Brian (bcheney) came over today and we talked 914 stuff for a few hours.

Saw his nice 914 conversion. We are like 470 serial numbers away in 1975.

He media blasted some parts, he gave me some ideas on some things to look out for in the conversion!

We probably could have chatted all day!

Next time, he owes me a ride, though...

"laid" some glass (new windshield) actually took less than 10 minutes to lay the bead of butyl, then seconds to drop it into place. I'll have thread later on the engineering controls I did to install it singlehandedly.

It was such a nice hot day today, I emptied my outdoor work bench, cleaned it and brushed on a thick coat of sealer ...

... then a few hours later, brushed on a top coat.

Also installed a 16 receptacle electrical box that one of my neighbors gave me aktion035.gif

I might throw a second coat on the bench tomorrow idea.gif

Then I'll tear a greasy motor apart on the fresh clean surface laugh.gif

Actually, I'm already thinking about moving the big box up above the back rest on the bench idea.gif

Learned a lot more about wheel backspace than I thought I would need to know. My current wheels are apparently VW backspace at 4 inches. With stock tires the rears rubbed the fender when cornering hard or on large bumps. Had a set of Pedrinis that I cleaned and painted.

Then noted they were for early models and mine is a 75. Grabbed a set of steel wheels as a temp measure. Cleaned them up and noted they were pretty trashed. Next!

Borrowed a set of aluminum wheels from a buddy. Stripped, polished, and clear coated them.

They were hub centric piratenanner.gif but I measured the backspace and guess what? They were 4 inch backspace. The same as my current ones! headbang.gif

Ok so off to the machine shop with the Pedrinis to have the cut to fit the late model hubs. But at least I will have a decent looking set of wheels that don't rub even when I go to a bigger tire. Nothing like doing it the hard way!

Installed a set of Wilwood calipers on the front to add lightness and get a bit better brake pedal travel vs. the "A" calipers. Hard to believe the weight of the old "A" calipers....really a boat anchor class item. Also, check out the meat in the pads on the Wilwoods vs. a new pad for the "A's".......

Finally finished the cowling for the new and incorrectly sized radiator from Renegade (wasn't an exact replacement for the old one that sprung a leak), thus finalizing the winters work (Dr. Evil sorted 901, new 7 qt oil pan, complete shifter bush rebuild, CV rebuild, Carb rebuild) just to discover on the first test drive the rear main on the SB is leaking like a sieve.

Had to hang around the shop from 10 to 3, waiting for a transport company to pick up a 2L engine that's going back to Baltimore. I forgot to take my compression tester with me, so I couldn't work on the 2.7L dry.gif ... so I hung out at a couple of the neighboring shops (Corvette repair, and a small body shop) to help the time go by.

Sorted through some 914 parts and gathered up some hardware for a re-gasket of the exhaust system on the Westy.

A real exciting day rolleyes.gif

Yeah....it's going to be fun getting the front to rear balance set...
My A calipers were 3.5 inch...an easy bolt on...had to ream out the bolt holes just a scoch and used 8 inch long hard lines from the flaps... 2 washers under the ears to center them.....easy install...

After almost a year after she first arrived, now rustoration done and all cleaned up under and inside, she's off to the body shop for final prep & paint, now I have room in the garage for other work. Now to borrow an engine stand and tear into that thing to figure what I've got.
Removed beat up vinyl from door panels now first one with epoxy/fiberglass laid onto underside to flatten and reinforce the panel. It's handy to have some heavy slabs of countertop granite to weigh the panel down flat.

Put my Flares on and they look @$#&*# great !!
Really happy with the way the rockers line up too
but the 916 front and rear bumper are the worst my bodyman has seen
I cant believe how bad it is.
It is so badly lined up I would not use this to cling to if it was the only floating debris in a ship wreck Id rather drown.
The front and rear bumper came from Show cars in Canada and Im not sure where they come from only someplace in USA but if anybody knows where GOOD quality 916 bumper can be found let me know..Please
I only have body work to go then I'm driving after a 3 yr project

They did turn out well. Just used paint for wheels from the FLAPS. Pictures of can attached. I used a semi gloss clear over the paint. I also painted the openings black. Gives a cool look when moving.

I have been on the lookout for a YOM (year of model) license plate to run on my 914 but wanted the number/letter combo to be somewhat relevant to my 914. I have seen one with the sequence PA-1974 but the guy wanted close to $100 for it blink.gif

So today at a VW show, I stopped by one of the vendors who had a crate full of tags. I asked if he had any Tennessee tags from 1974. "Let me look" was his reply and then he handed be this...
