wiring done and go for a start. Car was running but the harness, etc. was cutup gettng the radio out by the "midnight auto supply mechanics".
It is a start; now to keep it going.

Wow, look at you go, Jim
Almost finished with all the electrical/electronic work in the Westy. Did a lot of repairs to the electrical wiring 'while I was I there'. Also tightened up every nut, bolt and screw I ran across in the cabinetry - she is tight now
Swapped out all the incandescent bulbs for LED panel lights, and added a 36" wide Pilot® LED strip across the bottom of the rear air conditioner cabinetry (the photo doen'nt show the luminosity very well, but it really lights up the rear cargo area and the engine bay pretty good).
Click to view attachmentI also picked up a
red 36" wide LED strip to do a third bake light mod (Vanagon tail lights are low to the ground, just like Porsches, ya know)
The HAM radio gear is all working too
Click to view attachmentNow to put all the tools away and start cleaning up the rest of the interior
Click to view attachmentI'm on the hunt for a reasonably-priced set of CLK 16x7" alloys for when I go get some taller off-road tires. PM me if you run across a set (like these)

I've never torn into the front suspension before, I need a bit ofhelp . How do you get the front center cap off? Do I just pry it off.? I am taking the rotor off to put my 5-lugs on and dont wnt to bend or break anything!

I usually go at it with a flat blade screwdriver& tap it with a hammer....second choice is a big pair of channel lock pliers spanning the cap and a few taps with a small hammer to break it loose.

Drove it from 9am to 1pm within orange county (Anaheim, Orange, Fullerton and Cypress) to 2 different Best Buy stores and Fry's Electronics and friends house. First time to drove it on 91 Freeway traffic which I thought I will have problem on my cooling system. Well I got maximum 230 to 235 degrees based on the Thermo dipstick.
And yesterday I was able to clean or remove old paint from this 2 wheels and maybe another 2 tomorrow.

screw driver worked fine- took it off tonight , I put the new 5 lug rotor and new bearings on , but have a couple questions-
1 how tight to make the nut that holds on the rotor etc,
2. when greasing the bearings, do I completely fill the void in between the bearings etc with grease- pack it in tight and full?
3. the dust shields rub on the 14" fuchs, is there a smaller dust shield, do I just bend them? or take them off completely?
thanks.

Finished up the fuel lines under and in the engine compartment, now just the tank to put back in. Hooked up the throttle cable, and put the wheels back on.
Should have it drivable again tomorrow.......but it's raining.
Sunday I pick up the white car from original customs, Mark has the -6 mount welded in, oil tank holes cut, and the old engine mounts gone.

1 how tight to make the nut that holds on the rotor etc,
Tighten the nut up 'hand tight' and check for wobble (up & down, back and forth).
The rotors should spin without too much difficulty, but shouldn't have any 'end play' or wobble. Then tighten up the Allen bolt on the nut(s) to keep them where you set them. You may need to re-tighten the nuts again a few miles down the road after the bearings seat in a bit.
2. when greasing the bearings, do I completely fill the void in between the bearings etc with grease- pack it in tight and full?
If you don't have a bearing 'juicer' (packing tool), load 'em up and work the grease into the bearing(s) with your fingers, rotate them around and pack them again to be sure you have all surfaces covered.
3. the dust shields rub on the 14" fuchs, is there a smaller dust shield, do I just bend them? or take them off completely?
I think the dust shields are different for '6' (14" wheels), but you can get away with limited driving until you get it figured out.
thanks.

OK, change in plans with the Westy. I had a spare 12-volt 255Ah AGM battery stashed away under my work bench, that was destined for my trailer. It just so happened that there was just enough room for it under the passenger side of the rear bench seat ... so, that's where it is now, along with the relocated inverter.

thanks for all the advice!! I kind of figured that the /6 shields might be different. I could trim them but I think I will just try to bend them slightly, but if anyone has some /6 shields they want to get rid of let me know, one other note on that line, I got some zinc plated ones for Craig at Camp914, they are awesome looking but the mounting holes are a half inch further apart than my current one, so I think they may be for either 911 or early/6. the shield itself looks identical in diameter. now I could just drill out the holes and mount them but before I do that I thought I would try to find out more about the variations between these different sizes and mounting hole positions.

Got the fuel tank in and hooked up......put some gas in it.........turned the key........and she fired right up.
Drove it off the lift and down the block.....still needs an alignment, anything over 50 is a bit shaky. Got some strange looks from neighbors, no top....no drivers door....kinda of a breezy drive.
Or maybe they just noticed the multi color.
Back in the shop.
Click to view attachmentThen I remembered I had a red top also, ties it all together.
Click to view attachmentMaybe multi colors, but the rear trunk lid was rusted...the red one isn't, the passengers door glass didn't work......the red one does. The drivers door glass doesn't work either but I didn't have another door, so I'll have to fix this one...thats why it's not back on yet. But at least its somewhat driveable again, and the lift is free for the white car tomorrow.
