I ain't done diddly,
I ain't done shit,
and I really don't mean to be
a hypocrite

Tellin' y'all to get 'em running
get 'em off them old jack stands
I've been shirking my responsibility
and dealing with some other plans

Mine's been sitting in the driveway,
and just collecting daily dust,
one of these days I'll get to drive it
even if it smells like 40 year-old rust ...

Went and looked at the 3.2 today, unfortunately during the leak down test two cylinders had bad leaks from the valves. headbang.gif sooo I didn't buy it. Looks like it's back to rebuilding the 2.7.......pulling it tomorrow. smash.gif

Took her to the Historic Races at PIR today. Got a lot of great attention from Porsche people, 914 people and other people. Had a lot of fun, saw some great cars race and had way too much sunshine.

Kids finally went to sleep around 10:30pm so I had a chance to lube all the hinges and latches. Front trunk went from squeaky to dead silent now.

Seems like I have been everywhere but here working on my car - but today was a good day. Started putting my dash back together with a few 914Rubber products.

Slapped a Rockford Fosgate mono amp in the front trunk to run the bazooka. Enough low end to round things out. Then took the wife out for a wailin' ride down to the beach. Beautiful evening. Now I'm off to bury the bone piratenanner.gif

BTW, if they'd have put a 2056 or such from the factory they prolly would have sold 226,000 of these things. It was the 70's and Amerikans wanted lots o HP.

Still do, I reckon' blink.gif

I went to the store. On the way backhome there wwas a train which slowed and stopped just past the crossing. I backed up and went around the crossing guards with my finger in the air ( they built a railyard a few years ago and the trains block my road all of the time.). I get over the tracks and there's a cop there. So, I crossed a track illegally while giving a policeman the middle finger. Nothing happened.

Put the tin and fan back on after resealing the oil pump cover.
Then tore down the rear brakes. Trying to decide whether send the halves to Eric or find a plater in PDX.

Need to call Eric for a couple adjuster screws. Sockets are trashed.

Super In Law worked on a small wheelhouse patch behind the battery tray. The front corner of the tray rusted a bit over the past 4 years. Front screw for the ECU brackets wouldn't come out.
So we'll replace the tray.

dropped the car off at Leamon's for a valve adjustment...found out I have a Bus engine....not thrilled.
euro911
Have you determined that it is indeed a bus motor, or if it was just build with a bus case?

Did you guys try to bore scope it to see what pistons it has?

At least it isn't BUS-ted and you can still drive it poke.gif

Let me know if you need another motor ... I have a couple of spare long blocks (a 1.8 and a 2.0) that I'd like to sell (at reasonable prices) idea.gif
7TPorsh
thx Mark, no the motor is good; actually I have a receipt from the previous owner that it is a rebuilt 2.0 motor in there...just never hit my head to check if it's a bus or not. Thought it just had the 1.7 heads on it.

Leamon says the engine number on the back is the key; different spot than 914 motor i guess.

So were guessing the PO just replaced the whole thing with a bus motor rather than swapping out the internals.

It's been running ruf so doing a valve job and weber adjustment.

Someone is coming to look at the '67 Bug tomorrow, so I headed down to the shop to check on it. Luckily, it was still there laugh.gif

It wouldn't start, so put it on the charger.

Whist there, I rummaged around and grabbed some 2.0L '6' P&Cs, heads and cam shafts to drop off at the machine shop for tolerance checking, machining and/or polishing as needed.

Also found a few boxes of 2.2L '6' parts - 6 complete heads, both cam chain housings with covers, complete set of valve covers, and a Marelli S112AX (20°) dizzy smile.gif

This 2.2L came out of a 'Sport-o-matic car

Also found a box with 3 bare heads dated 5/67 that THOMAS gave me a few years ago. Gonna clean everything up and post 'em in the classifieds.

Let me know if you're interested in any of these parts. They won't be dirt cheap, but reasonable priced (except for the Marelli) happy11.gif

Hung out at the shop for several hours today smile.gif

Cleaned up the interior of the '67 Bug, as a prospective buyer was scheduled to take a peek at it today.

Cataloged and hot-tanked some '6' motor parts.

Weighed and measured some F&R 5-lug suspension components so I can price shipping for an interested party.

