A long list of small parts I need to get the engine in good shape again; mostly items I can easily replace now with the engine out + parts I need to get the engine to run perfectly again.
A shortened list:
- pushrod tubes + O rings - all sorts of gaskets - new set high tension cables + dizzy parts - etc.
When added up, it will set me back a few hundred euros.

Finally got them on to see the fit pretty tight even with rolled fenders. 225/60 16, but those Wil come off and 205/55's will go on soon. I do like the 16's

So stock tires should be 24.9" in diameter and these are 26. Too tall for sure but still look good.

Phil, stock tires on a '4' were 165/80-15 which are approx. 25.39" dia.
Your 205/55-16s should be approx. 24.88", - 2% difference.
At a speedo reading of 65 mph, your true speed will be approx. 63.68 mph.
The 225/60-16s are approx. 26.39", + 4.9% difference.
At a speedo reading of 65 mph, your true speed will be approx. 68.16 mph.
I recently upgraded from Michelin 195/60-15 to Kumho 195/65-15s. They do fill the wheel wells a little better and are closer to the stock tires.
They're 24.98" and - 1.2% difference.
At a speedo reading of 65 mph, my true speed is approx. 63.94 mph.

That's very nice of you. Sadly, I live near the place where it all began: just on the west side of the German - Dutch border. As so often, parts etc are more expensive near the factory plant than in other places around the world. E.g. the prices you have to pay for a 914. In the US they are a lot cheaper than here in Europe. Finding good specimen and selling them to Europe can be lucrative!
(Another reason to move to the US. I don't want to go into this any further before this turns into a political statement...)
New bumper pad off a parts car. Pounded out some dents in my bumper with a rubber hammer and a rag. New classic style plates and tags. Picked up some frames at the FLAPS.
- but you have the next best thing. I need to build a dolly for when I refurbish the suspension systems on a few cars.

Now off of the jack stands, I played hookey from work on my birthday and went to my favorite restaurant for lunch, got a four wheel alignment then picked up my 914 blue print from the frame shop.
I have been drooling over the 914-6 blueprint. I may have to get one.....

Brings back memories from engineering classes and actually drawing diagrams on a drafting table. These CAD guys don't know how good they have it. I do appreciate not having my office cluttered with drawings now though.

Replaced my shaking transmission mount to 911 mount. Ordered it last Tuesday afternoon and arrived the following day (Wednesday morning). What a blazing fast processed by Pelican Parts.
Took me only 1.5 hr for the replacement with several rest to reply various text messages from my basketball group.
You may experience more vibration transfer with those. I tried a set, and went back to stock because of that.

Yes I did feel more body vibration now. I was thinking of fixing or improving my issue on my 2nd gear grinding, shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. Well didn't improve and now vibration appeared after installation. Good I didn't buy the wevo which is expensive and will make more harder and maybe more vibration.

How tight is your clutch cable adjusted, Noel? It's possible you need to tighten it up a little more They stretch over time.

Hah, yeah, Mark that's true, I left Encino for the east coast less than two weeks before the Northridge quake... So now it's all about Nor'easters and hurricanes
But the buzzing from those mounts drove me nuts. Plus they seemed to fit at a different angle IIRC

Hi Sir Mark! My clutch seems to be okay and I did several adjustment like halfway releasing the pedal before the engine engage or too low that is just enough to push in the shift to reverse. Forgot to mentioned, i drove the car with 2nd gear grinding during our Route 66 run.

IIRC, the difference in height between the mounts was less than 1/4". A lot of the time, one needs to elongate the flange holes a little too.
I had a bunch of good used ones on the shelf, so decided to go ahead and use 'em. The 'BB's suspension is pretty stiff so I didn't notice much of a difference in ride comfort. I'd rather experience a 'P' wave instead of an 'S' wave

This was yesterday but finished installation of the sound deadener that I had started last weekend. Used Fatmat based on my mechanic's recommendation. No asphalt smell yet Will begin reinstalling the carpet etc this weekend. Had a weird no-start issue out of nowhere that was solved by splicing the starter wires at the seatbelt interlock relay. Replaced the worn injector boots with ones from 914rubber. Replaced a leaking injector with a used one from OU8AVW (thanks, man!). And finally fixed the darn horn. Had to replace the slip ring, base plate, the rubber spring pad deal, and the spring plate assembly and swap in a new relay. Old horns were bad too so those were replaced with some aftermarket horns from the FLAPS. Sounds like a Beetle... All I need now to pass inspection is reverse lights. Gonna troubleshoot those this weekend. I already have the activating pin for the switch and I'm hoping its that because a new OEM switch is around $100.

I've ran out of gas in the Vanagon twice … the sender checks out good, guess it's the gauge that needs repaired.

Decided to address the surface rust in the battery tray. Probably should have done a more careful job but at least this should take care of things for a while.
By the way, I put a battery mat in about a three months ago and the attached pic is what I saw before removing it to clean the battery area. Is this from battery acid leaking? Surprised that this happened so quickly. Thought that mat would last for a year or two.Click to view attachmentClick to view attachment

I ordered steel lug nuts last week and I installed them ( on five lug Fuchs) today. There were quite a bit of aluminum shards and weirdness when I took the old ones off to do all new PMB brakes. Now everything is new. I feel better being able to see the threads now instead of the black aluminum caps. New nuts are yellow zinc, kind of cool.
(I read the thread about steel vs aluminum lug nuts last week and took action)

I pulled the motor and transmission out to prepare them for blueprinting.
Tried to start it up no go.. I think my fuel pump is fried. Removed rear pressure hose and whether the pump is on or not, I get the same flow to the gas can. Ordered another fuel pump. Otherwise i am getting spark to the spark plugs.
I have some of those. A little exciting backing the teener up on those. Afraid I will go too far

Today, I glued up my gear shift knob. Even though cheapie after markets are around $20, my top of knob was nice and clear, so I spent six bucks on some superglue instead. Of course, it broke again, but I had some glue left over.
And since I am a more of a functional kinda guy, rather than an esthetic person, I figured a little bit of glue is good, but a whole lotta glue is better, so I gooped it good.
If it breaks again, I'm off to the pelican for a cheapie replacement.
And now, I get to do what I bought this thing for:

This week I installed a set of Koni's and Weltmeister springs, powdercoated tin on my new 2.2 mill, added new decals to the Blue Coil, then I plucked the old engine/tranny out of the car, separated the two, dismounted the clutch assembly and bearing etc. removed the exhaust for reuse then crated the engine for shipment far far away from my tiny garage in Laguna.
Today is prep the engine bay for direct-to-metal epoxy primer and topcoat the bay then detail the engine compartment wiring and install the front half of the side shift conversion. tomorrow will be new hard gas lines front to back and sell the 25pound fire extinguisher in favor of a smaller on-board unit.....
It has been three days since the car went up on jack stands for the engine swap so I need to get busy around here or lose another week of no-fun-driving my tow vehicle in the place of my Go-vehicle............

Finally fixed the tail lights. P.O. Had swapped the neutral for reverse in the left rear housing, which kept the lights on (melting the plastic reflector) so he cut the reverse power wire at the brake pedal. Took me hours studying the wiring diagram and checking every connection to figure this out.
Thought brake lights were not working when all was done, but wife was pushing the clutch pedal instead...crisis averted and I'll cut her slack on Mother's Day.
