Got the 6 speed back in. Axles and CV's greased up and ready for new bolts. Got to wait until Monday when the boltdepot.com order shows up.
My new CV's require a spacer and 10mm x 80mm bolts. The spacer is so the axle can slide in the CV and not bottom out in the flange cup.

Replaced fuel filler neck gasket on top of gas tank. At least the inside of my tank looked pretty good. Looking to see if the new gasket helps with some fuel vapor smells I get every now and then. I've replaced all (and I mean all) of the vacuum/evap hoses in the car (and the plastic ones along the longs are not cracked.)

I have been on the lookout for a YOM (year of model) license plate to run on my 914 but wanted the number/letter combo to be somewhat relevant to my 914. I have seen one with the sequence PA-1974 but the guy wanted close to $100 for it
So today at a VW show, I stopped by one of the vendors who had a crate full of tags. I asked if he had any Tennessee tags from 1974. "Let me look" was his reply and then he handed be this...

AWESOME: I bought a "memphis" one, just incase I did not pass emissions and had to go the antique route. I like yours better.
I have an 85 tag on my 85 vw cabriolet. I get more comments about the tag than the car. People just don't remember the old days when TN used population to mark the counties.... Shelby County and Memphis were #1.... and yours is Chattanooga, Hamilton Co.
Very cool.

Sort of, Bob. I don't think anyone will be able to ride it
I used to dabble with metal sculptures before I got married - much smaller items though:
Motorcycles, Model 'A's, dune buggies, bi-planes and sailing vessels, meant for desk top/coffee table display, and constructed mostly from small old school electronic components.
This bike will be displayed at our annual 'Burning Ham' event (Ham radio guys and girls camping/dirt biking event), held at Cuddeback Dry lake in the Mojave Desert. Last year, the bike I made out of wood got, um, burned
Now that I'm retired, I have plenty of time to 'play'. Maybe I'll do a 914 some day

Finally finished the cowling for the new and incorrectly sized radiator from Renegade (wasn't an exact replacement for the old one that sprung a leak), thus finalizing the winters work (Dr. Evil sorted 901, new 7 qt oil pan, complete shifter bush rebuild, CV rebuild, Carb rebuild) just to discover on the first test drive the rear main on the SB is leaking like a sieve.
Finally found out what the problem was. Not a rear main thank goodness. My new seven quart oil pan was leaking out of a few pan bolts. I took em out and used yellow teflon, stuffed em back in and no more leaking! Saweet!
Pity I discovered a coolant leak at the engine inlet. Very difficult to access on a Renegade conversion. I'll have to remove the belts, the auxilliary water pump and all the associated hoses just to get to the offending inlet. Poop
Jeez, did my PO ever do any maintainence? I've had the car almost a year and have yet to put a hundred miles on it due to "one thing after another"

David- My Renegade notes say to let the motor idle until the thermostat opens as the water pump has no bypass like the chevy pump. So if you rev it too high the water pump will make allot of pressure that could spring a leak at the weakest point.

Let's see, last night I started it, found more things I need to fix, and also found less things I needed to fix.
All the fuel lines got replaced in the engine compartment, new filters, etc. One less thing I have to deal with!
On the other hand, the carbs on the car have chokes on them, which I should be able to trade for the choke delete plates off the other set I have. Good news though is that I have either 28 or maybe 32 vents, but they aren't labeled inside on the top.

Hello folks,
My car was charging just little over 12V so I swapped the voltage regulators today. It's now making 13.5V and good to go!
I am happy to know that the alternator is still good.
The last shiny metal Bosch was made in Spain and was in the car only for 3 years. This one in the plastic body is made by Hella from Germany. Let's see how long it will live.

- Replaced the 40+ year old rubber bushings on my a-arms with nice poly-bronze bushings.
In the process found out that my tub still has a few little bends in the wrong places as the new bushings started binding when bolted down.
- Fixed the grinding noise in the back by shaving off a bit from the caliper mounting ear where the rotor was hitting it. (Thanks to McMark for finding that so quickly!)
- Replaced the broken speedo cable with a brand new one. Still not working. I'm hoping it's the speedo, i'm gonna have to crack that open.
1 step forward, 3 steps back. About normal for a day working on the 914 ...

Drove it to work today!!
First time since the 2056 build last fall, and since installing Antique plates (which could make it risky to commute daily).
Beautiful morning drive, temp in the 60's and not too much traffic for DC. Hoping to leave by 4:30 today to enjoy the drive home before traffic gets crazy.
By the time I get home, I'll be over 700 miles on the rebuild toward the 1000 mile valve adjust, oil change, etc.

Click to view attachmentWow! This seems like it would be a handy way to "mock" up a paint scheme to see how it might look on the car. Specifically, if you wanted to use it on your rockers, wheels, bumpers, or other bits to try out LE scheme variations.
I've personally been considering an LE scheme with Adriatic Blue instead of the Creamsicle scheme and no lettering. Obviously a lot of work between now and then, but keeping the car white means less repainting inside and keeping the original color. I really like the contrast of white Empi wheels with the white body instead of trim colored wheels, but since it isn't an LE I have room to fiddle with it. I've been undecided as well on whether to go with FG bumpers, or get the original ones rechromed.

Can you mask off what you painted and paint additional graphics over it?
I used to construct RC gliders and would use something called MonoKote, a heat-shrink material, to cover the framework.
While most other guys would overlay contemporary graphics (they looked nice, but boring to me), I would apply bright yellow flames cut from MonoKote across the leading edges and down the fuselages