Later that same day: Sold the Bug for $2,200. cheer.gif

Also, looked at Dianne's 1.7L. Need to drain the oil and start disassembling it for failure analysis and evaluation. I think the cam bearings are shot, as valve adjustments have always been 'iffy'. I'm anxious to finally get to see what her motor really is, since several people refuse to believe it's a stock 1.7 confused24.gif

Then Richard (Type 4 Unleashed) will gather up what it will need and complete the long block rebuild. Note to self: Need to resist Richard's suggestion to 'build it bigger', as I would like to keep it as close to stock as possible, and continue to run the OEM D-jet FI.

Also talked with my body/paint guy today ... going to get an estimate for minor metal work and paint on her car. I want to rebuild the suspension system before paint, so I'd better round up everything it'll need. I think we just need to purchase rear bushings, already have the front stuff, including a 17mm anti-sway bar (with Engman/Mad Dog reinforcement plates), and new PMB calipers for all 4 corners aktion035.gif

went visit my 914, at the shop, where it has been getting my old a-arms, tie rods and ball joints removed, and all new put in, including new repowdercoated a-arms with new bushings from Bruce stone . I have not had time so Bob Woodman here in Beaufort and of course George, his "retired" Porsche mechanic, put on my new parts, turbo tie rods included, and all aligned!!! under side of the car looks like brand new. Brakes are bled, but George is a picky you-know-what and was not satisfied with theplay in the shift linkage- so he's replacing the bushing that are in the center tunnel - oh, and he also set the valves- they were on the tight side, but timing is not perfectly set at this time, because my TDC mark is gone!- so I have a question, what is the best way to mark it? -
I am going to be ready for DE day at Robeling Road in Sept., AND Octeenerfest too!!!! pretty excited as I have missed the last 2 events, but this time I am pretty sure I will be there. Next item up is to get my door locks and handles fixed.

- one other question-how do you tighten up the steering column? it has a bit of up and down play to it?

Phil, to find TDC:

1. Remove your dizzy cap and take note of where cyl #1 spark plug wire is
2. Remove cyl #1 spark plug
3. Jack car up so one rear wheel is off the ground (or if both, chock one of them)
4. Place the shifter in 5th gear
5. Have an assistant rotate the un-chocked wheel until you see the dizzy rotor is pointing at cyl #1 firing position
6. Insert a chop-stick into the spark plug hole ... laugh.gif
6. Insert a long plastic straw into the spark plug hole so it contacts the top of the piston
7. Have your assistant rotate the wheel forward and backward several inches while you are watching the straw move in and out of the hole. When the straw is at the highest point, you're at TDC for that cyl.
8. Verify again that the rotor is still pointing at cyl #1 firing position
9. Locate the notch in the inspection hold on your fan housing and paint a '0' on the fan
10. Measure the distance forward of TDC to mark your ignition timing mark (this depends on the specific engine that you have)

There is a good tech article on Pelican, including a gauge you can copy, cut and place on your fan to mark your particular ignition advance setting, again with a dab of paint. You may wish to paint TDC one color and your X° BDC mark with another color.

Hey, I did something on my 914 last weekend! Shocking I know. blink.gif

It's OK though, I didn't break anything. I just put spacers on the front. Oh, and cleaned/replaced spark plugs. One of the old ones broke - I got most of it, but figured the rest would just come out the tailpipe. Eventually.

Oh relax, I'm kidding!

DRPHIL914

Thanks for the info. I think I can do that. Nit I will have to wait, I didn't get to bring the car home because the shop did not receive the gear things for adjusting the rear calipers, so the car is up in the air waiting on the package fro pmb so they can set the rear inside venting. But brakes are bled, my new a-arms are in , all new ball joints and turbo tie rods too!! So once she is down they will get the alignment done on the rear . I think I will be putting on some 5 or 7mm spacers on the front (running the 14" fuchs-5 lug) with 195's. I should have put on 205's and probably will get a second set for track d.e. days - looking for some 15's or 16's to put some toyls or such on just for that. Anyway if they have time we will also put in new shift bushings in the tunnel I didn't do that, I did the rears and the firewall one but it needs it. Hopefully by next weekend its ready to go!
