Adjusted the valves today. Haven't done it in a long time and it's still a pain in the ass. While it's on the lift, I discovered the front wheel bearings need adjusted, so that will have to wait till tomorrow. I discovered 0 valve lash on ALL valves today. I couldn't get even the thinnest feeler gauge to slide in. That can be done with my engine but I can't tell if it it's beyond 0 lash or not so I made them all about .004. Started it up and sounds good. The best part is no oil leaks. (So Far). Lookin' forward to the ride to Arizona soon.
Cheers, Elliot
Are you sure you don't have chrome moly push rods? They would be adjusted at zero lash.

If they're the stock aluminum rods, .004 should be is OK if the temperatures don't get too high.

I recently read a couple of good articles on push rods: Engine Builder site and ShopTalkForums

They're steel push rods and they can be set at zero but too much of a chance they'll be too tight. I used to set them at .003 but the damn feeler gauge is a little to thin and flexible laugh.gif

That's how I like my women ... thin and flexible shades.gif

Stopped into a local after-market VW store to buy a cheap repro replacement window crank, but decided to pop for a set of some fancy chrome ones with a bunch of holes in them biggrin.gif

... also picked up some heater hose (just in time for summer) screwy.gif

Received some parts from Mark (Mikey914), including a new seat adjuster handle for the driver's seat rail.

All gauges including wideband o2 working great.

Had to slightly modify the choke port plugs again dry.gif ... Adjusted float levels, reassembled and reinstalled the carbs with new top and base gaskets.

Cranked to check for oil pressure, connected coil wire and started the car. Ran at 2500 rpm for several minutes, then checked plugs. Too lean. dry.gif ...Increased main jets to 140. Ran again. Increased mains to 145 ... and it's still running lean sad.gif

Engine is a brand new 2056, snotty (RABY 9580) cam, 9:1cr, 40 IDFs with 28mm venturis, 50 idle jets, I believe F11 emulsions, and I don't remember if the ac jets are 180, or 190 (I'll have to look again) popcorn[1].gif

Looks like we're going to try 155 or 160 mains and possibly upping idle jets to 60 confused24.gif

Readjusted the driver's side headlight, installed the front valance and horn grilles with all new s/s hardware, also installed a new passenger side window squeegee and new window end caps. (Feels good to get all the little parts installed that were missing when we acquired this car) mad.gif

Still have a few remaining tasks to do, but I'm done for the day ...

Got my 75 1.8 out of storage today. It started on the first crank after 4 1/2 months in storage here in Minnesota. Took a members suggestion and used foil tape on the inside of the rear trunk light to get the most of the lighting there-worked great. Put in non-oxygenated fuel for it's first refill in months.
Tomorrow transmission fluid change.
Ordered new white vinyl seat covers from AA (my car is original Malaga Red/White interior).
Gotta love 76 degrees in Minneapolis on March 16th!
Monday goes in to find and fix an exhaust leak. Then I'll be enjoying all summer!
Oh and then there's new speakers to put in, new fuel lines, repaint the original battery tray....and have to check out how to install the intermittent wiper relay...

Today I dropped the engine / transaxle assembly from my daily driver to further investigate a front engine oil leak. At this point I can not tell if it is the oil pump, oil cooler seals or the front main seal. The push rod seals and the valve covers look good (dry). Further inspection will find the culprit I am sure....I really needed to replace the engine bay seals and clean up the engine bay area anyway so this seems like a good time to do a little of that (while I'm in there) stuff...........Jerry

Well, this was actually yesterday but...

Got headed into work with the top down and the car gets running rough, so I go to one auto parts store I haven't tried yet and they have a condensor for me, then to impart for the points. I head to the crematory which is closer than the main office and run out of gas coming down the street, I was so worried about getting the car fixed I forgot to stop for gas, but I thought I had enough, not. So, I replace the points and condensor, set the timing fill it up with gas and it's all good. I go home for lunch and my emergency brake handle gets stuck in the up position, so I disconnect the handle for the time being. I finish things up at the crematory and head to Atlanta, thinking I can finally enjoy the nice day with the top off. I get stuck in traffic because of obama coming through town, then get rained on once I get moving, atleast I had my umbrella hat!

All in all, a fun teener day!

Do you use the OEM spare tire cover (lid)? Looks like you might need to cut a small section out where you installed the pump confused24.gif

From the pix, that looks looks a pretty scary project blink.gif

How long did it take you to do the conversion? ... I'm planning on a similar conversion, but using Engman's kit.

It looks scary, but it's not hard at all if you're methodical about it. Fortunately, my front harness is all bundled up in the passenger footwell while I finish cutting and welding on the body. I imagine it would be much more tedious trying to do this under the dash. It took me about 40 minutes.

It's too cramped to label every wire while it's still attached to the old panel, so I pulled one wire at a time, labeled it... (upper 1, lower 1, upper 2... etc.) then removed the labels just before attaching each wire it to the new panel.

i finally was able to finish my early doors to late window regulator mod. painted the doors, and the top, and all new window and top rubber and fuzzies from 914rubber.com thanks mark. and not one squeek or rattle to be heard piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif. well ok, i have one tiny rattle. the knob of the window crank does jiggle a bit. but that will be an easy fix. on a side note, on my way to the auto paint supply, i stopped by the county dump for a quick weigh in. i finally broke the one ton mark. it the olympic blue flame weighed in at a meager 1980 lbs. 1/4 tank of fuel and me out of that car. and that was before the early door swap. next im out that way, i'll weigh it again.

Decided to change my steering wheel today, then while it was off thought it would be a perfect time to take my gauges out, fix my odometer, clean the dead spiders and cobwebs out of the face, and paint the trim piece.....so I did. Followed the intsructions on pelican got the odometer fixed...and cleaned out. Now just waiting for some paint to dry to put it all back together piratenanner.gif
Also made brakets and finally got speakers mounted in the stock grills, 4 speakers now sounds awesome. aktion035.gif What Rattles...

Took my 5 year old Grandson for a ride with the top off and Booster Seat in place
He couldn't stop talking and smiling the whole ride. Crossed some R/R Tracks and the horn came on and I had to pull on the Horn rim to get it to stop. Got home and reattached the wire in the Horn ring but I think I might need a new rubber cup to fix it permenently. OR... get a smaller removable steering wheel with horn button in the middle. It would make it easier for me to get in and out of the car.
I'm 6'2 and 62 (mentally much younger).

Got the new head unit wired up and mounted in the dash. I removed my carpet and when doing so, I noticed a smell of mildew from the drivers side. Removed the sound pad and tar from the floors. Now very clean and painted. Just need to find a glove box, (Think i have a lead on a door) install the new carpet, install the new speakers and pods which are for some reason taking forever to get here.

I had tried this with tan carpets from my 76 and it didn't work but I thought I would try again with black carpets from the 73. The factory carpets fit like a glove so I thought why not. A few hours to remove the carpet, blast with hose to cleanse, rinse with hot water then soak in 3 gal of hot water, 1 cup of vinegar and one pack of Black Rit dye for 30 minutes. Less than $5. The flash really makes the carpet look lighter than it came out.
