But I wasn't done today.
Swapped out the existing tail shifter for my side shift shifter assembly to go with my Side Shift tranny coming from my old car.

I also went for a Sunday drive (sorry no pics) up to Alice's Restaurant in Woodside. No teeners there, just one other 1970's Bavarian (BMW 2002), so I moved on outta there and hit the twisties along Skyline blvd.

Nice day indeed. piratenanner.gif

Put together my center console from a few different pieces and laid it in looks. Not permanent yet, but pretty happy with it.

I did not make it to Florida for the event. But my daughter and I also went cruising on Sunday. It was a very beautiful southwest day, 75 degrees and sunny. This is the 1-10 rest stop at the top of the mesa as you are coming east bound into Las Cruces, New Mexico. In the background is a giant 40 foot Roadrunner made from recycled materials. (ie. computer parts, shoes, car parts, tires, etc.)

Well not today, but this weekend I pulled and cleaned the plugs ... again. It runs so rich that I've made this is a regular recurring maintenance item, even with only garage idle runs. AFR hovers around 11.8 when it runs. blink.gif I'm beginning to think perhaps I have something set incorrectly. lol-2.gif

That will be fixed, soon. Also tried a new O2 sensor but the computer still says its out of range. Now I likely have two good Bosch wideband O2 sensors. I'm actually thinking the engine size is wrong in the general settings that calculate the "fuel required" (this is a megasquirt) since it seems to think it's a 350 cubic inch 6-cylinder! Tried to change it but it asked for info I don't know, something to do with the injector sizes - so I need more info and don't want to mess with it too much in my ignorance.

The other thing I did was find where the oil temp sensor is and pull it out to replace it, since I feel it's the most likely culprit for why I don't have oil temp reading anywhere (either on the VDO gage or by the computer). It might even be preventing the computer from ever exiting cold start mode. I was all proud of myself for finding it on a parts diagram then locating it essentially blind (this is a 3.2 by the way) and feeling by hand. The VDO sensor is dated May of '86. I'd say it's a safe bet that it is original.

Now here's the funny part: I didn't realize that even without pressure, oil will steadily seep out of the hole when you remove the temp sensor. slap.gif

To paraphrase The Onion, the headline could read: "Oil Spill Improves Area Man's Garage Floor Viscosity" rolleyes.gif I caught it after about two quarts got all over the floor. Better than the whole 3+ gallons of it!

Hells bells, at least I learn.

I tore into my dash all weekend and got a lot of stuff done. I wanted to do the dash top with 914 Rubber vinyl, put a new powder coated gauge panel in, fix a few issues, and…. I installed the JWest foglight kit, which was actually simple. Foglight switch lights up and fogs work now. The way to do the wiring is with a good full color schematic and take tons of pictures of the backs of the gauges before you start pulling wires off.

(I broke my windshield being too aggressive cutting some of the butyl rubber out, the last two inches, fuch)

Was it asking for sizes or injector dead times? big difference.
Im not super familiar with megasquirt or the tuner suite that comes with it.

Blue '73:

Put a new antenna on, and also new door wedges. I used to have to slam the passenger door shut. Now it closes perfectly!

Silver '74:

Tore into the dash to try and fix the trip meter reset cable. Made some progress on it, but it's still not working right... I can now get it to work with the gauge panel pulled off, but when the panel is put back in place it caused the cable to flex, and then it won't spin.

euro911
Mike, I had the same issue when I reinstalled the gauges in the 'BB'. You need to really jam the shaft of the cable deep into the speedo, then make sure the plastic collar snaps tight into the hole.

Yeah, I'll screw around with it some more. I think I need to buy some very long needle-nose pliers to try and get the cable nib set into the speedo while the instrument gauge is in place.

I have small hands and I couldn't reach up in there from below. I think you'd have better luck from the top while the cluster is angled out. It was a little frustrating, but I finally got it.

Installed rear suspension of the 71 after replacement of suspension console. Not 100% finish but I have to move the car before I get a 2nd notice from city complain because someone from the neighbor did complain why there is a non working car along my driveway.

So there you go inside the garage and still need to sort more junk inside our garage to be able to park my 75 also.

