Picked up car from mechanic after its yearly checkup. Adjusted valves and new vc gaskets; checked timing, dwell angle, ignition and FI components; changed oil, cleaned strainer (added new seals) and replaced push rod tube O-rings (Viton). Runs great! driving.gif
Also ordered some clear side markers from 914rubber and a Dansk OEM-style muffler. I'll be giving away the old Bursch if anyone cares.

Installed the Rennshifter.

So with the Tangerine firewall bearing, bronze shift console bushing, Dr. Evil rebuilt trans, and now this Rennshifter it should shift pretty good.

And the rear window. I know you can't see it but there is a window there.

Been doing a lot of work lately, I probably should update my build thread.

Getting real close to being able to start it.

I was toying with the idea of tossing a spare rebuilt 912 (616) motor in this one ... but I can get a freshly rebuilt 1776 dual port T1 long block for around $1600. (maybe even less from EMW)? confused24.gif ... and transfer most of the parts I need over from the stock T1 motor.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/det....php?id=2023686

Probably around the same HP & torque, and I wouldn't need to fab a bunch of stuff to make it work either idea.gif

Ordered these Glass-Action fiberglass speaker pods for the Ghia - don't want to cut holes in the door panels. These install in the front kick-panel area and will accept up to a 6.5" speaker smile.gif

Glass-Action is located in Prescott, AZ and they make a lot of fiberglass stuff for various VWs.

Boy, that should keep the oil temp in line!!!! Or is that a radiator for a water pumper??
arne
Got the new stainless fuel lines installed in the tunnel. Would have been easier with a second person, but not too bad as it was.

Also installed the new fuel pump, relocated to the rear firewall. Found that a PO had a different take on vapor lock prevention - he/she pulled the cap of of the right side heat flapper and ducted the outlet to the center of the car, using really tacky foil hose and lots of zip ties.

After adding today's work to the work over the past week (all the fuel rail hoses and new injector seals), all that's left in my fuel delivery fefurbishment is to reinstall and connect the fuel tank. Once that is done, I will attempt to start it up.

Pushed it out of the garage to work on my air conditioner's air handler. Definitely can tell the brakes are sticking and I need to get around to fixing it. Started it up just to hear it rev. The sky was cloudy and sun was going down so it made for some really good pix.

Also in the midst of a carpet replacement, but more importantly was swapping out the shifter that pretty much was against my right leg whenever driving, with the exception of 5th gear...

Well, it was two days ago, but...

Drove it to Hershey for the swap meet and back. 2+ hours each way, and in the rain to boot! Car did really well, even at highway speeds. Although, I did discover that the car isn't completely weather-proof -- had a few small leaks into the interior. So, after I got back, I pulled everything easily removable from the car, left the doors and hoods open, set up a fan and let the dehumidifier in the garage do its thing. Car doesn't seem any worse for wear.

May even really push my luck and sign up for Okteenerfest this year.

Good to meet you on Saturday, Bill. I think all of us probably needed to "dry out" after the trip back -- not sure how many of us, if any, are watertight.

Well, also yesterday, not today. (Updated my build thread, but not here. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?s=&...t&p=2478655 )

Ran for the first time for at least 6 years, more likely close to 8 years. Wasn't too tough, today is 4 weeks since I got it home.

I started it. Ran it at 2k +\_ for 20 minutes to work harden the cams and check for leaks. Mocal opened up and showed me one on the top nut on the front cooler. I have initial carb tuning and sorting yet to do short term.

914 content:

The high winds blew the cover off ot the 'BB' - so I rolled it up and it's safely tucked away for now.

My friend Carlos came by this am and looked at the '71 914 again ... still only wants $1,500 to repair a few minor dents and repaint it L80E Ivory ... I just need to remove some more trim pieces so he can start working on it smile.gif ... (the unusually wet winter put a serious damper on all the automotive work here) dry.gif

Other stuff:

Also, Carlos is going to take the Vanagon to his place next week ... remove the front windshield, the rear hatch window and left center side window, fix some serious rust spots, remove a dent in the rear hatch, repaint those areas and reinstall the windows with new rubber seals - all for $650. ... then I can ask the really BIG BUCKS for it! mueba.gif

Sourced a interior mirror mount/courtesy light assembly, the proper screws and installed it in the Ghia. Cleaned out the glove box and found receipts for a brake job, and new sparkie plugs & wires that the PO had performed just prior to my purchase, totaling $350.

Ran some conduit & wiring and installed a 6-station sprinkler controller for the new sprinkler system we installed last year - so the CA grass will stay nice and green when I'm in AZ pat.gif

What this all means, is that I can now devote some quality time to the 'BB's clutch release project this w/e.

Took the '73 out for a test run after doing Mark's Ford solenoid hot start "fix". Started right up, and after up to temp it started right up again... though I must admit I did it at a friend's house where he is on the side of "mountain."

DRPHIL914
Replaced the steering shaft bearing - not too bad really, And a nice snug fit on new bearing - hope the new one lasts another 42 years- also hope I can drive it or at least ride in it at that point - hm, 90+ years young - anyone still out there in their 90's still tooling around in their 914? If so beer.gif to ya!

I found a box of tin parts for the '71 that I had previously blasted a year or so ago, and they were starting to rust again. Took 'em to shop class on Tuesday and re-blasted them.

Been washing, drying and priming said parts since.

Started up my 1974 1.8 and watched gas pour out of the passenger injector...
My 1971 1.7 did this a few weeks ago and I guess it's not uncommon for the first run of the season. The 1971 stopped leaking on the next day. It's getting "new" injectors. I'll see what the 1974 does tomorrow.

I have another 1974 1.8. It's impossible to have THREE leaking in one year, right?

Injector seals are quite inexpensive wink.gif

Today, I started consolidating & condensing all the parts I've collected for the 71's restoration, separating body parts from drive train parts, etc. Also doing this for all the 912 parts I've acquired - a daunting task
