Pulled her out of the garage for the first time in over a year. Going to have it appraised this week now that I have been told I have her vastly underinsured. Updating vehicle info numbers on VIN registry. Can someone tell me where to find the chassis number and transmission number (if there is one).
I looked in all the places (couldn't see under the dash) the VIN page suggests-nothing. Karmann plate just has the paint code (15).

Got a message about finding the chassis number and thought my reply would update here (guess that's why I'm listed as newbie...). Anyway, here it is. I'm just not having any luck finding it. Also, I've not heard anyone else mention the plate on the passenger headlight bucket (or is it assumed everyone knows about it..)

VIN number is on windshield plate on driver's side, sticker on drivers door jam and stamped into the chassis above passenger wheel well. I also have a small aluminum plate attached to the passenger headlight bucket that has the VIN number stamped into it. The 914/6 designation is molded into the plate along with the vehicle weight limits. The only other stamped number on the plate is '102'.
The Karmann badge is blank where the chassis number should be. No indication that anything was ever there. I also cannot find any number anywhere in the rear trunk. There is some rust along the far back (under the foam pad), but the center section is in near perfect shape with original paint.

agree.gif I got my blower working last weekend, but now I need to get my lights working like you did, Cary. May need some advice and help doing that!

Didn't work at all on my teener this weekend, but I did make space for it in my garage this weekend. I built an enclosed storage space for my Ghia at my in-laws on Maryland's Eastern Shore. This is the Ghia's new home, and hopefully I'll get more driving time with it down there anyway. My first 914 (aka the "Red Onion") should be happy as there's now space inside my garage at home when the snows come this winter.

Beat Navy, forgot to tell you that Black/Blue wire came up from the center console wire bundle.
I did clean up the light sockets with one of my engine oil passage cleaning brushes. Don't know if it helped.
Hopefully I'll improve my one handed video recording technique. LOL.

I wanted to build a 'lean-to' on the 12'x22' space on the back of my garage, but the city building & safety department won't allow it (there's a 7' set-back) mad.gif

I'm gonna start looking for a 'C-Van' to park there instead ... it's not a permanent structure so the (appropriately-named) B&S dept. can't say shit about it bootyshake.gif

Hi Mark - this one's out in the country (not too many covenants or codes to worry about smile.gif ). The roof was already there attached to what my father-in-law affectionately calls his "snake shed" (because the first time he walked in there after buying the property he saw a big ol' blacksnake in the rafters. 15 years later he still checks the rafters before walking going inside.). I enclosed everything and put barn doors on it and some pea gravel on the ground. Should keep the Ghia dry during the winter. Good luck putting something in place for your shelter!

Me too.. It was very much so a last minute/sudden decision. My dad has grown a specific fondness for the car over the last couple of days, and it sounds like we might turn it into his commuter car.. the MPG is much better than his pickup truck.

The car could use paint, as the silver is pretty flat, but I think we may put that off for a while, and just install a few seals to keep the wind noise out, and let him drive it.

There's a very good chance you;ll start seeing it in the GA parking lot Eric biggrin.gif

I removed my side skirts and the old A/C hoses that were underneath! Fortunately my longs appear to be in great shape! There was a ton of dirt, rocks and road debris in there though. The dealer that installed the A/C really did a hack job putting it in. Typical quicky job to bump up the price I'm sure!

Still working on the gas tank. Looks like I'm down to what's called rust stain.
Did the rinse with Por15 Degreaser. Didn't do too much. But there wasn't much in there. Then I went and bought 2 gallons of apple cider vinegar. Still have the stains. Can I even get the stains out without taking it to a radiator shop?

Next will be the Por15 Metal Prep unless someone has a better idea .............
I'd like to get it down to bare metal. Then coat it with Por15 gas tank sealer.

i looked at it, planned on driving to work but the battery was dead dry.gif

so i am considering an optima -

What's the best battery for our cars? my old one is a autozone special lasted only 3 years- probably due to it not having a quick disconnect and getting run down when it wasnt getting driven very often.

still waiting for new CHT to arrive ase well .

Phil- I got a good 8 years out of my previous Optima, however I kept a trickle charger on it & a quick disconnect. Just had to replace it w/ another right before Okteenerfest, due to age & I think sitting in a very cold garage last winter. Going to take my new one out this winter & keep it inside the house on a trickle charger. I use the Optima 34R, (R means the terminals are reversed compared to normal batteries),however it has to be modified slightly to fit- have to shave the tabs/ears off of the base to fit in the tray properly. It's not cheap, but I did find one on line for $168 shipped. Another brand of dry cell to consider is an Odyssey, but I'm not sure what model to look for. Whatever you get just make sure it's a dry cell, not an ordinary lead/acid wet cell- many a hell hole have been formed due to water mixing w/ the acid & flowing down into the longs.

I modified my console to accept the MR2 shifter so I needed to make a new deck piece for it. I won't do any cutting until I have the shift boot in hand.

So back to DIY. Decided to go the Muriatic acid route.

So we built some plates to seal it up. The duct tape wasn't working to well. Not real interested in getting acid in my eye. blink.gif blink.gif

Bought a gallon of Muriatic acid at Home Depot. $8. Mixed it 1:1. Worked really well.
Only thing I didn't like. Any area that I let air dry with the solution in the tank stained brown. sad.gif sad.gif

Next time I'll use the mixed 2 gallons to etch off the solids. Then I'll add 3 more gallons of acid. Then top off with enough water get the entire tank wet all at one time. Then drain it all at once. I'm thinking that will leave entire tank raw and ready to seal.

Hair dryer on medium drys out the tank real well. I'm going to seal with POR15 fuel tank sealer on Thursday.

The acid did open up one more small pin hole mad.gif mad.gif

Back again ................ I'm too picky. I bought another gallon of acid. Decided to soak and rinse the tank one more time. But this time I kept flipping it to keep all sides wet.

Went on a rust hunt and didn't have to go too far.

Looked in the Hell hole surface rust only but I will need to get a shop vac before attempting any work for that. Then the part I was not looking forward to the door sills always felt just a bit crunchy so I removers the cover panel and the rust was quite evident. Took some pictures so every one can say "that's not so bad" and really in the grand scheme of things it isn't. I did hit it with some of that phosphoic acid and scotch brite and it is going to dry before I put some paint on it. I will need to do some repair but I will have to learn mig welding before I start the repair. Scotty thank you for your input Click to view attachment

Chasing the cause of my irregular idle issue.
first I replaced the cht. Then I pulled the air cleaner to check the air temp sensor, this was not on tight . That made a big difference! Still had some rough running,
the part load a/f was shoing it was running really lean so I adjusted the MPS after checki g it for vac leak - held at 10 no loss of vaccuum and this seems to have really smoothed it out the rest of the way..so I took it ofr a 15 mile drive with my 10 year old daughger- ran flawlessly. Part load was 12.5-13 a/f ratio. Idle is running about 11.

Oh AND I got my dipstick thermometer today!!!!!! Installed and found my temps running at 210 , my gauge inside was indicating 185.
