I've been trying to get some 914 time for two weeks but my back is too jacked up to play... sad.gif
I hear ya loud & clear. I had to visit the chiropractor this passed Thursday, couldn't take the pain any longer.

Had a muscle massage, a session on 'the rack', a spinal adjustment, acupuncture session and two shots in the back. Going back again Monday & Thursday this coming week to do it all over again dry.gif

Get well, Mike shades.gif

Replaced the seatbelts and retractors. I have been cleaning and lubricating the old ones several times but still no good. The new seatbelt came off my old VW Polo. Took a little time to exchange the guide and hook (I'm not sure how the parts on the first photo are called) but they fit perfectly after cutting a dowel (used to orient the retractor vertically) and reversing teh plastic guide on top of the retractor.

The belts have now VW on a label but that's not the only part of the 914 that is showing that. Anyway, since I had to part with my Polo, a very economical way to get new seatbelts in the car.

The covers over the clockspring and locking mechnsiam have a different shape but the overall dimensions are axactly the same.Click to view attachment Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentClick to view attachment

Yeah, we got some big turkeys running around this area. They stand about 4' or sometimes more, tall. They have got some girth on them too. I know because I walked out into my backyard and walked right into one. Not sure who was more surprised. He was just walking around my yard. Looked right at me and just kept walking. I opened my gate and let him out and off he went to join his friends in the front yard.

Washed it. Waxed it. Pulled off rear valance and painted it. Took old ash tray and cut a sliver off the front rubber to mount on a cup holder that I picked up in the classifieds. I am so happy with the cup holder as it works great even with a 40 oz cup.

That one was a run of two intended as beta prototypes, The water jetting is fairly expensive, so I didn't want to roll into full production until I got feedback from the users.

I actually have two of the "Stock" styles that I have yet to get into the hands of testers. PM me if interested.

I've had my Beta for a few weeks, and I like it! Fits very snug and flush when closed. I like the brushed steel look, but might end up painting it black. I can see why some might like the black rubber face plate look, as it would be a totally stock look. Had to secure the mounting bracket since it was loose with the old ash tray, but once that was done, this slid right in as if a factory option.

Now, if the rest of the community wants to improve on this, have at it. I'm thinking I could use a iPhone attachment for phone calls, maybe an iPad attachment for GPS apps. Prolly strong enough for a laptop attachment for movies and work email during those long Silicon Valley commutes, etc. maybe a dinner tray for my DoubleDouble Animal Style from Inn-N-Out. Other ideas?

i just wanted to start a thread to see what you guys do day to day on your cars.

i'll start,

about a month ago, i pulled my engine and trans to put in a new clutch. had the flywheel lightened and resurfaced. but what i didnt know is that i had to shim the little ball that the clutch arm rides on, after a resurfacing. so guess what i did today?

yup, pulled the trans and put an extra washer under the ball. you have to goop up both washers to get it to seal because the threaded hole goes all the way thru to the inside of the trans. i also replaced the plastic cup that the ball rides in. the throwout bearing and its little plastic blocks were fine so i buttoned every thing back up. 5 hours total. i think this has been the cheapest repair yet on my car. $2.75 for the little plastic cup.

what did you do to your 914 today?

74 2.0 found issues with the fuel system (D-JET)
so today installed a new fuel pump
chased the fuel line made sure fuel was coming out of the pump and
returning back
did find the error in the haynes book where is shows the plus and
minus is backwards in the illustration.
checked the fuel pump relay - works good
check the relay that starts the car - was gunked up so cleaned that off
took out each plus and cleaned them off.
and it starts NOW!

maybe tomorrow will figure out how to fix some cracks in the leather
wash and clean leather first (seats, dash)
vacuum out the car and wash and wax it.

stay tuned

Feeling better, but still taking it easy. I ordered a bunch of parts from AZ Autohaus for the 66 912, and found a box with some j-pipe/HEs that I can utilize on the 912 motor I've been working on smile.gif Just had to scrape off the old gaskets, sand the flanges flat and give 'em a shot of 2000° paint. They're almost ready to install on the motor ... I need to have a couple 3" sleeves welded onto the ends of the tail pipes first, but that's going to be easy enough.

Also ordered a starter motor bushing puller tool (VW228B) so I can fix the [non] starting issue on the Vanagon - without having to drop the drive train and separate the motor from the transaxle. Nice to know that that this puller works for starter bushings on ALL air-cooled VWs and Porsche aktion035.gif

It's not final yet and i haven't connected the hoses.
The bracket i got is a bit bulky which makes it hard to find a spot with enough clearance all around...

I had to soak the adjustment nuts in PBlaster 4-5 times before i could brake em loose. And be sure both sides are adjusted equally, or as close as you can get.

I also took a bunch of pictures for the 914 Build Challenge....I wish I hadn't sad.gif

I knew the car needed some sheet metal work in the engine compartment, but it is worse than I thought it was, to be honest I never really looked at it until now...it is fixable, but it is going to require more time and parts than I previously thought.

Oh well, it'll get done.

Took the coppertop on a short drive, blew a fuse, again, have not figured out why #7 blows when the dash lights are on.
Came home and tried to sort thru a wiring mess on the new black 75 project my daughter nicknamed "midnight"
I've got a ways to go!
Trying to get the harness pulled back thru and line it up and figure out which one goes to the fuel pump so that I can try and see if the car will crank, start. What color is the fuel pump wire?

I left it for a couple weeks , just seemed overwelming, but lined it up and then used the other car , also a 75, to figure out what goes where. That helped. They cut the wires that go to the passenger side side market and flasher so I'll need to put new connectors on those. I know which ones are for fresh air fan, and headlight motors. I'll get them all figured out , labeled and see if she will start once the necessary circuits are hooked up. But I have to clean the tank, put in new lines etc, that I've done before. Trying to decide what to do and not do.- not sure I have it in me to do a restoration, might just sort this out, get it running and put it back together enough to sell to someone that can do the rest .
