took the engine out. for the first time doing it, it went smoothly.

it was missing. turns out there is only 75% compression in cylinder #1 and leaking into carb. Inlet valve, valve guide?

it's coming apart on Tuesday with the guidance of a great air-cooled mechanic, Jay Kjoller who thankfully lives close by.Click to view attachment

Got slightly creative because I had a rotted center console and didn't want to run the hoses under the car. This is just mocked up now but things are fitting well and getting something, anything done is a good thing. I should have a roller before the snow falls and just in time to roll in the donor for the winter.Click to view attachment

Made a set ( and a few extras) of these laser cut Stainless Steel housing covers, aka Lager-Deckel #914 331 213 00, which attach and hold down the axle- bearing on the trailing arm. Stock is an 11gauge c/r metal stamping. My design is 3/16" thick which will give better bearing protection for HD track work with the big v8 hp on board. Click to view attachment

Took it up to Mort's for the bbq. Was a small turnout, that's fall for ya...

Got to drive over the Hudson on the new TappanZee bridge. Pretty cool. There was a rainbow but it doesn't really show in the pic

The wife hadn't driven her car in 6 months so I thought I would take it out to keep it from entirely drying out and causing leaks etc.

First problem was the battery was dead. I mistakenly unplugged the extention cord attached to battery tender a while back. I charged the battery.

Once charged I was going to still take it out on a drive etc. As I was backing out of drive way, my wife asks what was dripping under car. Pulled back in an discovered cracked fuel injector. Luckily I have spares in parts bin. Changed injector and went for a drive up hwy 9 to skyline. Car ran great.

Wife has been scolded for not driving car regularly.

Finished building my big 'kick as'' trailer so finally got back to the 914.
Fitted drivers side rocker panel cover with rivets @ the top,so good not having a leak down the rear from the tank suction piratenanner.gif .
Started stripping down my Bosch 911E 2.4 "003" dizzy ready for machining down the body to suit my crankcase,it need turning down to 27mm which is standard early 911/T4 and type 1 size.
I don't have the use of a lathe so have a mate that will do it for me...very clever machinist biggrin.gif .
Lots of small jobs to do and a few majors but most steeps are forward and I really enjoy working on it beer.gif .

Are you looking @ a top overhaul @ this stage ?

Fixed a broken oil temp sender wire and got it ready to take to Flagstaff for a week on Tuesday. Used 1/2 quart of oil in 2,700 miles since the last oil change...not bad.

Not my car but helped a friend start his car and break-in the cam. First time it's ran since he bought it 5 years ago. I'll get some pictures next time I see it but he had it painted Bahama yellow and it looks great. Still lots of reassembly and sorting to do but hopefully he will have it ready for Rt 66 -2018.

Now I know where to find the keys. Let's discuss it in a couple of weeks if you can get the Ghia out to the Beer, Brats & Beetles event up in Santa Clarita!

I took the factory ski racks off of the car, yesterday my son said "they don't go with the GT thing."

Cruised the car up towards Newport with the top off and the windows down, wow, I need to do that more often. The traffic came to a sudden stop in Laguna Beach, bumper to bumper as far as the eye could see, so I gave up and turned around to head south.

Even the Ghia has issues. The driver's side inner seat track has been back-ordered with every VW vendor for about a year. In calling around, I found out the manufacturer is KGPR and was informed that they lost some of the machinery pieces for the pressing them when they relocated to their new facility. The owner said he'd try to locate an inner track for me this coming week, but couldn't guarantee anything dry.gif

That is fantastic! I smoked a Subaru STI a while back. The guy was so embarrassed that he wouldn't pass me until I slowed down 15 mph under the speed limit. I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the fading sound of his blow off valve with every shift of the 914. driving.gif

Took the '73 for a quick errand to the local Walgreens. Parked off in the corner and some chick in a SUV flagged me down all excited and said she wanted to buy my car...

now why does that not happen to me!??
i'm 50, i wouldnt mind a 49 something chase me down because she liked the 914! my wife wants nothing to do with my smelly exhaust old car with no ac- - oh well . cant win them all!

Philip, I have the same problem with my wife. She thinks the 914 is a tin can. That's why you get a 993 with AC; comfortable car to take Wifey around in.

Your setup with the Webbers looks like mine.....I was told I need to install a pressure regulator after the fuel pump to limit the pressure to the carbs. I have a new regulator that came with the car.

Do you or anyone else know what the max. pressure should be for these carbs? in psi?

TIA,

GN

true- i now have a boxster lol! actually the second one- i tried getting her a Cayenne but she didnt like it. she does like driving stick so i figured if i could get her to try the Panomara she might change her mind. its not aircooled, but neither is my Boxster- she went from the Jaguar to a Lexus 400h, but misses the performance of the Jag ! i actually think she would like the Macan Turbo, kind of combines the best of both however i cant afford one at this point yet. For now a ride in the boxster will have to do.
DRPHIL914
so in the spirit of the thread and back on track-
i began the process of getting 914 ready for the body/ paint- going to pull motor out this weekend and strip it down so they can easily sand off old respray and finish the body work over next 2 months- then its getting a beautiful new coat of L99k- copper metallic- l have a lot to do ovwr the next few weeks!

I run a regulator at 3 psi on both my cars running Webers...
euro911
I run a Carter 3.5psi pump with the 'BB (carb'd), no regulator needed ... but I used to run the 30psi pump and ran the carbs in series, then used the return line from the second carb back to the fuel tank - didn't use a regulator then either.
Gatornapper
My pump is a Carter as well - are all Carter's 3.5psi? PO told me the regulator needed to be installed. Since the Porsche dealer put the Webber's on, I would have thought that if a regulator was needed, they would have installed it.....

Thanks!