Sounds like my neighbors. We get a complaint from the city a couple times a year. The last one was beside they said my 2 914's and my '70 Westy Tin Top were not registered. The city came out and I showed them all the paperwork was in order, up to date, fee's paid and they were all insured. They are parked behind a 7' gate and barely visible from the street! I wonder what the next complaint those hippies will have!

Thanks for your comment on the teeners!
Several houses in my neighbor has 1 to 3 cars like junk or dirty parked at their driveway and almost along the walkway and dirty/dusty. But someone noticed mine although it is usually clean and it was only there for less than 6 months. It is on a jack stand but all the way inside my driveway and about 1 1/2 car away from walkway. Well maybe they only noticed mine because it is a 914 and they want to see it running.

It's asking for injector flow, actually. Funny, it accepted the entry for the change from 350 cu in to 3200 CC (I know that's not exact, but it hasn't been "burned" to the computer's actual memory) and now has an entry of 0.0 for fuel flow. I guess it will allow that even though I didn't save it that way but again not "burned" to computer's memory. The tuner studio suite uses the term "burn", by the way.

I've got lots more reading up to do. There are good help files to read. Gotta make time for that. There is value (in ms) for injector dead time, but that's calculated apparently from the required fuel window apparently, which is where it asked for engine displacement, number of cylinders, injector flow, and AFR.

Interesting stuff, just trying to figure out more about how the program works and controls the engine! sunglasses.gif

I see you have "the tool" for this project.

How long did it take you?

That is my next project and wanna get it done before the WCR.

It was a nightmare!!! Took me almost 10 hours, but only because things wouldn't come apart. If things go smooth then it would be an easy thing to tackle, but everything was against me that day. Hope your car plays nice when you do it.

Edit: The toe plates George let me borrow were a life saver. Still have a little tweeking to do, but drives straight, even better than before.

Broke the special stepped screw on the front targa latch, anyone got a spare?
Gues the resistance from the new seals was a bit too much for it.

The clutch pedal started to squeak so I figured it was time to re-bush with a bronze kit. This is a '76 and I have done this twice before on a '70 and a '72. Both of those pedal clusters had really worn out plastic bushings and needed it badly.

Anyway, so I got after it. Pulled the carpet, the acc pedal, the pedal board, the pan/MC cover or whatever its called, loosened the MC nuts, then the pedal cluster nuts,...Its hard to see the cable connections and you always forget how they are connected if you haven't done this in a couple of years but,... head under the dash, flashlight, a bit of the Braille system and I got the cables loose and the cluster out. Next time I think I'll remove the steering wheel first and this is onetime when you realize the early E brake lever was pure genius. My gut is still sore!

But here it is on the bench. A real pro would have another assembly already prepared and just swap it out but, noooo.....

Well the plastic bushings didn't look bad after all and could have easily lasted another couple of decades maybe? But anyway something was squeaking and its all apart now so press on to the finish....
eyesright
So, after clean up and fresh paint and assembly with new bushings,....ooops, then take it apart again to put the brake lever in the right position,...there much better, thenooops, take it apart again to put the clutch pedal in the right orientation so that I don't have to cut a large hole in the floor for the clutch pedal...Then back under the steering wheel, then under the front pan, then under the steering wheel again with the E brake lever in my gut, ...au krappe... then out to get more tools that I forgot then back in/under....

And, ...well,... it looks pretty good after its all over and doesn't squeak any more.

I changed the second hardest gasket on the car. Turbo to Manifold gasket. The old one was aluminum the new one is copper. Use copper gaskets turbo guys. Just make sure you anneal it first so it will soften slightly.n I could hear a slight leak and boost was down 1-2 psi. This one is .042 thick. Make sure you get a copper gasket about this thickness is possible. Some are paper thin. Over time the aluminum unit melted slightly, enough to get real soft and blew out. It made for a great gasket while it lasted. Also stay away from the laminated type. These tend to blow out under boost. It'a PITA due to all the stuff that has to come off to get to the 4 nuts I needed to access.

The hardest gasket (on this car) it the exhaust manifold to head due to access. I installed the manifold with the motor out of the car with "special" wrenches I had to make. I then peened the nuts to the studs. The motor will have to come out to change this one. Lucky for me it's OK. In the pic you can see a few easy nuts to get to.

I got the car rewired and installed new starter. Didn't really need the rewire but I wanted to simplify the system a little.

Need to bleed the clutch tomorrow and take it for a shake down run... driving.gif
