Went for a drive. Weather was absolutely gorgeous...

That's a great picture and a beautiful car!!are those 7" wheels you're running? It looks like your rear fenders look pulled a bit.

Larmo63
We installed better front brakes and calipers on Felix's race car, bled the brakes, and I had a Mexican lunch with him and Forrest in Laguna Beach complete with Pacificos. We came back, bled 'em, and I got to drive it very fast on PCH. It's only on the roller wheels, but still goes like hell.Click to view attachment

Nice pic, Ethan!!

Today I got some paint custom-blended and touched up a few small chips. No pix yet.

Took the car to FinishMaster in Vista, CA and they used a portable scanner to analyze the car's paint and formulate a mixture for me. Very pleased with it!

Web site, in case anyone else needs custom-formulated paint:

(They have multiple locations throughout the U.S.)

Guys, before you go crazy and buy anything *really* expensive, try this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tay-20308/overview/

Looks just like the original ground strap, high quality, low cost ($8.97). After 40 years the original ones are corroded and eventually they all need to be replaced. Not cleaned. REPLACED. This is the one under the trunk to the transmission. You'd be surprised how much help it does in grounding the engine/trans to the body.

I've been acquiring parts for a little bit and I just found a clean roller. So, yesterday I removed the front suspension and rear suspension, built a dolly so I could move it around a little easier and scheduled my media blaster for Friday.
I think this makes # 11 but I just sold my 911 and I needed a replacement.

I liked the exposed look of Felix's shifter in his race car so much that I did this to my car today.

My granddaughter decided demanded I needed to pick her up after I got off work today so she could ride in the 914 smile.gif

Backstory: with winter temperatures, I don't drive the 914 much since it has no heater. Last Wednesday, my wife and kids had to be at church early so I ended up driving the 914. Jaisa threw a fit when I wouldn't take her home in it. I told her as soon as the temperatures got warmer, we would go riding. Well... today hit 70F rolleyes.gif

So I picked her up. She chose "top off" mode and away we went biggrin.gif

The turn signal/wiper stalk assembly doesn't fit in the housing headbang.gif ... Apparently it's from an earlier car. Comparing it to the one I removed, the wiper portion on the replacement unit is thicker. It looks like I can swap out the thicker wiper unit for the thinner one though.

Wired-up and mounted the driver's side Blaupunkt smile.gif ...

... then moved over to do the passenger side -

I felt wet carpet sad.gif ... During the recent rain, we had a really nasty downpour for at least a good half hour, so apparently my targa-top seals aren't doing their job dry.gif

Pulled the carpets, wiped up the water, then decided to check for rust. Yep - a few spots around the perimeter. Removed some of the tar until good painted metal was exposed. Cleaned up, vacuumed and wiped down again, then hit the rust with Rustoleum Rust Reformer shades.gif

Came back an hour later and sprayed a second coat to catch what I missed the first time. I'll get the carpets back in and the other speaker in tomorrow ... then the steering column/switch housing & stalk, dash gauges and finally the steering wheel driving.gif

After that, I get to tackle the rocker panels ...

George,
Many thanks for that. Is the length of the ground strap supplied by Summit Tracing (14 inches) sufficient for a '73 2.0l? Should be able to get one in the UK. Will let you know if it makes a difference next week.

My apologies John, maybe I sent you the wrong link. The 8 inch version is plenty long enough, and closer to the stock length. That part number on the website is TAY-20308.

A common and quite correct braided ground strap is available at any FLAPS.
euro911
What a pain in the ass modifying the wiper switch stalk to fit. Had to cut, snip and file a bunch of plastic off of it, but finally got it to work out. Must have been from an earlier car confused24.gif

Also, putting those windshield washer hoses back on the valve was a chore ... now I know why the PO left them disconnected.

I couldn't install Tim's LED gauges after all dry.gif The 'BB' is a '75 and the modified gauges are early silver-dots, so the wiring is different. I reinstalled the '75 gauges, but they're now in an early metal dash panel.

Problem - I must have reconnected some wire(s) incorrectly, because now when I turn the key on, I have a constant buzzer sound coming from under the dash and the red brake light is on constantly (except for when I use the turn signals ... then the brake light flashes) headbang.gif

Oh well, I bolted the steering wheel on, all 4 speakers are connected and the stereo cranks aktion035.gif (so I don't hear the stupid buzzer). I fired it up and it passed the 'smoke test' fine, so took it for a little spin around town. Gonna have to get used to the smaller diameter wheel, but I like it smile.gif

Since the lower dash panel was still off, I disassembled the air vent units and washed everything ... reassembled it and will reinstall it as well as the carpets on Friday.

laugh.gif

I thought the scratch in the wheel was just an anomaly from the flash, but no - its a real scratch. Not sure how that happened. A little shoe polish (dye) should take care of the issue.

The horn button I have is 2", the hole in the wheel is 3". I haven't been able to find a 3" Porsche (or even a VW) horn button dry.gif ... may need to fabricate an adapter plate idea.gif

Main concern right now is eliminating the buzzer and flashing brake light in the gauge.
zambezi
you need a horn button to fit the Formuling France wheel you have. They are specific to that wheel and hard to find.

Yeah, I couldn't find one with sufficient gauge to match the stock style ground strap at the FLAPS. But, YMMV based on where you live. The one from Summit looks and fits really nice.

Thanks for posting this because I'm getting ready to reinstall the fiberglass rocker panels on the 'BB' soon. The holes in the sill are larger than normal and Mike Bellis sent me some extra-large rivets, but I think I'll go your route and get some #8 or #10 stainless screws to fasten them.

Not so good idea? The stainless is higher up in the food chain so it will make the metal around the holes rust instead...use zinc coated plain steel screws or plastic rivets.

Painted another wheel today.
Last one took forever to cure and harden so this one i thinned just a little and I added a curing agent, japan dryer. 2 down and 3 to go.

I taped off the back holes, leveled the wheel over a basin and poured the paint in until it was up to the level of the original paint line.
I will post more pictures after its dry

Did you tape off the inside of the holes where the nuts go? Those ball seat nuts need to seat metal to metal. Other than that it looks like they'll look great. I look foward to seeing them when completed. I have a set to do as welll!
