In reply to euro911 and Arne - I suppose turning the pistons 180 deg so the little end thrust is correct for the reverse direction would make sense. I did not build this engine so don't know if that was done or not.

Cheers

As long as I was cleaning Mike's (Warpig) gearbox and the jet washer was fired up, I started washing Mark's (Mikey914) gearbox too. It will need a little screwdriver work before it gets another wash.

So I jacked her up and popped off the right valve cover. Hmmm.

It started at WCR, but wasn't enough for me to locate. It's interesting that my misalignment took 4000 miles to start leaking.

I also got Mark and Matt the dimensions for the frunk channel repair sections. I'm asking that they get created in 36 inch pieces.

To get a nice and tidy repair you'll need to purchase or borrow a set of these.

Made this supersize 914-RS emblem tonight (30mm), I hope the requester still wants it, I'm only a month or so late making it. (not paid yet so he might have gone someplace else for one, that is what i get for being so slow)

I still need to deburr and polish it....

Anyway, shown with stock sized emblems for scale. (20mm)

Fixed my alternator. I thought the shaft bearings were toast. Turns out the mounting bolt was way loose. I had to fabricate a new bolt added a few washers and it tightened right up. It's nice and solid now and doesn't rattle around any more. I'm happy I didn't have to replace it. laugh.gif

I got start up on Carerror today.

Some day I'll be working on my car. biggrin.gif
I'm taking a break from welding and we'll start a side shifter conversion on Mike's new to him 72.
First order of business, prep the side shifter going in. Come to find out the speedo drive is leaking like a sieve. So a little rebuild is in order. The wiper seal on the lower section is behind the washer/spacer.

Back in business. Mike had the seals in his on site parts stash. biggrin.gif
Don't pry against the inside threads. Very soft and fine aluminum. Get a longer pick.

Mike pulled the new side shifter linkage from his 75. Then pulled the tail shifter linkage from his new 72.

Engine is out. But we've decided we'll be doing while we're in their projects.

Had to do some rearranging to make room to work on Mike' car.

Stopped by Valco Oscar's and we headed up to Mike Schantz's 914 auction this morning. A lot of really nice parts were had for pretty good prices. The real cool score of the day for me was what appeared to be a NOS passenger-side SS 2.0L H/E (for $125.) that's needed for the '71's upgrade mueba.gif... been searching for one of these for over a year.

Oscar acquired a a bunch of nice parts too, and a really cool looking '74 tub with a consistent rust patina - it's gonna make a nice rat-rod aktion035.gif ... I think Jeffery (914-7T3) got some pix of it confused24.gif

Removed the centres from the rear caliper pistons, they're off to the machinist tomorrow.

Fitted the new goodridge front Flexi pipes and started to run brake fluid through the front pipes.

Painted the top dash pad with texture paint, came up better than I expected

Can't sit in the engine bay of any new vehicles these days. I remember sitting in the engine bay of my '59 Ford PU truck, with room for someone else on the other side (and that was with a 360 V8 and headers in there).

Yesterday I sorted and moved more [912 & 914] parts into the storage shed. Then later in the evening on my way home from a shopping errand, the Vanagon ('Eileen') died on me mad.gif

Starter wont turn her motor over, but it isn't the battery, and the starter is only a year old. I suspect something much worse. Had AAA tow her to a friend's VW shop in Manhattan Beach, so I'll be heading down there in a couple of hours to discuss the problem popcorn[1].gif

Update:

Preliminary evaluation at Automeister this morning - motor only rotates 180°, so it looks like maybe she sucked a valve confused24.gif ... won't know until the valve covers are pulled. They're pretty backed up, so we won't know much more until they can get her on the lift ... in about 3-weeks.

She has a minor coolant and oil leak from the passenger side head too, so that will be taken care of no matter what else needs to be done. IF she needs extensive work, she'll be going to 2.1L aktion035.gif

That was considered and yes it would. Putting AC in the car so need room for condenser and dryer still so decided vertical. Fabrication of mounting system/servicing all influenced my decision.

Thanks. The radiator rests into two rubber grommets that support the weight of the radiator from below and provide vibration dampening. Similar to an OEM set up on newer cars. In addition there are the four bolts you noted above (also with grommets) holding it in its upright position to the frame. Pretty stout setup. I will be adding a AC condenser to the frame similarly but no bottom anchor next and finish shrouding.

I finished refurbing my calipers including painting them. I also received the cable bracket from mcmark so that's been painted and now ready to fit.

The windscreen wiper mechanism was stripped cleaned and regreased before being reassembled and refitted. Works great now.

Finally I stripped and cleaned one driveshaft ready to be fitted, getting oh so close to driving it for the first time biggrin.gif
