My white car is back on the road and finally registered to me. It has a new clutch, TO bearing, PPlate, clutch cable, flywheel, cleaned the transmission, header pipes reinstalled and sealed, the car still has issues, but it drives and stops well. Surprising amount of power for an unknown engine and single progressive shitbox Weber.

A set of 40s are next, but the car is coming along.

I did a bunch of small stuff to the car, every time you buy one of these things you learn something new about 914s.

After being inspired by some awesome race cars and concours cars in Monterey, I came home and installed some decals on my car. My beautiful helper, Kathy, made the process pretty quick. I better treat her right as I don't know too many wives that would do this.

I passed through PHX twice (visiting some friends in Buckeye) this past w/e ... I would have stopped by to say hi if I knew where you lived.

Shoot me a PM ... I'll be going through PHX again (back to CA) at the end of this month ...

I drove it! piratenanner.gif It's the first time I've driven the car since it went up on jackstands last December (did a bunch of long-deferred maintenance and repairs).

I really want to thank JoeD for the relay board -- it was the last thing I needed to get the car running properly again. aktion035.gif

I decided to powder-coat my beat up fuchs that had like 4 layers of paint in various colors.

I like the dark wheels look myself.

Wheels look good! Are those 15x7's in the rear? What size tires?

Great looking car either way, but I liked the original wheel pic more.

Have been doing a few things to my car, replaced a warped trunk board and recovered the front bulkhead with new liner, the board was upgraded to a 3/8 from 1/4 plywood, also made the tool for the trunk rollers and replaced them, easy peasy.

Nice job, looks great!

Yea, 15x7 with 195/50/15. This car is lowered almost as low as it can go, so that is why the 50 profile tire.

Did a mountain run this morning and the new rubber keeps the sport bikes far beind me smile.gif

I'm getting the car to an electrical guru next week to be fixed.

So, I decided to tackle the sail panels for something to do. I bought Mark's excellent door end caps (later style) and window scrapers, and vertical window/targa seals so I could do all of this in one shot. The targa vinyl is also from him.

This isn't as hard as I thought it might be, maybe on a concours car it would be a bit more nerve wracking. I just went for it.

Well we are officially off the road. Starting to take the 2056 out and readying to begin
the process of six installation. But we had a work stoppage. Looking toward front of car
the Elkhound has laid down on the job.

I used contact cement, but I know that you can buy landau top cement too, on this car, I didn't care.

Packed up the campsite and headed out of town from car week in Monterey. Stopped at Retro Auto on the way out and Kathy got star struck by Leno. Car ran like a champ for the weekend. I was a little nervous as the battery took a dump the morning we were leaving home for track. Don't tell Kathy that her Bumblebee is now missing it's battery. happy11.gif

With some help from my friend Jim(who is shopping 914's for his own right now) we installed a fan on my new aux oil cooler, seems to be working great- took it for a drive. Had Jim drive it - host first time behind the wheel of a 914, and I do believe he is hooked!- so 90+ degrees 45 minute drive and with fan kicking in at about 200, temps stayed under 210-!which never happened with out the cooler and fan.

Gave her a shower. For a small car, it took me much longer to wash and dry than my Honda Pilot and my wife's is300 combined! Prep before the wash and clean up after the wash is a hassle. I am glad my car only gets wash once a year! Not quite concours but it feels so fresh and so clean.

Working on renewing a mouse trashed blower motor and saw that the flapper door seals were as toasted as the motor, producing little to no sealing after 42 years.
IPB Image

I thought it would be an easy layup for 914 rubber to come up with a solution. So I measured them up and was preparing to off a note to Mikey, when the layout sort of set off a light bulb, that plus wanting it done sooner rather than later.
IPB Image

I was thinking I could hit the local FLAPS and dig for a donut gasket of some sort then I recalled water pipe insulation I had used in my cellar. For 98 cents I hit up HD on came home with this.
IPB Image

A little trimming later I had this first trial fit...If your worried about slippage you could always use some adhesive.

IPB Image

The clamshell flaps have one side where the outer edge is tilted inward to really grasp the material. There is also a recess in the tin that is hard to see in the pics but it really helps set the foam in. Just really a matter of getting the thickness you want and how far to let it sit beyond the flapper edge. In my case the space between the flapper door and the case is not as great as you might think, so I had to pull the foam in a fair bit. HD also offers a rubberized insulating pipe for about $5 that I will use for the destroyed foam gasket between the blower motor housing and the outer air mixing box. We'll see how long it holds up...

The car has had a no-start-when-hot issue I've been fighting for years--so far I've replaced the ignition switch (x3 from different vendors), the starter (Tilton), the battery (Optima red-top), the harness from the battery to the starter, ground strap above the transmission, cleaned all of the other connections, installed a Ford starter relay, etc., etc.

For now, I've decided to modify the starter circuit. Fortunately, there's no cutting/drilling required--the new push-to-start switch is a nice fit in the hole where the lighter used to be. I used the lighter's +12v supply wire to the new switch, then ran a new wire from the switch to the starter relay along the original harness (bypassing the relay plate in the engine compartment in case that is part of the problem). I also added a wire from the original lighter supply wire to a new receptacle under the dash where I can plug in a 3xUSB for phone, ipod, etc.

If it works as planned, I'll go back in and put in a SPDT relay with diode/resistor to avoid any current spikes. If it doesn't, I can change it back to the original configuration with no damage done--so I've got that going for me.

There are a couple of other things I'm fixing (while I'm in there dry.gif ), and I still need to get under the car to hook up the new wire. I hope to do the proverbial "press to test" tomorrow (maybe) . . . .

Started on my street car's roll bar/cage. I want it to be tucked in as close as possible in all areas so I figured I'd give a go at roll bending the main hoop to match the contour of the targa bar. Roll a bit, test fit, roll a bit more. Looks good to me...!

I ran across some errant parts whilst trying to reorganize the CA garage, and it made me think about getting back to the hydraulic clutch conversion on the 'BB' idea.gif

I'm selling a set of ATS wheels (one of them is on the L/R and the other in in the front trunk of the 'BB'), so I'll be physically touching parts of the car this coming week - maybe I'll get enthusiastically involved "while I'm in there" cool_shades.gif

I finally cleaned-up the damage from a side-swipe incident on the track some time ago, which thankfully turned out to mostly be tire rubber and trashed decals. It looks way better! I'll rattle can touch-up the fender arch as I don't want to get the whole side re-sprayed now.

Then I drove it around a bit...

Do the Car-Bone guys make the drivers-side jamb-decal (black, with the VIN number)? The DAPO trashed the original!

Reinstalled my front Valance that needed quite a few fiberglass patches. Turned out just okay but good enough for now. I used a bed liner product to give it a little texture. Looked okay so used it on a spare top. Didn't prep it good enough but it will be fine for Red Rocks this week
