Summer is winding down in the Willamette Valley. Our rain (and we love it) is due to make a brief appearance this coming week and so I took my car out for a long drive on the back roads today. The parked car photo is taken just outside of the south side of Amity, Oregon. The road shot is Hwy 153, between Portland and Salem for those of you who do not know the area. I also found a nicely named road just north of McMinnville; Northwest Poverty Bend Road connects Hwy 47 and Westside Road. It's a little two lane ditty that is a short but fun drive.

Installed the new targa top.

Joe,
How did you refinish the top of the. . .top huh.gif? Mine needs help before I can show it in public again.
JoeSharp
Hey Bryan, no the top came from Linda painted along with the rear valance done . Now that I know how to spell it Ican find a place to get the front one done.
Phoenix914
Thanks Joe. My last attempt to refinish the targa top didn't hold up very well. I will take it to someone who can prep and spray better than I can for the next round. The Line-x looks pretty good.

Ordered the parts for my back brakes today....... hope they get here by the weekend.

Got an email that my new cocomats have been shipped.

Also, I considered changing the headlight bulb today (one of the high beams is out), but then didn't get around to it.

{Hmmm... not sure that really qualifies as DOING something.}

Glad to see you posting pix again Joe. My Lumix camera died last month and shortly after, Dianne's camera took a poop too. Bought her a new one and liked it so much, bought one for myself biggrin.gif

I went to start the Vanagon ('Eileen') yesterday, but she didn't want to run, just sputtered and died dry.gif Hoping she's just low on gas (gauge doesn't work) confused24.gif ... she just passed smog a month ago and was running fine. I guess I'd better stick a battery in the 'BB and see how she runs after sitting for months sad.gif

Another great Multi tool use! Picked up my wheels from the machine shop (turned 00s into 01s). It didn't take long to discover sanding and cleaning wasn't going to be as easy as I thought. Old paint and brake dust are hard to get off!

Slapped a scratch pad onto the Multi tool and Wallaahh! Clean wheels!

Now to get then finished an on the car... driving.gif

Got me some new tires so I can safely drive to OkteenerFest tomorrow.... I am a cheapo, so nothing fancy. Ended up with 50K mile Falken's.

the PO put 195/60 on 14 years ago. I think that must have been the day before the valve seat dropped and he parked it. Hated to pull "full tread" tires, but they were OLD.

I got lucky too. piratenanner.gif They only had 3 of the tires I wanted, so I got an upgrade at the same price. $281 for 4 185/60, so I had him find me a spare from there "take-off" pile. I liked the width of the 195 but decided to go with 185. Price and availability won out on size.

Two 356 sightings in as many days - cool.

I poured a couple gallons of petrol in the Westy's tank and after a few cranks, she started up and ran fine. Guess I'd better put some effort into fixing the sender or gauge idea.gif

i just wanted to start a thread to see what you guys do day to day on your cars.

i'll start,

about a month ago, i pulled my engine and trans to put in a new clutch. had the flywheel lightened and resurfaced. but what i didnt know is that i had to shim the little ball that the clutch arm rides on, after a resurfacing. so guess what i did today?

yup, pulled the trans and put an extra washer under the ball. you have to goop up both washers to get it to seal because the threaded hole goes all the way thru to the inside of the trans. i also replaced the plastic cup that the ball rides in. the throwout bearing and its little plastic blocks were fine so i buttoned every thing back up. 5 hours total. i think this has been the cheapest repair yet on my car. $2.75 for the little plastic cup.

what did you do to your 914 today?

Bought my 914 a month ago. Changed the alternator today - 7 hours. I'm used to front engine vehicles. All I can say is WOW! I hope other things are easier.

Changed the filter & oil to Mobile 1 (relax, it's not a type4) and finished dying my carpet.

Drove my teener over the twisty roads to Cleveland, Georgia and had lunch with my mother and my ex-wife, Nancy. Even though Nancy and I have been divorced 34 years, we still remain friends. Seven years ago when her son, John, lost his battle with brain cancer, we lean on each other for support. She and her other son, Steve, came to my daughter's wedding. Life is too short to harbor ill feelings to anyone.

Nancy and I bought the car together in 1973 and she had not seen it in over 34 years. She was amazed how good it look. We drove it from Atlanta to the west coast in 1975. It vapor locked in Arizona with temps above 110! Turned heater on to avoid more vapor locking! smile.gif

Please do ... some of us could use a laugh biggrin.gif

'Something' kept draining the 'BB's battery and I had a sneaky suspicion to what it was. I traced it down to the HAM radio I installed several months ago. Apparently it draws a constant 1 Amp of current even though the radio is OFF dry.gif ... Sitting for a couple of days takes a lot out of the battery.

I bought a 20 Amp toggle switch this morning - need to install it under the dash along with a bright LED so I remember to switch it off idea.gif

I finally finished the front trunk!!
1. Moved 3.2 fuel pump back to stock 75 location
2. Added 911 3.2 charcoal canister and related components to PMS Fuel Cell. The 3.2 charcoal canister is located in right rear GT Fender. Hopefully this will get rid of the fuel smell.
3. Added Stereo Amplifier.
4. Replaced steering coupler. It didn't look too bad, but I don't trust any rubber on the car that is original. The steering does feels a little tighter.
5. Fixed front trunk latch. It opens night and day better. I reran the cable and used silicon lube. It used to be harder than hell to pull the release under the dash.

Was talking w/ "Dr. Phil" this morning & he suggested it was the fuel pump relay. Was not sure which one it was, so I went to my Pop's vintage collection of spare VW/Porsche relays, a bucket full, & looked for the one he had the most spares of. Found the old man had four, 2 still new in the box. Had the battery disconnected anyway, pulled the cover off & pulled out the old relay & popped in the new one. Reconnected the battery & started right up like she was still warm biggrin.gif

Got my 2.7 rebuild going today, took all my parts to Ron at IPB Autosport, he's helping me with my rebuild. He's going to check everything out then ship it off to his machinist.
This will be my first Porsche 6 rebuild so I'm happy to have all of Rons years of experience helping me out ......for a small fee of course biggrin.gif

Can't wait to get this motor rebuilt and back in the car, hopefully I won't need to pull it again for years.. shades.gif

Had some time on Sunday, so I ran out to the shop. Decided I wanted the fresh air blower to work the way it's supposed to. And the lights too.
Much easier when I already have the gas tank out.

Super In Law will tear down the fan motor itself. He'll get both bearings lubed for the next 50 years.

Oh yeah. The project started because it wouldn't run on high speed. At the motor end. Fan always has 12 volts key on. Each switch sends a ground signal to a different motor setting. The high speed setting was sending nothing. So I sprayed the switch contacts with De-Oxit and it started working. But I didn't think it was going to be a 50 year fix.
So we'll take out the controls and give them a once over.

Without the correct rivets, tearing it down any further is out of the question. I guess we'll go with primer and some gold rustoleum.

Ugh, I need to do this too. Fresh air blower has never worked, although I got it to smoke the other day when I cleaned out the contacts on the controls real well. Debating whether I pull the fuel tank and go for it, as the car is on jackstands anyway right now. You may have inspired (or shamed) me. I don't think I have the stomach for dealing with the controls just yet though...

Nice work!
