I pulled my tranny out to see if I could figure out why my rear locked up on me mad.gif at 65-ish mph (great fun doing two 180's and a full 360 across the oncoming lane, only damage was about 3000 burned up Milage on those rear tires).

Got the tranny out and this is what I saw...

So I'm looking for another tranny case. And once I can get inside I'll know what else is needed. I'm glad we have Dr Evil around to help out! smile.gif

What part of CA are you in. I've got an extra case. PM me.

I'm in the Bay Area.

I also updated the saga with more pics.

Put in new fuse panel yesterday.
Installed new battery, car won't start headbang.gif

Starter works, smells like gas - usually car fires right up. Rechecked all grounds etc. Fuel pump primes when key is turned, guess I will have to trouble shoot this saturday I am giving up tonight. Btw. All electric circuits seem to check out o.k. lights etc. . hissyfit.gif

Paused work on the kombi to play with the 914. Have a Porsche club day tomorrow and have been meaning to try a new merged intake for my efi setup. Nothing like a deadline. Decided that I need 60mm more tube than I have so didn't get it finished in time but looks ok
Got most of the fleet tucked away for the night. Back at it tomorrow
One day ill work out how to rotate photos on my phone sorry

Hey Edwin,

Work have me slated to work on the next couple of weekends, but I am trying my hardest to get to The Day of the Volkswagen. Will you and your teener be there ??? If so I'll keep an eye out for it.

Cheers

Dale

Since the Westy will be in the shop for a week or so, I need to stick a battery in the 'BB'. Today seems like a good day to do it idea.gif

Replaced a pushrod tube and a did a valve adjustment.

Replaced the clutch cable with the parts I got from Mikey and 914Rubber in the group buy. It's been on my "to-do" list for some time as the PO really had something strange going on with how the cable connected to the fork, and it was really only held in by friction. It hadn't disconnected and left me stranded, however. Until last night, that is. Yup, the cable came off the fork as I was in 2nd gear accelerating onto Route 7 in Leesburg in the dark and I was like "wait, where did the clutch pedal go???" Managed to pull onto a service road and had my wife bring me out the 11mm wrench so I could get the cable back on for the drive home.

Today I put the new cable in. Wow, that was a bit of a challenge as my clutch tube welds had given way a few months back and my repairs didn't necessarily lend themselves to threading a new cable in the tube. The new cable appears to be a bit long, so I'm going to put more spacers on the end so I have enough play for more tightening. Anyone else have that problem with the cable, or am I doing something wrong? WTF.gif I think I screwed the cable in as far as it would go in up front at the connector. Anyway, it's good to know I have an anchor that fits snugly in the fork and the cable won't be coming out anytime soon.

Scratch this task off the "to-do" list piratenanner.gif

I had to install and wire up a cut-off switch to an electronic device in the 'BB' that draws power even when it's turned off dry.gif ... then I installed a new Interstate battery that I had recently purchased. Unfortunately, I discovered that the battery was just 'that much' too tall when I attempted to close the engine lid headbang.gif

Oh well ... the battery will fit my Tacoma or the Westy, so no biggie. Started the old 'BB' up and let her purr for several minutes and tested out my wiring wizardry ... all is well.

Later that evening ...

I went on line and bit the bullet - ordered an Odyssey PC-925 battery from JEGS Performance ($155. no tax & free shipping) biggrin.gif ... also ordered a set of brass SAE battery terminals for it.

Drove my teener into town this morning. A car followed me into the bank parking lot. The driver got out and said he had a 73 red just like mine. His was a 2.0 and my is a 1.7. We even bought it at the same dealership: Northlake Porsche Audi in Tucker, Georgia! He said he wished he still had it. He said he had vapor lock issues and the dealership moved the fuel pump to the front and solved the issues

Is that the original paint?

EDIT:

Since installation of the GoWesty lift springs on the Westfalia is one of those jobs you only want to do once, I decided to order all new bushing kits (F&R) for her, after all, the original rubber IS 30 years old. The front kit arrived today, hoping the rear kit will show up tomorrow confused24.gif

Several months ago I installed front trunk struts from Camp 914. Today I finished installing rear trunk lid struts. Ignore the junk in the trunk.

The instructions say to cut out a small area of the sheet metal which you can see. I also had to bend some of the sheet metal in toward the trunk to clear the top of the strut.

BTW the struts are great, the price is right, don't waste your time trying to put a kit together on your own, the instructions are clear (for us stupid taxpayers), but the pictures in the instructions...ahhh, not so much. Take a last look at the photos on the Camp 914 website before you start and things will go well.

This -6 conversion project is coming together. One of these days I hope to start it. For now I'll go back out and clean the junk out of the trunk.
