So many months back I made a trade for some custom wheels. Well, they are all done and I have them piratenanner.gif

I painted the centers and weighed them. They came in at 13.5lbs. What does a 5 lug Fuchs weigh?
scott_in_nh
Sweet!
More details and closer pictures please!

drooley.gif drooley.gif drooley.gif drooley.gif WOW! That is going to look so nice. What kinda tiers you have in mind?
smontanaro
I Googled for Porsche wheel weights and came up with this chart.
PeeGreen 914
So this is 1.5lbs heavier than a 5-lug Fuchs smile.gif Tires that will be mounted are 225 45 RA1s

Jon

Where those polished and who did the polish? I've been sanding on mine

and that is alot of work. santa_smiley.gif
PeeGreen 914
They are Mahle centers but polished aluminium hoops
NORD

I see that

I've got a set that I'm just trying to do the rim then I'll paint

just the centers like Panasports silver wheel paint. santa_smiley.gif

Yours do look great! next time we meet you'll have to tell

me how much you have in them without the wife finding out.

I don't have anything into them as it was part of a trade wink.gif

However, what I traded for them was a rather rare part. blink.gif

Those are gorgeous!
smontanaro
I'm sure I'm being dense here, but I thought these were one-piece wheels. How do you get centers from one and different hoops? Is it just sawzall-smiley.gif then welder.gif?
PeeGreen 914
I'm not sure how it is done but basically just remove the center and use it in an aluminium hoop. All of which is beyond my abilities.

It's actually pretty easy. If you want to do the part of the rim where the stem is you will have to dismount the tire. Otherwise, just jack up one rear wheel (chock the front ones for safety) then start the engine and put it in 2nd gear. While the tire is spinning place the "wet sandpaper" over the area you desire to polish, working from 1200 grit thru 2000 grit. Follow up with polishing compound and then a finish compound. You will need a rubber backed sanding pad to hold the sandpaper in place or you will toast your finger tips as all this friction will = heat.

Paint the rims first then follow above instructions. Takes about 10 min's per rim.

I polished and sanded the empi style wheels on my sons bug using a airtool with a scotchbrite roll and disks and then 400-1000 and 2k paper then polish with the mothers stuff. Afterwards I painted the centers. Of course with the tires off. I'm sure the wheel mounted on the car running in gear will work though but be sure and put a jack under the arm to support it up, not in the full down position.

the Gurney / American Racing wheels are 5.5 wide not 7

Hmmm. I never would have thought of using the car itself as a lathe.

I would not try this at home.

A motorcycle forum I hang out on has stories of how people used a similar method to clean their motorcycle chain, which usually ends up with fingers getting cut off. Apples and oranges, I know, but running a vehicle in gear with no one at the throttle looks like an accident waiting to happen IMO.

I think a wager is in order. But just to be fair I did weigh one. Your call. Cost of tire removal and rebalance is on the loser.

These are 15x 7s?
aircooledtechguy
drooley.gif Those are absolutely incredible!!!!!!!

I know it was a trade, but were they done here in the Puget Sound area?? I would really like to have the wheels on my '67 Square (currently running stock 5.5" Mahles like those) widened with custom offset and possibly made into 16" versions at the same time. Gotta know who to talk with though if they are local.

Otherwise Stockton Wheel is the only other option i know of. . .

Lemme know. . .
PeeGreen 914
Done locally. smile.gif

They look really good with 225 45 r15s too smile.gif

So it looks like I will need to pull the fenders very little to fit 225 45 r15s with these wheels biggrin.gif

I'm compensating for something blink.gif

Those look great. I wonder why the builder didn't do the offset a little better when they joined the centers to the hoops. I assume they were always intended for a 914. That may not be the case I guess.

Jon, is this car going to be ready for this upcoming autox season?

The builder built them knowing I was going to pull the fenders.

Yes and no. It will be at the autocrosses but as it stands I need a 1.8l engine able to do GP. Unless something changes it may need to wait until next season to make a run at Nationals.

I have to agree with you PeeGreen. Those Dan Gurney "Westerns" do not weigh 10 pounds. How do I know? I weighed mine at 15.8 lbs.

wub.gif Beautiful. If I went with a narrow body I'd run these for sure. The black centers set off the BUB's nicely too.

For the class I am building the car for 7s are the max and they had to retain the 4 lug pattern.

BUBs are gone.... Need to get the car down to 1800lbs smile.gif
