Gives me some time to work on the rest of the car.

Went for a quick drive after my SS fuel lines/new fuel pump/kinked hoses under the fuel tank odyssey. It's nice to be off the blocks and back on the road.

As I needed to remove the center console for the fuel line change and I prefer the look/feel of sans console, I'm enjoying my new found leg room.

After slaving under hot 914's all day. I washed the car. Took the top off and drove the piss out of it on the twisties between Forest Grove and Newberg on the way home.

So that was yours at Hershey this weekend, right? Beautiful car! I didn't get a chance to ask you about it. Now I see in your signature that was K-Jet on there...

That was me Rob, thanks for the compliment. I was hanging out near 914Dave and Epstein's area. Sorry missed ya.

I drove my car last in Aug '15 right before my daughter went off to school. When I parked it the right rear brake was dragging and the shifter was sloppy. I pulled the parking brake cable, it was difficult to move the cable. So I soaked it in Marvel Mystery Oil. Works 4.0. I went through the shift linkage, but couldn't find anything.

Brake is fixed but still need to work on the shifter. I'll replace the cup below the stick tomorrow. But, gorgeous weather up here in the Pac Nor'west. First drive of the season.

The right side looks the same took a pick to the whole side, everything is rock solid until I got to other that area of the long below the infamous hell hole. I picked the crap out of this area and popped the hole you see in the Long, and was able to start a small hole just below the jack point. welder.gif

I guess the news couldn't be all good!
It will give me a reason to get the wire feed out.
Still thinking its very solid for a 42 year old vehicle with the original factory paint.

DRPHIL914
what I did YESTERDAY was decide to chase the cutting in and out I was getting - I knew my FI grounds were a bit loose and have tried to tighten them, but one kept coming off , so I took the 3 prong spade connector off and cleaned it up sanding off old oil grease and stuff, then soldered the connectors and put back on took for a drive. all good-for about 5 miles then similar issue - so after getting back to the garage I began to search - I could see my A/F meter change when I pulled on the harness, and isolated it to the wires going to the #1 injector and that was where I had to stop-
so I either have a bad injector contact , plug or wire- but moving that wire would straighten it out smooth idle, ------- hate to say this but it seemed like it was coming about 3 inches back from the connector, my harness was new a couple years ago from Jeff B. I hope I don't have to pull it to have it set back to be fixed dry.gif

Getting ready to drop the 4 cylinder engine and then make the decision whether to build my /6 (expensive) or just rebuild this one for now. Tough decision to make and a big difference in $$$. (The 4 x 4 under the motor will not be there when I pull it.)

Last Friday my (new for me) 914 caught fire in the engine bay, during my first drive.
Today I have started preparing for engine removal.

It is my first time doing this, so I'm really scared to screw it up. The insulation is burned of most of the wiring, so it is hard to figure out what goes where.

Btw. is any-one on this threat able to tell me if I have a side-shift or tail-shift setup? It needs a protective booth.

Thank you for the reply. This side-shifter assembly is a good thing, right...?

How are you able to assist with the wiring?
I feel that the entire car needs to be re-wired, because there are a lot of things that stay powered on (like radio and power antenna). Then there are Home-depot style switches for other functions (like blower and interior lights). Electrical tape everywhere and most items are not run through relays (or fuses), including fuel-pump. It is also an electrical short-circuit that started the fire.

Understand you are in Hurst TX (4+hr drive from my home).

Come to Austin and meet with us on mother's day weekend. Betty and I will be there for the PCA club race at COTA.

AS for your car, I would suggest finding a used harness from a donor car and replacing the whole thing. It will shorten the time you have to spend on rewiring.

FYI... we have been there, done that on the fire thing. Betty's burned and we fixed it back up with new wiring years ago.

Take your time dropping the engine. If it takes 10 hours, it takes ten hours. I will suggest chris foley's /tangerine racing jack adapter. About $100. An amazing tool that makes it easy for one person to handle an engine and trans.
Buy a good used main wire harness $75-100. Take pics of all the issues so you/we can diagnose the problems and you can buy other needed items. Have a couple guys over to help you out. Buy beer and burgers.
The guys on this site are like no where else. They are the best and will help you get your car running again.

I'm finally in a position where I could take a Saturday an attend the Rally America, Oregon Trail Rally. So at 7am I head to Goldendale, Washington. I make a quick stop at the Parc Ferme in The Dalles at 9am. Here's a shot of our local Hoosier race tire service owner Garth Ankeny's new car.

I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of folks at Spectator Area #1. My motorsports career started in SCCA Pro Rally in the late seventies. Nothing to exciting, service member and car builder. But back then it was just us participants.

I arrived at Area #2 a little too late. Lesson learned for next year. The walk in was about a mile downhill. All my phone pictures were pretty crappy.

At the end of the day I covered 354 miles in my 73 appearance group DD. For some reason the fuse to radio blew after crossing the Sandy River at Troutdale. Come find out I had the radio tied to the 7.5 amp #2 fuse. Oh yeah, this was a solo trip so all I had for entertainment was the hum of my self built 2056. What a beautiful thing.

Averaged 70-80 mph
Oil pressure 60 psi
195 degrees
36.7 mpg cheer.gif cheer.gif

Before WCR projects:
Reset rear braking venting
Bleed brakes and or adjust brake push rod
Tires rebalanced, bad spot 63-67 mph
Move shift rod back just a smidgen, need a little deeper shift into 1st.

I dropped the 2.0 /4 motor yesterday afternoon, I think it took about an hour and a half. Split the motor trans today, and finally made up my mind to go /6 power.

I will be selling the GA motor complete with FI. Great motor, excellent compression, but a rod bearing or main bearing let go. I can make a good deal to someone who is looking for an early 2.0 /4 GA block engine. Shouldn't be too hard to fix.

I'm onto my six build, which is where I wanted to end up anyway. driving.gif

I added the 3 meter version of BlazeCut for an added measure of protection besides carrying a halon extinguisher. I added some 3/16" rubber padding to the BlazeCut anywhere it touches metal to add some protection against any vibration damage to the BlazeCut tubing and then anchored it securely using zip ties (since I didn't want to drill any holes).

Unfortunately, it's now at about 85% power under load. Wondering if it's a carb issue or something more serious. It pulled like a tractor until it all of a sudden started having problems.
